Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor most technically capable creators who already have a suitable computer, OBS is the simpler place to start: it is free, flexible desktop software. AWS Elemental MediaLive is a managed cloud video-processing service for teams that need cloud processing and are prepared to configure and pay for AWS resources. Neither one, on its own, guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 YouTube broadcast.
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube around the clock, rather than produce a live programme, StreamNeo is the first alternative to consider: it runs prerecorded videos from the cloud, with any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. For a live production, compare OBS and MediaLive by total operating cost, control, resilience and who will monitor and recover the stream.
OBS vs. MediaLive: what actually differs?
| Decision point | OBS Studio | AWS Elemental MediaLive |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Free, open-source desktop recording and livestreaming software with scenes, sources, transitions, audio mixing and configuration controls. OBS Project | A managed cloud live-video processing service. YouTube lists it as a verified encoder and describes support up to 4Kp60 HEVC. YouTube’s encoder guide |
| Where it runs | On a Windows, macOS or Linux computer. You manage that computer, its power, network connection and software environment. | As channel resources in AWS. AWS charges while the channel is running, including when inputs receive no content and outputs produce none. AWS pricing |
| Cost shape | The software is free; the complete operation still uses hardware, electricity, connectivity and operator time. | On-demand charges apply hourly to running inputs, outputs and add-ons. Usage is rounded up to the nearest minute after a 10-minute minimum. Region, configuration and data transfer affect the bill. AWS pricing |
| Production workflow | Designed for direct desktop production, with scenes, filters, audio mixer, hotkeys, Studio Mode, and plugin/API support. | Configured cloud processing with defined inputs and outputs; the setup and operating expertise must suit the production. |
| Resilience | OBS itself does not supply a second encoder, backup network path or backup power source. | AWS says standard channels use two processing pipelines in different Availability Zones for increased channel resilience. This is not a guarantee for the entire broadcast chain. |
| Likely fit | A creator or small team with capable hardware that wants hands-on production control and can monitor and recover the local setup. | A production team that needs managed cloud processing and can design, operate and fund the necessary AWS resources. |
YouTube lists both OBS and MediaLive among verified encoders. In either case, its workflow requires configuring the encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. A verified-encoder listing is not a claim that YouTube owns or endorses the product.
Choose based on the job, not just the encoder
Choose OBS when desktop production matters
OBS is the more natural choice when you need to compose a programme on a computer: switch between scenes, combine sources, mix audio, use transitions or adjust the production directly. The trade-off is operational responsibility. If the computer restarts, loses power, runs out of resources or loses its internet connection, OBS cannot keep sending the stream from that machine.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose MediaLive when cloud processing is a requirement
MediaLive moves video processing into AWS, which can suit a team that wants managed cloud infrastructure rather than a production computer at the venue. It is not simply a cheaper or more reliable OBS replacement: you must configure its channel, inputs and outputs, understand the AWS billing model, and account for the rest of the delivery chain.
For continuous prerecorded playout, consider a purpose-built cloud option
If the content is a library of uploaded documentaries or other prerecorded videos, and the requirement is continuous YouTube playout rather than camera-led live production, an encoder comparison may not be the right first decision. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud to YouTube. It is not a camera-based live-production tool.
What does a 24/7 stream cost?
OBS: free software, not a free operation
OBS has no software price, but a continuously running local setup still consumes electricity and relies on a computer, network service and someone or something to monitor failures. A UPS for the computer and network equipment can bridge some brief power interruptions; it does not fix an internet outage, a long blackout or an encoder failure.

MediaLive: pay for running AWS resources
AWS bills for running inputs, outputs and add-ons. Charges continue while a channel is running even if it is not receiving or producing content. The on-demand usage duration is rounded up to the nearest minute after a 10-minute minimum, and the total varies with region, configuration and data transfer.

For scale only, AWS’s pricing page, accessed in 2026, gives a US East (N. Virginia) example of a standard channel with two HD HEVC inputs, five AVC outputs and advanced audio at $3.942 per hour. That is a specific, multi-output configuration, not an estimate for a simple one-output YouTube stream. The same page shows a 12-month reserved example at $0.78 per hour and $564.12 per 30-day month; those figures likewise describe the stated example, not a general MediaLive bill. AWS says eligible resource usage with a 12-month commitment can save up to 75% versus on-demand, subject to its terms. Check the current AWS MediaLive pricing page against your actual design before budgeting.

How to make a YouTube stream resilient
Continuous operation depends on more than the encoder. Consider the source or input, encoder or cloud channel, power, network path, YouTube ingest, alerting and the people or automation that respond to failures. MediaLive’s dual processing pipelines address part of that chain; a tested backup encoder addresses another. Neither establishes end-to-end uptime for the whole YouTube broadcast.
Prepare and monitor the broadcast
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time livestreaming enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Configure the encoder with YouTube’s ingest details. Enter the stream URL and stream key in the encoder. Keep the key private; anyone with access may be able to broadcast to the channel.
- Leave time to verify the feed. YouTube advises configuring an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. Check the preview in Live Control Room before relying on the stream.
- Allow upload-bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends capacity for the primary stream plus the backup stream, with an additional 20% headroom. Use actual configured bitrates and available upload capacity—not download speed—to plan this.
- Test failover and watch quality. YouTube advises testing by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player switches to the backup. Continuously monitor audio and video quality; a network disruption can break a stream.
These YouTube recommendations are framed around events, but they are useful checks for a continuous channel too. For a 24/7 operation, define who receives alerts and what happens if the primary source, encoder, power, connection or YouTube ingest fails.

Limits to account for before committing
Redundancy is not end-to-end uptime
A standard MediaLive channel’s two pipelines in separate Availability Zones improve resilience within the channel’s processing layer. They do not make the source, network, YouTube ingest, monitoring or recovery process invulnerable. OBS can be backed up with a second encoder, but a backup only helps if it has a viable source and independent enough power and connectivity to take over.
Do not assume a 24-hour stream becomes one complete archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guide does not establish that a single uninterrupted 24-hour event will be archived as one complete recording. If full-day VOD is important, verify the current YouTube workflow and plan how recordings will be retained.
Keep copyright and channel rules in view
Neither encoder grants rights to the material being broadcast. For documentary programming, ensure that you have the necessary rights to video, music, photographs and other included material, and comply with YouTube’s livestreaming and channel policies. A long-running loop does not remove those obligations.

Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded videos, StreamNeo keeps the YouTube stream running without a computer or home internet connection staying on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your upload streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded-video playout to YouTube, not camera-based live production. See how StreamNeo works, or start your free day.
Which should you use?
Use OBS if you want direct desktop production control, already have suitable hardware and can operate the local system. Consider MediaLive if your production needs cloud video processing and your team can design and manage the AWS resources and costs. If your actual goal is looping prerecorded material on YouTube, choose a cloud playout service such as StreamNeo rather than treating a general-purpose encoder as the whole 24/7 solution.
