They are not direct substitutes. Wowza’s legacy documentation describes looping one hosted MP4 through a transcoder, but that loop keeps the transcoder running and accruing charges until stopped or scheduled to stop. A July 10, 2025 Wowza support response said scheduled prerecorded playlists delivered to YouTube were not then available in Wowza Video. Because that answer is dated, verify current capabilities with Wowza before choosing it for that workflow.
What each product does
OBS Studio: an encoder on your computer
In the Wowza-documented combined setup, OBS sends an RTMP source stream to Wowza Video, which receives, processes, and delivers it. The tutorial has the user start the Wowza live stream first, then start OBS. This describes a Wowza workflow; it does not mean Wowza Video is required to send a stream from OBS directly to YouTube.
Wowza Video: cloud processing and delivery
Wowza says its former Wowza Streaming Cloud service is now called Wowza Video, retaining existing functionality for current customers while adding platform features. Its legacy file-streaming documentation describes a cloud transcoder that downloads and loops a hosted MP4. These roles matter: comparing OBS alone with Wowza Video is not a like-for-like comparison.
Can Wowza loop prerecorded videos to YouTube?
One hosted MP4
Wowza’s legacy documentation says Wowza Video can use an H.264-encoded MP4 from a web server, Google Storage, or Amazon S3. After the live stream or transcoder starts, it downloads the source file. Startup and download time vary with transcoder startup, file size, file location, and network conditions. The loop control is an advanced transcoder property and is disabled by default. Wowza recommends leaving 10–15 seconds of buffer at the end of the file to reduce the risk of premature cutoff. For scheduled starts, it recommends allowing at least five minutes for startup and download; this is guidance, not a guarantee. Read Wowza’s legacy file-streaming documentation.

A playlist of separate videos
Do not assume that looping one MP4 means Wowza Video supports scheduled playlists sent to YouTube. On July 10, 2025, Wowza Senior Technical Support Engineer Jason Hilton said that scheduled or playlist streaming of prerecorded videos to platforms such as YouTube did not then exist in Wowza Video. He described combining clips into one MP4 as a limited workaround and pointed to Wowza Streaming Engine with a module for playlist support. That is a dated support response, not a verified statement of Wowza Video’s capabilities in 2026. Check the Wowza Community thread and seek a current answer from Wowza.

Wowza’s setup tutorial also warns that charges accrue for started live streams even when they are not actively carrying content, and advises stopping the stream when the event ends. Which approach fits your channel?
- Choose a local OBS workflow if you want to operate the encoder yourself and can keep the computer, software, and connection available throughout the broadcast. Confirm the exact OBS source and loop behavior you intend to use in current OBS documentation.
- Consider Wowza Video if you need its cloud processing and delivery workflow, or its documented single-hosted-MP4 loop fits your needs. Confirm that your intended destination is YouTube Live and that the current service supports the exact playlist or scheduling behavior you require. Account for ongoing transcoder charges while a loop is active.

Cost and operational checks before you start
- For Wowza, verify current pricing, billing triggers, stop controls, and any schedule limits directly with Wowza; current plan prices are not established here. Its legacy documentation specifically warns that an active loop keeps the transcoder running and accruing charges.
- For either DIY setup, confirm the YouTube destination, stream key, source-file access, and start/stop plan before scheduling a long broadcast.
- Use content you have the rights to stream. YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules apply to prerecorded material as well as live broadcasts; a continuous loop does not itself establish permission to use music, footage, or other protected material.

Common problems and what to check
The MP4 starts late or not at all in Wowza
Check that the file is H.264-encoded MP4 and reachable at its web-server or supported cloud-storage location. Allow for startup and download time; Wowza’s five-minute scheduling recommendation is not a guarantee, especially for large files or slow connections.
The loop stops or the bill keeps growing
In Wowza’s legacy workflow, loop is disabled by default. When enabled, it overrides idle timeout and leaves the transcoder running and accruing charges until manually stopped or stopped by a configured schedule. Verify the loop setting and the stop schedule before relying on unattended operation.

A playlist is not playing as separate scheduled videos
Do not treat the single-MP4 loop as playlist support. The July 10, 2025 Wowza support answer described a single combined MP4 as a workaround and cited Wowza Streaming Engine with a module for playlists. Ask Wowza to confirm current Wowza Video support for scheduled prerecorded playlists delivered to YouTube.
The OBS-to-Wowza stream does not arrive
Follow the order in Wowza’s setup tutorial: start the Wowza live stream, then start OBS and send its RTMP source. Check the source and destination configuration in the current product interfaces, and stop started Wowza streams when they are no longer needed because charges may accrue even without active content.

The stream ends before the file appears to finish
For Wowza’s documented file workflow, add the recommended 10–15 seconds of buffer to the end of the MP4 and confirm the source file completed downloading. Network conditions and startup timing can affect playback.

Does Wowza Video send a YouTube embed instead of a live stream?
The July 2025 support thread specifically asked about delivery to platforms rather than an iframe or hosted player. It does not establish that every Wowza workflow delivers to YouTube, so confirm the destination behavior for the current product before purchasing or building around it.
