Capture the time and messages before changing settings; a disconnect can come from the encoder, internet path, stream details, provider, or security software, and the symptom alone does not identify the cause.
First, identify what actually failed
During or just after a dropout, record the time and whether it is local time or UTC. Note the vMix Stream button state, whether the program output still looks and sounds right locally, and what YouTube Live Control Room reports for stream health. A healthy local output does not prove that YouTube is receiving the feed, and viewer buffering does not by itself prove that vMix disconnected.
- vMix stopped or reports an error: inspect vMix’s status and session log.
- vMix changes from red to amber/orange: check network congestion and sustained upload capacity.
- YouTube reports an ingestion error: use the timestamp and error details to check format, bitrate, audio/video streams, keyframes, or connection details.
- vMix and YouTube look healthy but viewers buffer: investigate playback and delivery separately from encoder ingest; do not assume the encoder is the failure point.
Change one variable at a time and write down the change and its time. That makes it possible to connect a later symptom to a specific adjustment rather than losing the evidence in a series of simultaneous changes.
Check vMix status and logs
Open View Status and preserve the session log
In vMix, open the Streaming settings and select View Status for technical stream information. Preserve the newest log file from C:ProgramDatavMixstreaming; vMix saves session logs in that folder. Compare the log entries with the time you recorded and the YouTube health messages. If the log is unclear, vMix advises sending it to its support team.

Interpret common vMix messages carefully
av_interleaved_write_frame(): Unknown errororInput/output errorindicates that the stream has disconnected. vMix lists possible explanations including a local internet outage, a streaming-provider outage or closure, and third-party antivirus or security software. Check whether other internet services failed at the same time, ask the provider about an outage, and review relevant software or network rules; these messages alone do not prove which cause applies.- If the status turns amber/orange after it was red, vMix says network congestion is the usual explanation. In this particular status pattern, inadequate computer or graphics-card performance is less likely. Compare the outgoing bitrate with sustainable upload capacity and check for other traffic or a local-network bottleneck at the recorded time.
- An error immediately on connection can point to an incorrect destination URL or stream key. vMix notes that a provider can also reject invalid credentials or an expired stream. Verify the current values in YouTube Live Control Room rather than reusing an old key or URL.
- A “real-time buffer too full” message at startup can simply mean the provider or CDN is taking longer to connect. If it appears after the stream was already red and the status becomes amber/orange, investigate congestion instead.

Use YouTube’s timestamped stream-health errors
YouTube Live Control Room attaches timestamps to detected stream errors. Match the warning at the time of the dropout; an unrelated warning is not automatically the root cause. YouTube distinguishes critical red messages, which may prevent a stream from starting or cause viewer problems, from moderate yellow messages, which can degrade quality.

- URL, protocol, or key: confirm that the destination and stream key match the current Live Control Room values. If a key may be stale or rejected, retrieve the current key there and update the encoder.
- Video and audio format: check codec support and that the feed has the expected audio/video streams and channel configuration. YouTube flags unsupported codecs, missing or multiple streams, and channel-count problems.
- Bitrate: check the recommendation for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, then compare it with the upload your connection can sustain. YouTube advises lowering resolution when available bandwidth cannot support the selected setting.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends keyframes every 2 seconds and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Frame rate and keyframe interval are linked in its error guidance.
- RTMPS connection errors: confirm that the encoder uses the supplied server URL beginning with
rtmps. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to check encoder support and notes port 443 as a possible configuration when required by the URL.
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and live streaming error messages pages for the selected mode. For H.264, YouTube’s guidance surfaced in 2026 recommends 5 Mbps at 1080p30, 6 Mbps at 1080p60, 3 Mbps at 720p30, and 8 Mbps at 720p60. These are platform configuration recommendations, not proof that a particular uplink can sustain them reliably.
Test the outbound connection and encoder load
Run an upload speed test, but do not treat a single peak result as evidence of stable capacity for a 24/7 feed. YouTube’s troubleshooting flow recommends investigating outbound internet when encoder output appears healthy but the stream fails; if a connection test reveals a problem, contact the internet service provider. Assess sustained upload stability, packet loss or jitter under load, route/provider reliability, and concurrent traffic during a representative stream.

If the encoder output itself looks or sounds poor, inspect source routing, encoder errors, and CPU load. Testing another encoder can be a comparative diagnostic, not proof that the original encoder was faulty. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.

Choose a profile the connection can sustain
Match resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to YouTube’s current recommendations and the connection’s measured sustained capacity. Do not copy a bitrate from a different resolution or frame-rate mode. A lower profile that remains stable is preferable to a higher profile the uplink cannot maintain.

Use vMix’s network buffer for variable speed, not outages
vMix’s Network Buffer setting controls the maximum time it can keep network data buffered. Its guidance is to increase the buffer when the maximum available network speed is unreliable. Test any added delay in the actual production. A larger buffer may increase the latency contribution from vMix; it cannot repair a full outage, rejected key, provider failure, or saturated/failed connection.
Keep the streaming application choice evidence-based
vMix’s current help recommends the FFMPEG application; FMLE is described as legacy. Confirm provider compatibility before changing application, codec, or protocol settings, since support can vary by destination. See the vMix Settings guide and vMix Streaming Quality guide.

Rehearse for a 24/7 operation
A short successful test cannot establish that a setup will remain connected for a full day. Rehearse at the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, content motion, audio routing, and expected network load. Watch vMix status and logs alongside YouTube’s health panel for an extended representative period, and verify how an operator or alert path will detect a failure.
For a long-duration operation, plan monitoring for ingestion, viewer playback, encoder status, network connectivity, and local disk space if recording or archiving. Rehearse recovery and verify any claimed failover with the exact configuration. The official vMix and YouTube guidance explains setup and diagnostics but does not establish guaranteed automatic reconnection after every disconnection or uninterrupted 24-hour operation. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check its current encoder setup guidance for the applicable stream workflow. Its live encoder guidance also recommends continuous monitoring of stream health.
