You can change the playlist’s saved sequence by dragging its videos; dragging in the watch-page playlist panel changes only the temporary playback order.
First, check whether playback is still in the playlist
Open the playlist and start a video from it. If the next item is not the expected playlist video, notice what plays instead: another item from the list, a repeated item, or a related video. YouTube’s Autoplay feature plays a related video after one ends, which is different from advancing through the playlist.
Check the Autoplay control on the watch screen. YouTube also documents Autoplay settings in the mobile app and on TV. Settings may differ by device, so check the device where the problem occurs rather than assuming a setting on another screen applies.
On a phone or tablet, YouTube notes that the next video may not start automatically if you scroll past the player or type a comment or search. If that describes the symptom, keep the player in view and test playback again.

Check and change the playlist’s saved order
Open the playlist and compare the displayed sequence with the order you expect. If the saved list itself is wrong, change it there. On desktop, YouTube’s instructions say to click and hold near a video or Short thumbnail, then drag the item up or down.
Reordering is unavailable for playlists containing only Shorts. If the playlist interface does not match YouTube’s instructions, its Help page recommends updating to the current version of YouTube.

Saved order and temporary playback order are different
Changing an item’s position in the playlist edits its saved arrangement. YouTube also documents a temporary reorder: on the watch page’s playlist panel, drag a video up or down. Use this option to adjust the current playback sequence without treating it as a change to the playlist’s stored order.
Shuffle is another possible explanation for playback that differs from the designated sequence. Google’s YouTube IFrame Player API documentation describes shuffle as playing videos in an order different from the playlist creator’s designated order. That describes the API-controlled embedded-player context; it does not establish that a particular viewer’s app or browser has shuffle enabled, or that its controls behave identically.

If you own the playlist, edit it in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Choose Playlists.
- Open the playlist’s options and choose Edit.
- Change the playlist settings, including its video order, then select Save.
YouTube cautions that some features may be unavailable to supervised accounts.
If the order still appears wrong
Pin down the pattern before trying unrelated fixes. Note the device and app or browser, whether playback starts from the playlist page or an individual video, whether one playlist or several are affected, and whether videos are skipped, repeated, or replaced by related videos. Those details help distinguish an ordering issue from Autoplay or a playback-context change.

Community posts include reports of playlists or queues skipping items or appearing to shuffle, including a thread dated October 21, 2025 and another begun May 22, 2026 with follow-up comments in June. These are user reports, not confirmation of a platform-wide defect or an official fix. The latter thread was unavailable when opened directly, so it should not be treated as authoritative guidance.
The documented controls above do not establish that clearing a cache, reinstalling the app, or rolling back an update will fix every out-of-order playlist. If the issue persists after checking the playlist, playback context, and Autoplay, report the device, app or browser, and exact symptom through YouTube’s support or feedback options.
