To keep a Raspberry Pi YouTube stream running through a mains interruption, size a UPS for the measured load of the entire live chain—not just the Pi—and test the switchover while a representative FFmpeg stream is running. Start with the exact Pi model, include any camera and network equipment that must stay online, and do not infer runtime from a power-supply rating or a UPS board’s maximum output current.
What a UPS must keep running
A UPS can keep the stream online only if every power-dependent link remains available. List the Pi, camera or capture device, USB peripherals, storage, fan, modem, router and Ethernet switch. If the router or modem loses power, the Pi may remain on but lose its path to YouTube.
Choose whether the backup should power only the Pi or the full chain. A Pi-focused UPS board and an AC UPS that powers the Pi’s normal adapter plus network equipment are different approaches; compare their documented output, connectors, transfer behavior and shutdown support rather than assuming they are interchangeable.
Match the UPS to your Raspberry Pi
Raspberry Pi’s recommended supply ratings are a baseline for choosing suitable power delivery, not a measurement of what FFmpeg streaming consumes. The official documentation says: “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply.” It also notes that recommended voltage is measured at the plug, so allow for cable loss. See Raspberry Pi’s power-supply documentation.

| Board | Recommended supply rating | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 5 and Pi 500 | 5 V at 5 A | A 5 V at 3 A supply limits Pi 5 peripheral power to 600 mA. |
| Raspberry Pi 4 Model B | 5 V at 3 A | Recommended supply rating, not measured stream draw. |
| Pi 3, Pi 2, Pi 1 and Zero models listed in the official table | 5 V at 2.5 A | Recommended supply rating, not measured stream draw. |
When comparing UPS candidates, verify regulated output voltage under load and continuous and peak current against the Pi and all attached devices. A HAT that physically fits the GPIO header is not automatically adequate. For example, the Pi-UpTime UPS 2.0 datasheet specifies 5.0 V output and a 2.5 A maximum, below the recommended supply rating for Pi 4 and Pi 5; it supports one or two 18650 Li-ion or Li-PO4 cells. The UPSafePi Rev. 1 manual, dated 2023-07-25, lists a 0–2 A average output range. Those specifications do not establish runtime for a live stream: Pi-UpTime UPS 2.0 and UPSafePi documentation.

Pi UPS board or HAT
A board designed for a Raspberry Pi can provide a compact, Pi-centered backup. Check its actual output-current limit, voltage regulation, connector and compatibility with your board and attached peripherals. Read whether it reports battery state, signals low battery, and has software that can shut the Pi down cleanly.

AC UPS for the adapter and network gear
An AC UPS can be considered when you need to back up the Pi’s normal power adapter and equipment such as a router, modem or switch together. Confirm that the unit’s input range and outlets match the equipment and local installation, and check its transfer behavior and documented battery capacity. Do not assume an AC UPS will keep the network online unless the network devices are plugged into its backed-up outlets.
Compare the details before buying
- Regulated output voltage under the expected load.
- Continuous and peak output current versus the measured Pi-plus-peripheral load.
- Battery chemistry and usable energy, not just cell count or a headline capacity.
- Runtime measured at a comparable load, if the maker documents it.
- Transfer gap and behavior during brownouts or brief outages.
- Low-battery notification and supported clean-shutdown integration.
- Connectors and compatibility with your precise Pi model and peripherals.
- Whether the router, modem and switch can also be powered.
- For an Indian purchase, the local unit’s input range, outlet standard, stock, warranty and replacement-battery availability.
Availability, prices and India warranties vary by seller and unit; verify these details directly before purchasing. Do not treat a product label such as “UPS” as proof of clean-shutdown support or a particular backup duration.

Estimate runtime from the real streaming load
There is no responsible universal runtime figure for “a Raspberry Pi streaming with FFmpeg.” Actual draw changes with the Pi model, encoding work, camera or capture device, USB accessories, cooling and networking gear. Official power-supply ratings and a UPS’s maximum output current describe supply capability, not battery runtime.
- Run the complete setup in a representative stream, with the intended resolution, frame rate, capture device and peripherals active.
- Measure the load at the relevant input using a suitable power meter or instrument. Include networking equipment if the UPS must keep it online.
- Compare the measured load with the UPS maker’s documented usable battery energy and conversion limits. Reserve enough energy for a controlled shutdown rather than planning to drain the battery completely.
- Test the actual outage scenario and record how long the full chain remains stable. Treat that result as specific to your setup and conditions, not as a general Pi runtime.
Set up and test the UPS before relying on it
- Identify the hardware. Record the Pi model, camera or capture device, USB equipment, storage, fan, and each network device required for the stream.
- Establish stable baseline power. Use a supply and cable appropriate for the board and connected devices. Raspberry Pi notes that voltage recommendations are measured at the plug and cable loss must be allowed for.
- Check UPS compatibility. Confirm output voltage and current, connectors, local mains compatibility, battery details, transfer behavior and support for low-battery shutdown on the exact candidate unit.
- Configure YouTube Live and FFmpeg. Follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the stream. Keep the stream key private; avoid putting it in public command histories, screenshots or shared configuration files.
- Run a controlled switchover test. Start a representative stream, then interrupt mains power as safely as the UPS design permits. Check that the Pi does not reboot, undervoltage warnings do not appear, capture remains stable, and the network path to YouTube is still available.
- Test low-battery behavior and restoration. Verify any configured warning and clean-shutdown path before the battery is depleted. Restore mains and check that the Pi boots safely and that the stream restarts or resumes as you intend.
Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings
UPS setup does not determine whether the encoder settings are suitable. YouTube Live’s guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, constant-bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data through Google’s servers. Its advanced settings list stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Consult the current YouTube Live encoder settings.

These platform settings do not prove that a particular Raspberry Pi can encode a chosen resolution and frame rate reliably. Test the target board under the actual streaming workload before relying on it; watch for encoding overload, dropped frames, undervoltage and network interruptions.

Treat the YouTube stream key as a secret credential. Enter it only in the intended encoder configuration, do not publish it, and reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. Also review YouTube’s current live-stream policies and account requirements before scheduling an always-on broadcast.
Troubleshooting a stream that fails during an outage
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Pi reboots or shows an undervoltage warning when mains drops | UPS output or cable cannot maintain the required voltage under load, or output-current capacity is insufficient. | Check voltage at the Pi under representative load, cable loss, UPS current limits and attached-device draw. Raspberry Pi documentation describes low-voltage detection below 4.63 V (±5%) on models since Pi B+ (2014), excluding the Zero range; see the power-supply documentation. |
| Pi stays on but YouTube stream disconnects | Router, modem, switch or upstream internet service lost power or connectivity. | Put every necessary network device on backup power, then test the complete connection path during an outage. |
| UPS shuts off before expected | Runtime was inferred from a rating rather than measured at the real load, or the battery has less usable energy than assumed. | Check the manufacturer’s usable-energy and load data, include peripherals in the measurement, and repeat a timed test. |
| Filesystem or stream is damaged after battery depletion | The system lost power without enough reserve for a clean shutdown. | Confirm the UPS provides battery-state reporting or a low-battery signal, and test supported shutdown software with adequate reserve. |
| Stream drops despite stable power | Encoder settings, capture workload, stream key or network conditions may be at fault rather than the UPS. | Check FFmpeg logs, YouTube’s live status, key configuration, dropped frames and the Pi’s ability to encode at the selected settings. |
