Sometimes—but YouTube’s player adapting to a video does not guarantee that a 24/7 streaming service can combine differently shaped clips cleanly. YouTube says its player adjusts to each video’s size. The service still has to decide what happens to each clip as it feeds a continuous live stream: preserve it, resize it, crop it or add padding. Check that behavior with the provider and test a short playlist before scheduling a long broadcast.
Two different stages determine what viewers see
YouTube playback adapts to the video
YouTube’s standard computer player is 16:9, but YouTube Help says the player automatically adapts to the size of each individual video and the viewer’s device. Some formats, including vertical 9:16 video in a computer browser, may appear with padding around them. YouTube recommends not baking padding or black bars into the encoded picture, so the player can size the video dynamically.
A 24/7 service has to create the incoming feed
Before the YouTube player can display a clip, the streaming service must send it as part of the live feed. If a playlist changes from landscape to portrait, the service may preserve the source dimensions, resize it, crop it or place it within a fixed-size frame. Those choices affect the live output, and YouTube’s player guidance does not specify which choice a particular service makes.
In other words, a video looking correct when uploaded to YouTube does not establish how that same video will look when inserted into a continuous stream assembled by a third-party service.

What the published service guidance establishes
OneStream Live
OneStream Live documents a 24/7 prerecorded-stream workflow for YouTube. Its instructions say the feature requires Enterprise, allow users to select videos from a device, OneStream storage or cloud storage, and state a maximum stream duration of 30 days. The 24/7 instructions do not specify how a playlist with mixed aspect ratios is handled—whether clips are cropped, padded, resized or passed through unchanged.
Its separate video-settings guidance recommends landscape sources at 1920Ă—1080 (16:9) and portrait sources at 1080Ă—1920 (9:16), and recommends uploading videos in their original orientation to avoid cropping or distortion. Those are source-video recommendations, not a guarantee about how differently shaped clips behave when played back-to-back in one 24/7 stream.

Do not confuse YouTube’s dual-format live feature with mixed-clip handling
YouTube documents a live option for sending horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 formats simultaneously through Live Control Room. The default vertical output is a center crop of the horizontal stream. That is a dual-output live feature; it does not establish that a 24/7 service will normalize a playlist made from separately encoded landscape and portrait videos.
Likewise, YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes a continuously active 24/7 broadcast alongside a separate interview broadcast using the same incoming stream. That describes broadcast and stream resources, not how a prerecorded playlist with changing source dimensions is transcoded.

How to check a mixed-ratio playlist before going live
- Ask the provider specific questions. Confirm whether one playlist can contain landscape and portrait files, and whether the service preserves, resizes, crops or pads each clip. Ask whether the outgoing live dimensions stay fixed or change at clip boundaries.
- Clarify the intended YouTube format. Decide whether the stream should be landscape, vertical or use YouTube’s documented dual-format live option. Do not assume the dual-format feature handles a playlist of separate files automatically.
- Build a short representative playlist. Include at least one clip in each aspect ratio and resolution you intend to use, with a transition from landscape to portrait and back. Use the actual service settings you plan to schedule.
- Check the result as a viewer. Watch the live output on a computer and a phone. Look for cut-off subjects or text, unexpected black bars, distortion, blank transitions, or abrupt changes in framing or player shape.
- Proceed only when the result is acceptable. If the service’s treatment cannot be confirmed or the test looks wrong, ask the provider for a supported workflow or prepare consistent source files. Do not assume that YouTube will correct framing choices already made upstream.
Should you convert everything to 16:9 first?
Not automatically. YouTube’s player can adapt to a video’s dimensions, and YouTube recommends leaving padding and black bars out of the encoded picture. Converting every portrait video into a 16:9 file may require cropping it or adding side bars, either of which changes the viewing result. Choose a consistent canvas only if the streaming service or the visual style you want requires one.
If you do create a fixed-format version, inspect the whole frame before using it: a center crop can remove faces, captions, logos or other important content. Keeping the original orientation is a separate, reasonable approach when the service supports it—but confirm that the service can move between orientations as intended.
