To stream a video stored in Google Drive to YouTube Live with FFmpeg on a VPS, first download the authorized video file to the VPS, then use FFmpeg to send it to YouTube’s current RTMPS ingestion address with the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. A normal Drive share link is not a dependable substitute for an authenticated download. The steps below cover access, download, setup, an example command, settings, and troubleshooting.
How the workflow fits together
The data path is Google Drive → VPS storage → FFmpeg → YouTube Live. FFmpeg reads a local file on the VPS and sends an encoder stream to YouTube. This direct setup does not require Google Cloud’s managed Live Stream API, which is a separate service that processes live inputs into HLS or DASH output.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Retrieve the current ingestion details from YouTube Live Control Room rather than relying on a copied or outdated endpoint. Keep the stream key private.
Before you start
- A raw video file in Drive that you are authorized to download. Workspace documents such as Google Docs are not raw video files and need an export workflow instead.
- A VPS with enough disk space for the downloaded file. If you transcode rather than copy, it also needs adequate CPU capacity; the required resources depend on the source and output settings.
- FFmpeg installed on the VPS, plus network access to download the file and sustain the chosen streaming bitrate.
- A YouTube channel able to start a live stream, with its current RTMPS ingestion details and stream key available in Live Control Room.
1. Confirm Drive access and download the video
Drive access depends on authorization and sharing permissions. For a raw Drive file, Google documents downloading content through the Drive API’s files.get method with alt=media. Use credentials with a content-readable scope, and check whether the file’s capabilities.canDownload value is true. Owners or shared-drive organizers may restrict downloads.

A public-looking share URL should not be assumed to work as a direct FFmpeg input. The documented, predictable approach is to authenticate, download the file to VPS storage, and pass the local path to FFmpeg. Follow Google’s Drive download and export guide for the API authorization and download details.
After downloading, confirm that the file is complete and readable. For example, inspect it with ffprobe /path/to/video.mp4 if ffprobe is installed alongside FFmpeg. Avoid printing access tokens in command output or logs, and do not put credentials or stream keys in public scripts, screenshots, or shell history.
2. Get YouTube’s RTMPS address and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Choose or create the stream, then copy the current stream URL/ingestion address and stream key shown for it. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes the ingestion address and stream URL/name handling; the values for your stream should come from the current Control Room details.
- Keep the key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
Depending on the FFmpeg output syntax, the ingestion address and stream key may be supplied separately or combined into the output URL. Do not assume a key format or endpoint from an old tutorial.
3. Choose stream copy or transcoding
Use stream copy when the source is already suitable
Stream copy avoids decoding and re-encoding the video and audio, reducing CPU use and preserving the source streams. It is appropriate only if the file’s codecs, frame rate, resolution, audio, and container are compatible with YouTube ingestion and the chosen output arrangement. Copying does not make an incompatible source compatible.

Transcode when you need a compatible output
Transcoding lets you set an output codec, frame rate, resolution, and bitrate. It consumes VPS CPU resources, particularly at higher resolutions or frame rates. Check the source with ffprobe, choose an output profile that fits it, and verify the VPS can encode in real time. A stream that falls behind because the encoder cannot keep up will not behave like a reliable live feed.
4. Send the file as a live stream
The following is an example command pattern, not a tested command for every FFmpeg build, input, or YouTube stream configuration. Replace the placeholders with your local file and current YouTube ingestion details, and validate it with a short test before relying on it.
For a compatible source where stream copy is appropriate:
ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/video.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_ADDRESS/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

The -re option reads the file at its native rate instead of sending it as fast as the VPS can read it. The RTMPS URL format depends on the current address and how YouTube supplies the key; construct it according to the details provided for your stream. Protect the command if it contains the key, since shell history or process listings may expose it on some systems.
If transcoding is needed, a basic H.264/AAC example is:
ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/video.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M -r 30 -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_ADDRESS/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This example targets H.264 1080p30-style video settings and assumes the input’s dimensions and other properties are appropriate; it is not a universal profile. Add explicit scaling only if you need to change resolution, and confirm the resulting frame rate and output characteristics. YouTube’s encoder settings page recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for H.264 1080p60. These are recommendations, not universal minimums. Select the relevant value from YouTube’s full settings table for your codec and frame rate rather than extrapolating from those examples.

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. In the example, -g 60 corresponds to 60 frames, or two seconds, at 30 fps. If you change the frame rate, adjust the GOP/keyframe interval accordingly. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current recommendations.
5. Test and monitor the stream
- Run a short test with representative video motion and audio before scheduling or relying on a longer stream.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and preview, and read any encoder or connection warnings there.
- Make sure the VPS’s sustained upload capacity exceeds the selected video and audio bitrate with practical headroom for network variation. A nominal VPS port speed alone does not prove a stable sustained upload.
- Confirm that FFmpeg continues to run and that the video and audio remain synchronized and intelligible.
YouTube advises performing a preflight test and monitoring stream health. The suitable VPS CPU, memory, and network plan cannot be determined from resolution alone: it depends on whether FFmpeg copies or encodes, source characteristics, and actual available bandwidth.

Drive download returns an authorization or permission error
Check that the credentials have content-read access, that the file is available to that account, and that downloads are permitted. For shared-drive content, ask an owner or organizer whether download restrictions apply. A share link being viewable does not establish that API download access is allowed.
The downloaded file is incomplete or FFmpeg cannot read it
Verify the download completed successfully and that the local path is correct. Inspect the file with ffprobe; if it reports a missing stream, unsupported format, or damaged input, download the source again or use an authorized export for the actual file type.

YouTube does not receive the encoder stream
Recheck the current RTMPS address and stream key in Live Control Room, and confirm the output URL is assembled in the format expected by your FFmpeg command. Check that the key has not been reset, that outbound connections from the VPS are allowed, and that the process is still running. Never paste a live key into a public troubleshooting post.
The stream buffers, drops frames, or reports poor health
Compare the configured bitrate with sustained VPS upload capacity. Reduce output bitrate or resolution if the network cannot sustain it, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. If transcoding, check whether the VPS can encode at the target frame rate; if not, use a faster preset or a more capable VPS, or copy compatible source streams instead.
The file plays too quickly or the output is not live-paced
Ensure the input is read at its native rate with -re for this file-based workflow. Check the FFmpeg logs and YouTube preview to confirm the stream advances at the expected pace.
