To reduce bandwidth use, lower the bitrate of the video FFmpeg sends to YouTube. If that is not enough, reduce the output resolution or frame rate and test the result for acceptable quality. Check your VPS provider’s transfer meter and billing rules: the amount you owe depends on the plan’s allowance and how it counts traffic.

What controls bandwidth use?

Your VPS sends an encoded stream to YouTube’s ingest servers. Its outbound transfer is driven mainly by the stream’s video and audio bitrates, how long it runs, and how many outputs you send. Lowering the encoded output bitrate reduces the data sent over time; lowering resolution or frame rate can make a lower bitrate more workable, depending on the material.

YouTube creates multiple playback formats from the incoming live stream, so you do not need to send a separate copy from the VPS for each viewer format. YouTube explains this in its live encoder settings guidance.

Estimate how much data the stream sends

A useful estimate is: bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 ≈ decimal GB per hour. For example, an 8 Mbps stream is about 3.6 GB per hour (8 × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 bits per byte ÷ 1,000 megabytes per decimal GB), before protocol overhead and differences in provider metering. Multiply by the hours streamed to estimate a period’s usage, then compare it with your host’s usage meter and definition of billable transfer.

This is an estimate, not a VPS invoice calculation. Providers may define and measure traffic differently, and the title alone does not identify a plan, allowance, stream duration, or billing rule.

Choose a lower bitrate without guessing blindly

YouTube’s H.264 recommendations are useful starting points, not universal minimums. Its settings guidance, verified in 2026, recommends 8 Mbps for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. You can test lower targets if your content and quality requirements allow; judge the result using representative footage rather than assuming a lower rate will look the same.

Resolution, frame rate, codec, motion, and image detail all affect the bitrate needed for acceptable playback. A mostly static image may tolerate a lower target than fast-moving or highly detailed material, but the result depends on the actual source and encoder. YouTube’s table includes other resolutions and AV1/H.265 guidance; consult its current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before choosing those combinations.

Change FFmpeg’s output settings

Set the output video bitrate

Use FFmpeg’s -b:v option to set the encoded video bitrate. Audio has its own bitrate option, -b:a, so you can adjust it separately where appropriate. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output; place output encoding options after the input and before the output URL. The FFmpeg documentation demonstrates bitrate control with -b:v.

There is no safe universal command for an unspecified input, encoder, codec, stream-key setup, or number of outputs. Adapt the options to your installed FFmpeg build and selected encoder, and keep the YouTube stream key private.

Do not use streamcopy to lower bitrate

-c copy copies encoded packets without decoding and re-encoding them. It can avoid a generation loss when the source already has suitable parameters, but it does not lower the media bitrate by itself. If you need a lower encoded rate, use an encoder with a lower target or otherwise transform the video.

Account for audio and multiple outputs

Video is often the largest part of the stream, but audio also contributes to outbound transfer. Lowering audio bitrate can reduce that contribution; check that speech, music, or other documentary audio remains intelligible and suitable. Count every simultaneous output as well: a primary and a backup connection can require additional upload capacity. YouTube advises including both when applicable, then leaving headroom.

Keep delivery stable while reducing traffic

  • Use CBR as a starting point. YouTube recommends constant bitrate for its listed encoder settings. Follow the guidance for the codec and encoder you actually use.
  • Preserve the keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
  • Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends 20% room beyond the total bitrate being streamed. Its streaming tips say the total bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth.
  • Use RTMPS for encrypted delivery. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Encryption protects the connection; it is not a meaningful bandwidth-reduction setting. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

These settings address stream delivery, not YouTube’s separate copyright or monetization policies. Use material you have the rights to broadcast and check YouTube’s encoder live-stream setup guidance for the current process and requirements.

A practical measurement loop

  1. Record the current setup. Note the output video and audio bitrates, resolution, frame rate, codec, stream duration, and number of simultaneous outputs.
  2. Choose a target. Decide the minimum resolution and frame rate that suit the content, then select a lower bitrate to test. Use YouTube’s recommendations as a reference point, not a guarantee that a lower setting will look acceptable.
  3. Change output options. Set the video target with -b:v and, if useful, adjust audio separately with -b:a. Do not rely on -c copy to reduce bitrate.
  4. Test representative content. Include typical motion and audio. Check the incoming bitrate and stream health in YouTube, then compare the VPS transfer meter over a known interval.
  5. Adjust gradually. If quality is insufficient, raise the bitrate or restore resolution or frame rate. If delivery is unstable, check the VPS upload limit, headroom, and any duplicate outputs before reducing further.
  6. Project the billable period. Use the measured rate and planned streaming hours to estimate transfer, then compare that estimate with the provider’s included allowance and overage terms.

Common problems and fixes

  • Transfer barely changes after lowering video bitrate: Check the VPS meter over a comparable interval, include audio and protocol overhead, and verify whether another output or process is also sending data.
  • The picture becomes visibly worse: Raise the bitrate, reduce resolution or frame rate less aggressively, or test a different supported encoder/codec combination. Review the actual content; a setting that works for a static scene may fail on fast motion.
  • YouTube reports unstable stream health: Confirm the total outgoing bitrate fits the available VPS upload capacity with headroom. Include primary and backup outputs where used, and check the keyframe interval and encoder behavior.
  • The command still sends the original rate: Check that the setting is an output option in the correct position, that FFmpeg is encoding rather than streamcopying, and that the selected encoder honors the configured rate control.
  • The provider reports more usage than the estimate: Compare the same time window and units, review the host’s metering definition, and account for overhead or other outbound traffic. The estimate does not establish how a particular host bills.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops the uploaded material and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. It is not a way to reduce the bitrate of an FFmpeg stream already running on your VPS.

StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube only. Any quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encoding or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
