Start the MediaLive channel to send its feed. For a scheduled YouTube stream, check the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live when it is ready.
Before you configure MediaLive
You need an active MediaLive channel with an input and an output you can edit, plus the YouTube stream’s current server URL and stream key. YouTube provides both values in Live Control Room; neither an old example URL nor a key from another streaming platform is a substitute. Treat the key as a credential: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for ingest. Use the ingest URL shown in YouTube Studio and confirm that your selected MediaLive output supports the protocol in that URL. YouTube recommends leaving resolution and frame-rate detection on automatic by default. If you need a fixed output, YouTube says to create a custom stream key and enable manual stream-resolution settings. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains its current protocol and stream setup recommendations.
Get the current YouTube server URL and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Open the Stream tab. Create a stream or select an existing stream configuration.
- Copy the server URL and stream key displayed in the current stream settings. A previous stream’s settings, including its key, can be loaded again; check that you have selected the intended stream before copying.
- Keep the key private. Do not put it in screenshots, public documents, or messages visible to people who should not control the stream.
YouTube’s instruction is to “enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” The two values are both required, but MediaLive places them in separate fields. See YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Add a YouTube RTMP output in MediaLive
- In the AWS Elemental MediaLive console, open Channels and edit the channel that has the input you want to send.
- Add an RTMP output group to the channel if it does not already have one.
- In RTMP destination A, enter the URL copied from YouTube in the destination URL field.
- Enter the YouTube stream key in Stream Name. Do not append it to the destination URL unless the current MediaLive field explicitly calls for that format; the MediaLive RTMP model treats the destination endpoint and stream name as separate values. See the MediaLive RTMP output settings API reference.
- Configure the video and audio output for the source and YouTube’s current requirements. AWS’s tutorial example uses H.264 video and AAC audio, and says output dimensions should not exceed input dimensions. Those are example choices, not a complete or universal YouTube settings preset. See the AWS MediaLive RTMP output tutorial.
- Save or update the channel after checking the output group and its destinations.
Choose output settings that suit the source
Codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and ingest protocol are related choices. Match the output to what the input can actually supply and to YouTube’s current guidance; do not assume a bitrate or resolution from an older guide applies to every channel. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default. Choose manual settings only when a fixed output is required, your source supports it, and you have configured the appropriate custom stream key and manual resolution option in YouTube.
If the stream is HDR
HDR can change the codec and protocol decision. YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR; if the encoder cannot provide the needed capabilities through RTMP, YouTube says HLS may be considered. AWS documents an HLS ingest workflow for a specific 4K HDR use case, but its URL shape, segment duration, profile, bitrate, frame rate, and other values are a worked example, not universal settings. Recheck current YouTube and MediaLive guidance before using them. See AWS’s YouTube HDR HLS ingest example.

Start MediaLive and take the YouTube stream live
- In the MediaLive console, open Channels, select the configured channel, and choose the start action.
- Wait for MediaLive to start sending the encoder feed, then check the channel status in MediaLive.
- For a scheduled YouTube event, open its Live Control Room page and wait for the encoder signal and preview to appear. Review the preview, then select Go live to make the scheduled stream public.
- For a non-scheduled encoder stream, start the encoder feed to send the stream live, following YouTube’s instructions for that stream.
- When finished, stop sending content. For a scheduled stream, also select End stream in Live Control Room.
Starting MediaLive sends the feed; it does not replace the scheduled event’s separate preview and Go live action.
Troubleshoot a missing preview or failed output
- No preview appears in YouTube: Recheck that the URL and key belong to the selected YouTube stream and are copied without errors. Confirm the URL is in the destination URL field and the key is in Stream Name.
- The URL or key may be stale: Return to the current stream settings in Live Control Room and copy the values again. If you exposed the key, replace or rotate it in YouTube Studio, then update MediaLive with the replacement.
- MediaLive is not sending: Check the channel’s status and confirm the channel and RTMP output group are running. Review the output configuration and destination fields.
- The scheduled event is not public: Check whether Live Control Room has received the encoder preview. When it has, select Go live; the preview alone is not the scheduled event’s public start.
- The output settings do not fit the source: Verify that the output dimensions, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and protocol are supported by the input and match the intended YouTube workflow. Do not set output dimensions above the input dimensions based on AWS’s tutorial guidance.
Understand the AWS cost variables
MediaLive cost depends on channel configuration; AWS notes that width, height, frame rate, and bitrate affect cost. Check current AWS pricing against the actual channel and output settings before estimating a stream’s cost. A price from an unrelated configuration is not a reliable estimate for yours. AWS provides broader context on MediaLive output options.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings or a playlist, rather than a live production pipeline configured in MediaLive, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. It supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.
