Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive to preserve a 24/7 stream. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a stream you produce, record a local copy in OBS, use a retention limit, and move completed files off the active disk or delete them when they age out. Timed segments make files easier to manage, but keeping every segment does not save storage.
Why YouTube’s automatic archive is not enough for a 24/7 stream
YouTube’s Archive live streams guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is a platform limit, not a promise that every shorter stream will be preserved. A continuous 24/7 broadcast passes the stated threshold, so treat the automatic archive as a convenience when available—not as your complete backup.
YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. That advice is especially relevant if you need to retain the actual program you broadcast rather than rely on what remains available on the channel.
Choose what you are archiving
Your own channel’s outgoing program
If you produce the lofi stream in OBS, record the outgoing program locally. This gives you a copy of your own production and lets you choose where recordings are written. The local copy consumes storage until you move it or remove it, so decide how long it needs to remain on the active disk before you start.

Someone else’s YouTube stream
The guidance here does not establish an official, supported viewer-side method for continuously capturing another creator’s stream or settle whether a particular recording is permitted. Check the creator’s rights and applicable terms before making a copy; do not assume that OBS instructions for recording your own output are a supported way to archive somebody else’s broadcast.
Set up an OBS recording that can survive interruption
- Choose a recording location. In OBS, open Settings > Output and set the recording path to a disk with enough free space for your retention window. OBS documents the recording path and recording output options in its Standard Recording Output Guide.
- Use MKV as the recording format. OBS recommends MKV because an ungracefully stopped recording will not corrupt the entire file. This matters for a long-running program that could be interrupted by a shutdown, crash, or power loss.
- Keep the recording settings aligned with the program you need to preserve. The disk requirement depends on the actual recording bitrate and duration. Do not choose a drive size based on a generic estimate for “lofi”; measure or estimate from your OBS settings and your planned retention period.
- Stop the recording cleanly when practical, then remux only if needed. If a playback or editing workflow requires MP4, OBS can remux a finished MKV recording to MP4. Use OBS’s remux option after the recording has finished rather than making a less resilient format choice solely for compatibility.
- Check the result before deleting the source. Confirm the recording opens and plays, and confirm any remuxed file is usable in the software you need. Do not remove the original until the copy has been verified and your archive policy says it can go.
OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide explains that ordinary MP4/MOV files need finalization and may not be recoverable if writing is interrupted. It also describes fragmented MP4/MOV as an alternative with chunk-level resilience, subject to codec and editing compatibility. For a straightforward resilient OBS workflow, MKV is the recommended starting point; choose another container only when its compatibility trade-offs suit your workflow.
Estimate storage from your actual recording bitrate
Storage use is governed primarily by the recording bitrate and how long you retain recordings. A practical estimate is:

Approximate file size in bytes = bitrate in bits per second Ă— recording seconds Ă· 8.
For a daily estimate, multiply the total bitrate by 86,400 seconds and divide by 8; for a retention window, multiply again by the number of days kept. The result is approximate because container overhead and variable bitrate can change the final size. Use the actual OBS recording bitrate or inspect completed files to refine the estimate. Audio and video together contribute to the recorded data.
- Choose a maximum age or number of hours/days to keep on the active disk.
- Check current free space before starting and compare it with the estimated space for that window.
- Move completed recordings to a separate archive destination, such as an external hard drive, if you need longer retention without keeping everything on the working disk.
- Delete files outside the retention window only after verifying that any copy you intend to keep is complete and readable.
No single drive capacity fits every stream: bitrate, retention duration, and whether completed files are moved elsewhere determine the requirement. An external drive is a destination category, not a substitute for setting a retention rule or checking capacity.

Use timed segments for easier handling—not smaller total archives
Segmenting a continuous recording can make uploads, indexing, review, and deletion easier. FFmpeg’s formats documentation describes the segment muxer, which can create timed files and a segment list. Segment duration may not land exactly on the requested boundary because video splits occur at keyframes.
Segments do not compress the footage. If you keep every segment, the total storage is approximately the same as keeping one continuous recording of the same material. Segmentation saves active-disk space only when paired with a policy that moves or deletes older segments.

How to keep the active disk from filling
- Set the retention window. Decide how much recent material must stay readily available—for example, a defined number of hours or days based on your review and recovery needs.
- Estimate the space requirement. Use the OBS recording bitrate and the formula above, or measure a completed recording and extrapolate from its duration.
- Choose a destination for older files. Move completed segments or recordings to separate storage if you need to keep them; otherwise delete files once they pass the retention limit.
- Automate cautiously. If using FFmpeg’s segment muxer or a cleanup routine, test it on nonessential material first. Confirm that segment names and lists are being created as expected and that cleanup targets only files outside your retention window.
- Check disk space and archive health. Periodically verify free space and open a sample from the archive destination. An archive that was never fully copied or cannot be played is not a useful backup.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping your YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it does not create a local archive of the outgoing stream. The workflow is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud continues looping the uploaded material without a computer or home connection staying on.

The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete
A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube’s automatic archive. Keep a local recording of your own outgoing program rather than treating the platform archive as the only copy.
The recording will not open after OBS stopped unexpectedly
For future recordings, use MKV, which OBS recommends because an ungraceful stop does not corrupt the entire file. Ordinary MP4/MOV files may depend on finalization and may not be recoverable if writing is interrupted. If you need MP4 compatibility, remux a finished MKV and verify the output.

Segments are longer or shorter than the requested interval
Video segment boundaries depend on keyframes, so the segment muxer may not cut at the exact requested time. Treat the duration as a target and inspect actual segment boundaries before building a workflow that depends on exact timing.
The disk is still filling despite segmentation
Segmentation creates multiple files; it does not reduce the total bytes while all files are retained. Move older recordings to another destination or delete files beyond the retention window.
A long stream is available to rewind only for part of its duration
YouTube’s DVR guidance says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and behavior can also depend on the device or app version. DVR is a viewing feature, not a dependable full archive. The Google Cloud DVR session documentation at Create a DVR session concerns a Google Cloud livestream workflow and should not be mistaken for a viewer-side way to preserve a YouTube creator’s 24/7 stream.
