Choose OBS when you need an encoder to send a live feed you control. They are different workflows: Vimeo’s automatic prerecorded playback runs through its web production tool and does not support external encoders such as OBS.
If YouTube is the destination, Vimeo can simulcast an event there, but a scheduled YouTube event may still require you to select Go Live in YouTube Live Control Room. The right choice depends on automation, destination and how much operator involvement you can provide—not on a proven quality or reliability advantage.
What is the difference between Vimeo’s prerecorded event and OBS?
| Decision point | Vimeo native prerecorded event | OBS encoder workflow |
|---|---|---|
| What sends the video | Vimeo plays a video from your Vimeo library in the event. | OBS encodes and sends a live feed to a destination using its stream URL and key. |
| Scheduled playback | Vimeo documents automatic scheduled playback in its web production tool, subject to feature eligibility and operating constraints. | OBS is an external encoder and cannot trigger Vimeo’s automatic prerecorded-event feature. |
| Operator action | A basic video-to-live event is started by the Owner. The separate scheduled autoplay feature can start playback automatically when configured and eligible. | The operator configures and starts the encoder. If Vimeo sends to a scheduled YouTube event over RTMP, YouTube may also require a manual Go Live action. |
| Best fit | You have an uploaded Vimeo video and want Vimeo’s documented scheduled playback workflow. | You need to send an encoder-driven feed, for example a composed production, and are prepared to operate it. |
These are documented workflow differences, not a head-to-head test. The official instructions do not establish a universal winner for image quality, latency, reliability, cost or audience results.
When Vimeo’s native scheduled playback is the better fit
Vimeo offers two related but distinct ways to use a prerecorded video. Its video-to-live flow creates an event from a video’s settings and preloads the video into the first scene; an Owner starts the event. Vimeo’s automatic scheduled prerecorded mode is configured separately in the web-based production tool and can begin playback at a scheduled time.

Check eligibility and limitations first
- The described native video-to-live and scheduled prerecorded features require Advanced or Premium, or Enterprise with the Events feature. Vimeo plan packaging can change, so check the current account and product eligibility before building an event.
- The automatic scheduled feature is for live events and webinars, not venues, and does not support external encoders.
- The video-to-live instructions say the flow is unavailable for Vimeo Stock purchases. Uploaded subtitles and captions are not displayed during live playback.
- For an automatic start, schedule at least one minute ahead. The selected videos play in full and automatically transition between scenes.
- Concurrent-stream limits can prevent a scheduled event from starting. When that limit is reached, Vimeo says earlier scheduled start times take priority.
- If the scheduled playback transitions into live scenes, the event returns to manual mode; an operator must end it.
See Vimeo’s scheduled prerecorded event instructions and video-to-live instructions for the current setup flow and account details.
When OBS is the better fit—and what it does not automate
OBS is relevant when you want an encoder to send a live feed to a destination. Vimeo’s OBS connection guide describes selecting a custom service, entering the event’s RTMP URL and stream key, applying the bandwidth-test configuration, and starting the stream. That is an encoder feed workflow; it is not the Vimeo web-studio scheduled prerecorded playback feature.

Do not infer from Vimeo’s OBS guide for Vimeo OTT that its plan requirements apply to every Vimeo.com live product. That particular guide concerns OTT, where live streaming is available only to Growth and Enterprise sellers. Confirm the requirements for the Vimeo product and destination you intend to use.
For YouTube, scheduling the event and sending the encoder feed are separate controls. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, testing upload capacity, previewing the incoming signal and monitoring the stream. Its guidance also recommends preparing the encoder well ahead of the event: set it up at least two hours beforehand, start it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time, and leave 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. These are operational recommendations, not guarantees of delivery.

How to send a Vimeo event to YouTube
Vimeo documents two destination methods: connect YouTube directly or add YouTube as an RTMP destination using the URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Vimeo’s guide lists up to 10 destinations for direct integration and up to 20 simultaneous destinations for RTMP setup. Those are platform limits described in its help guidance, not promises about stream performance.
- Confirm access. Vimeo’s YouTube simulcast guide lists Advanced or Premium, or Enterprise with Events. The YouTube channel must be verified to go live. Check that the account has no live-stream restriction; YouTube says a channel with a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days cannot stream.
- Create or schedule the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, create the live event and note its stream URL and key if using RTMP. Scheduling makes the event discoverable in advance and lets viewers receive reminders; it does not by itself start the encoder or guarantee the event is live.
- Set Vimeo as a destination. Use Vimeo’s direct YouTube connection or configure an RTMP destination with the YouTube URL and key. Keep the stream key private.
- Prepare and test. Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Check the incoming preview, audio, picture and connection before the public event, then monitor the stream.
- Check YouTube’s live state at showtime. For a scheduled YouTube RTMP destination, Vimeo warns that the YouTube Live Control Room may require you to select Go Live after the feed arrives. Do not assume that Vimeo’s scheduled playback also performs that separate YouTube action.
Vimeo’s setup details are in its YouTube simulcast guide. YouTube’s current encoder preparation and eligibility guidance is in Create a live stream with an encoder and its live streaming requirements.

Which workflow should you choose?
- Choose Vimeo native scheduled playback if the source is an uploaded Vimeo video, your account has the necessary feature access, and the goal is scheduled prerecorded playback through Vimeo’s web production tool.
- Choose OBS if you need an encoder-driven live feed and can configure and operate it. Do not choose it expecting it to invoke Vimeo’s automatic prerecorded-event feature.
- For a YouTube audience, plan for both platforms’ controls. Set up the YouTube event and destination, and leave time to confirm whether YouTube’s Live Control Room requires a manual start.
Run a representative test before relying on either setup for an important event. Check the video, audio, stream preview, schedule and any required operator actions. The published platform instructions describe features and recommendations; they do not establish a universal quality or reliability winner.
Or let it run in the cloud

The first day is free with no card required; the monthly plan is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded-video playback to YouTube, not camera streaming. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
