How to Switch Between Prerecorded Videos on a Cloud YouTube Stream

Switch prerecorded videos on an active YouTube stream by changing the playlist or source in your cloud playout service, not in YouTube.

To switch prerecorded videos without ending a YouTube live broadcast, change the playlist or active source in the cloud playout service that is sending the stream. YouTube receives that service’s outgoing program; it is not where you select the next video. The exact controls and whether a change is seamless vary by provider.

How the cloud-to-YouTube workflow works

A cloud playout service hosts or accesses your prerecorded media, plays the selected video or playlist, and sends the resulting live stream to YouTube. You create the broadcast in YouTube Studio, connect the service with the broadcast’s stream URL and stream key, then use the service’s controls to choose what plays. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming, but that listing does not document its current playlist controls or guarantee particular switching features: YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

There is no universal YouTube “Next video” button for this workflow. Find the playlist, schedule, or source controls in the cloud service itself, and check its current instructions for how edits take effect while a stream is live.

Steps to switch videos while the broadcast stays live

  1. Choose a cloud playout service. Confirm that it supports prerecorded-video playback to YouTube and the switching method you need: manual selection, an ordered playlist, or scheduled programming. YouTube’s listing of Gyre is an example of the category, not an endorsement or confirmation of its current feature set.
  2. Prepare the media and playback order. Upload the videos or make them available to the service, then arrange the desired playlist or sources using its interface. Upload limits, supported formats, transcoding, transitions, and whether changes can be made on air are provider-specific; consult the provider’s current documentation.
  3. Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule one in Live Control Room. Set the intended title, audience, and privacy before starting. If this is the channel’s first live stream, YouTube says enabling the feature may take up to 24 hours: YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  4. Connect the cloud service to the correct broadcast. Copy the broadcast’s YouTube stream URL and stream key into the matching fields in the cloud service. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to the channel. Confirm that the selected key belongs to the broadcast you intend to use.
  5. Start output and inspect the preview. Start the cloud service’s stream, then check YouTube Live Control Room for the incoming preview and stream health. YouTube’s production guide notes that a preview appears after it receives the encoder signal and that this does not mean the broadcast is live yet. If the broadcast is not configured to start automatically, use Live Control Room to start it after checking the preview: YouTube for Artists / Google: Full live production guide.
  6. Switch from the service’s on-air controls. While the YouTube broadcast remains active, select the next video, source, or playlist item in the cloud service. The service determines whether the change cuts immediately, waits for the current item to finish, or uses a transition. Test that behavior and audio continuity in a private or unlisted rehearsal; do not assume a switch is seamless.
  7. Close both sides deliberately. End the broadcast in YouTube and stop the cloud output according to the service’s current instructions. YouTube’s production guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; verify the archive and any desired replay settings afterward.

Choose the right kind of playback setup

Option Best fit What is established What to verify
StreamNeo Keeping prerecorded videos running continuously on a YouTube channel without leaving a computer on. Cloud playback for YouTube; one always-on stream per slot, playlists and 24/7 looping, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. Confirm your specific playlist and switching needs in the service before relying on a particular on-air control.
Gyre cloud playout Continuous prerecorded programming in the cloud. YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming, with Full HD/4K claims in the listing. The listing does not explain current playlist editing, transitions, or pricing.
Grabyo Producer A broader cloud production that may involve live sources, graphics, and remote production. YouTube describes it as a cloud-native live production platform with camera switching, graphics, and RTMP delivery, including YouTube. The cited page does not explicitly document prerecorded playlist switching.
OBS Studio A locally operated desktop encoder workflow. OBS Project community instructions describe connecting desktop OBS to YouTube and managing scheduled broadcasts. It is not cloud-hosted playback; the cited guide was last updated in 2021. See OBS Project Forums: How to stream to YouTube with OBS Studio.
Hardware encoder or switcher A physical production setup. YouTube’s verified encoder page includes hardware encoder listings. Hardware is not required for the cloud-hosted workflow.

For a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is #1 to consider: it runs prerecorded videos from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and includes a free first day. For camera-based shows, graphics, or live guests, evaluate a production platform’s documented live-source tools as well; StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only.

Rights and operational checks before going live

  • Clear the content for both live transmission and replay. YouTube’s production guide advises securing necessary clearances for the live stream, rebroadcast, and on-demand audio and video. A license for one use may not cover every use.
  • Rehearse the handoff. Check the sequence, transitions, audio levels, and what happens when an item ends or a playlist changes. These behaviors belong to the service, so verify them in the actual account rather than assuming another provider works the same way.
  • Check privacy and end behavior. Make sure the broadcast’s visibility is appropriate and know which side—YouTube or the cloud service—must be stopped to end the session cleanly.
  • Protect the stream key. Do not publish or share it. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the cloud service with the new key before streaming again.

See the YouTube for Artists / Google full live production guide for YouTube’s production guidance.

Troubleshooting a video switch or stream that will not start

  • YouTube shows no preview: Confirm the cloud output is running and that the stream URL and key match the intended broadcast. Wait for the encoder signal, then check Live Control Room again. If the channel has never streamed live, enablement may take up to 24 hours.
  • The preview appears but viewers cannot see the broadcast: A preview is not the same as going live. Check whether the broadcast requires you to click Go Live in Live Control Room.
  • The wrong video plays or the switch has no effect: Check the active source, playlist order, and whether the service applies edits immediately or only after the current item. Those details are provider-specific.
  • The picture or audio cuts during a change: Test the transition and audio continuity in a private or unlisted rehearsal, then adjust the playlist or transition settings available in the service.
  • The stream ends unexpectedly: Check both the cloud service’s output status and YouTube Live Control Room. Follow the provider’s recovery instructions; do not assume every service resumes in the same way.
