If a YouTube video has sound in your browser but not in VLC, check VLC’s mute and volume controls, confirm an audio track is selected, and verify that sound is routed to the intended output device. First, identify where the sound problem occurs

Fix VLC’s basic audio settings
- Check mute and volume. Make sure VLC is not muted and raise its playback volume. Also check the operating system’s volume control and any physical volume control on your speakers or headphones.
- Select an audio track. Confirm that the video has an audio track and that VLC has selected it. If the stream offers more than one track, try another available track. Menu names and locations can vary by VLC version and operating system; the reviewed documentation does not establish one current path that applies to every build.
- Check the output device. In your operating system’s sound settings, select the speakers, headphones, or other device you intend to use. If VLC offers a separate output-device choice, check that it points to the same device.
- Test sound again. Replay the YouTube stream and a local file. If local media now has sound but the YouTube stream remains silent, continue to the YouTube-specific checks below.
If VLC has no sound from any media
When VLC is silent for both local files and YouTube streams but other applications play sound, VLC’s output module may be involved. VideoLAN advises trying a different audio output module, saving the change, and restarting VLC. If only YouTube streams are silent or will not play
If local media has sound in VLC while a YouTube stream is silent or fails to load, the YouTube stream handler may no longer match changes to YouTube’s delivery protocols.
