OBS Studio is free to download and use, including for commercial purposes. It has no required license fee, watermark, or usage limit. But “free OBS” does not mean a 24/7 stream has no costs: your computer, electricity, internet connection, content rights, and any optional cloud service are separate.
What OBS costs—and what it does not
The OBS Project describes OBS as open-source software under GPLv2 and says it is free for any purpose, with no watermark or usage limitations. Donations are optional support for the project, not a required license payment. The OBS Project also warns that requests to pay for OBS are scams. See the OBS help page for its licensing explanation.
OBS is an encoder that runs on your computer, not a service that hosts your stream. Its connection goes from your system to YouTube; OBS does not provide servers in the streaming path. So the software itself is free, while keeping a machine and network connection operating continuously may not be.
Potential costs around a 24/7 setup
- A computer capable of encoding the chosen resolution and frame rate, with enough cooling and stability for sustained operation.
- Electricity and an internet plan with reliable upload capacity.
- Maintenance, replacement parts, or backup equipment if you need to recover from a local hardware failure.
- An optional cloud streaming service, if you prefer not to run the encoder locally.
- Permission or licenses for the music, footage, and other material you stream. Free software does not grant rights to content.
These costs vary with hardware, workload, electricity rates, internet plan, and location; no general total can be calculated from OBS’s zero software price.

What you need for a continuous YouTube stream
OBS can encode a YouTube stream, but a computer that meets minimum compatibility requirements may still be too weak for your particular workload. Encoding demands depend on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS’s requirements page, dated August 25, 2021, lists Windows 10/11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 or later with Intel or Apple Silicon and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland. Treat those OS details as a dated compatibility reference and verify current requirements before buying equipment.
Your connection must also sustain the stream’s upload bitrate. YouTube’s current guidance recommends the following H.264 bitrates; these are recommendations, not a promise that a particular ISP connection can maintain them around the clock:

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube publishes different bitrate guidance for AV1 and H.265, so do not apply the H.264 figures to those codecs. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS delivery, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Its guidance recommends CBR encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds), and recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to its servers. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for codec-specific values and current setup details.
How to connect OBS to YouTube
- Enable live streaming on your YouTube account. You may need to activate the feature first. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not wait until the intended broadcast time to check.
- Create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup flow to obtain the server URL and stream key.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, then connect your account or choose the stream-key option and enter the details YouTube provides. Keep the stream key private: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Set output to match the stream you intend to run. Choose a supported codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval. Check YouTube’s recommendations for that codec and output; ensure your measured upload capacity can sustain the bitrate with room for normal network variation.
- Test before going live. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test with audio and motion similar to the real program. Check the encoder output and YouTube’s stream health, then correct dropped frames, audio issues, or bitrate warnings before relying on a continuous broadcast.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. OBS must remain open and the computer, power, and internet connection must remain available for a local stream. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover starting and managing the broadcast.
YouTube says monetization is available if the creator is in the YouTube Partner Program. Its archive rule is limited: streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a guarantee that an indefinitely running stream will be archived or remain uninterrupted.

Copyright, reused material, and channel consequences
OBS’s license answers whether you may use the software; it does not clear the material in your broadcast. Before looping a documentary, soundtrack, or other recording, confirm you have the necessary rights for the material and the way you plan to use it. A stream key and a technically healthy connection do not establish permission.
Continuous playback also does not guarantee monetization or eligibility for YouTube features. YouTube’s monetization statement is conditional on being in the Partner Program; assess your channel and content against YouTube’s current policies rather than assuming that an always-on stream qualifies.

Ways to keep a YouTube stream running
Choose based on whether your source is genuinely live or a prerecorded program, and on who must keep the encoder and connection operating. A local OBS setup gives you control over scenes and live inputs, but depends on your own equipment and upload connection. YouTube’s verified encoder directory also lists cloud services Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams and Upstream for 24/7 live-video streaming; their current pricing, terms, and uptime guarantees are not established here.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is #1 for keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running from the cloud: it loops uploaded videos without requiring your computer to stay on, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

Quick Recap
Common problems and what to check
- You cannot go live yet: Check whether live streaming is enabled for the YouTube account. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Test upload bitrate, compare it with the recommendation for your codec and output, and lower the output if your connection cannot sustain it. Test under realistic audio and motion conditions.
- Dropped frames or an unstable local stream: Check both the computer’s encoding load and the upload connection. Meeting OBS’s basic system requirements does not guarantee capacity for your chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder, or scene.
- YouTube is not receiving the encoder: Recheck the server URL and stream key in OBS against the current YouTube stream setup. If you replace or reset the key in YouTube, update OBS as well; do not share the key.
- The stream stops when you leave: A local OBS stream depends on the computer and its network remaining available. Check sleep settings, power, cooling, and internet stability; if you need the stream to continue without a home computer, consider a cloud service designed for that workflow.
- You expect a long stream to appear in archives: YouTube’s automatic archive statement covers streams under 12 hours, not indefinite broadcasts. Plan recording and preservation separately if you need a dependable copy.
