Run your encoder inside a detached tmux or screen session on your Google Compute Engine Linux VM, then detach before closing SSH. The encoder can keep running after the SSH connection ends, and you can reconnect later to inspect it. This protects against a disconnected terminal—not a VM reboot, stop, crash, network failure, encoder failure, or YouTube restriction.
Keep the encoder running when you close SSH
SSH is the connection you use to control the VM; a terminal multiplexer keeps a terminal session available independently of that connection. Google Cloud recommends using tmux or screen for terminal sessions expected to remain open for an extended time (Google Cloud SSH-in-browser guidance).
- Connect to the VM using your usual SSH method. Confirm the VM is running and that the encoder command works in a normal shell before relying on it for a live event.
- Start a multiplexer session. For example, run
tmux new -s youtube-liveiftmuxis installed. Alternatively, start ascreensession withscreen -S youtube-liveifscreenis installed. - Start the encoder inside that session. Run your existing encoder command there and check its output for errors. Keep the session attached while you verify that YouTube receives the stream.
- Detach without stopping the encoder. In
tmux, pressCtrl-b, thend. Inscreen, pressCtrl-a, thend. You should return to the shell while the multiplexer session remains available. - Close SSH. You can end the SSH connection after detaching. Do not type
exitin the encoder’s own session or send a termination signal to the encoder. - Reconnect and inspect. Run
tmux attach -t youtube-liveorscreen -r youtube-liveto return to the session and view the encoder output. If the session is not listed, the encoder or VM may have stopped; investigate rather than assuming the stream is still live.
Commands can vary with the installed Linux distribution and software. If a multiplexer command is unavailable, install or use one supported by the VM image before starting the stream. A detached session makes it easier to resume the same terminal; it is not a process supervisor.
Know what this protects against—and what it does not
A detached tmux or screen session is suited to an interactive, one-off run where you want to return to the terminal. It does not automatically relaunch the encoder after a VM reboot. Nor does it protect against a stopped or crashed VM, loss of network connectivity, an encoder error, or YouTube ending or restricting a stream.

For reboot startup, Compute Engine Linux startup scripts can run at startup as root. Google documents that they require the guest environment and run only when a network is available (Google Cloud: Use startup scripts on Linux VMs). A startup script is a boot-time mechanism; it is not the same as a detached interactive terminal.
A Linux service manager such as systemd may be appropriate when you need a managed process, but service configuration depends on the VM’s Linux distribution and the way the encoder is installed. Validate the unit, restart behavior, logging, permissions, and secret handling for that environment before relying on it. Google describes the guest agent that supports VM features, but that documentation is not a ready-made encoder service recipe (Google Cloud: About the guest agent).

Connect the encoder to YouTube safely
- Get the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room as part of the live-stream setup (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming). Enter them in the encoder using its supported configuration method.
- Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions). Do not expose your stream key in a public command log, shared script, or other location accessible to people who should not control the stream; treat it as a credential.
- Match the encoder settings to the intended output. YouTube’s guidance covers protocol, codecs, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio, and constant bitrate (CBR), with settings depending on the target quality. Its page recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and gives four seconds as the maximum. Check the current guidance for your chosen resolution and frame rate instead of assuming one configuration suits every stream.
- Measure upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate (YouTube Help: Streaming tips). Account for the combined video and audio bitrate and use the VM’s available outbound capacity; a process running in the terminal does not establish that the incoming stream is healthy.
- Test and monitor. Before the event, start a test stream, check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream health, and confirm that audio and video arrive as expected. Keep an eye on both YouTube’s health indicators and the encoder output during the event. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering, so choose latency settings with the viewing experience in mind.
Check YouTube’s stream-duration and content rules
Keeping an encoder active on a VM does not guarantee an unlimited YouTube live event. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder). Plan around YouTube’s current live-stream behavior and check the event in Live Control Room rather than treating VM process status as proof that YouTube is still broadcasting.
Use material you have the rights to stream and follow YouTube’s applicable live-stream and channel policies. A long-running or repeated stream is not exempt from copyright or platform rules; a technically healthy ingest does not establish that the content is permitted.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops or is not visible
- SSH closed and the stream stopped: Check whether you detached before closing SSH and whether the multiplexer session still exists. If the encoder was started directly in the SSH shell, its behavior after disconnect can depend on how it was launched; use a multiplexer for the next run.
- You cannot reattach: Confirm you reconnected to the same VM and used the session name you created. Check whether
tmuxorscreenreports an existing session; if none exists, the VM may have rebooted or the session may have ended. - The encoder is running but YouTube shows no healthy stream: Inspect the encoder’s output, ingest URL, selected protocol, stream key, and Live Control Room preview. Confirm that outbound bandwidth can sustain the total bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- The stream becomes unstable: Review the encoder’s bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio configuration against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Reduce the output demand or address network capacity if the VM cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
- The stream does not return after a reboot: A detached multiplexer session is not reboot recovery. Check the VM’s startup configuration or managed service and confirm the guest environment, network availability, permissions, and logs. Test recovery deliberately before depending on it.
- YouTube ends or restricts the event: Check Live Control Room and the channel’s notices. A continuously running process cannot override YouTube’s duration behavior, content policies, or service-side interruptions.
