You generally cannot change a concat playlist file and expect a running FFmpeg process to notice. FFmpeg documents the concat demuxer as a way to read a prepared sequence of files, not as a live playlist control. To change what plays while keeping the publishing process open, put a scheduler or producer before FFmpeg and have it supply one continuous input stream. That is an architecture pattern, not a guaranteed YouTube-specific switch; test it with your media, FFmpeg build, and destination.
Can you edit an FFmpeg playlist while the stream is running?
Not reliably by editing the file that FFmpeg already opened. The concat demuxer reads a script and presents the listed files in sequence. FFmpeg’s documentation does not say that it watches that script for edits or reloads it as playback continues. Plan a concat list as a fixed sequence for a process run, rather than a live control panel. FFmpeg’s documentation describes the demuxer and its requirements.
Stopping and starting FFmpeg with a modified list may change the sequence, but that is a process restart, not a live playlist update. Whether a restart preserves a particular YouTube Live event or what viewers experience during it is not established by the FFmpeg sources cited here. Do not treat a playlist technique as a guarantee of uninterrupted YouTube playback.
Use a concat list for a fixed sequence
For a sequence decided in advance, create a text file such as playlist.txt with one file entry per line:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
file '/media/intro.mp4'
file '/media/film-part-1.mp4'
file '/media/film-part-2.mp4'
Then run FFmpeg with the concat demuxer as the input. For example, this command stream-copies the input streams to an RTMP destination:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy -f flv "rtmp://YOUR_INGEST_ADDRESS/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
Replace the destination with the ingest address and stream key provided by your streaming setup; treat the key as a secret and do not publish it in scripts or logs. This is a schematic FFmpeg example, not a YouTube-verified ingest recipe. Confirm the current ingest details and supported settings in the platform’s own documentation before using it.

Make the source files compatible
The concat demuxer expects the listed files to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. FFmpeg’s documentation states, “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Differences in duration can also affect timestamp adjustment; an incorrect duration may lead to artifacts. If your documentary segments differ in codec, dimensions, time base, or audio/video layout, do not assume -c copy will reconcile them. Normalize the media or use a filter/re-encoding workflow suited to the files.
Paths and escaping
Use correctly quoted and escaped paths in the concat script, especially when file names contain spaces or special characters. Check the concat demuxer documentation for the syntax that applies to your paths and local FFmpeg build.

For a changing playlist, separate scheduling from publishing
If the next video must be selectable while publishing continues, keep the output-facing FFmpeg process open and change the media supplied upstream. A scheduler or producer can choose the next item and feed FFmpeg a continuous media stream; FFmpeg then handles the output connection. This separates two jobs: choosing what plays and maintaining the publishing process.
This is an engineering pattern inferred from FFmpeg’s input/output pipeline, not an official universal live-playlist command. The scheduler must handle transitions and deliver stream properties and timestamps that FFmpeg can process continuously. Validate the actual source changes, codecs, timestamps, and output behavior in your environment before relying on it for a live event.

Choose the appropriate concat method
| Method | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | A prepared sequence of compatible files, especially when avoiding re-encoding. | It is not documented as a live-reloading playlist. Files need matching stream characteristics and time bases. |
| Concat filter | Joining media when decoding, filtering, or re-encoding is needed. | Requires processing rather than simply copying packets; configure it for the actual streams and inputs. |
| Concat protocol | File-level concatenation where the media format permits it. | It is not a general-purpose dynamic playlist mechanism. |
| FIFO muxer | Queueing between encoding and muxing, with configurable handling for certain output problems. | It is output-side buffering and recovery, not a playlist selector or input reload mechanism. |
FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes the concat methods. Its FIFO muxer documentation describes queueing and output handling, not changing the input video.
Stream copy versus re-encoding
-c copy avoids decoding and encoding, which can reduce processing work, but it cannot apply filters. Stream copy can also fail when the target container needs information that is missing from the source. If you need to normalize varying sources or apply a concat filter, choose an encoding configuration appropriate to the files and available compute rather than expecting stream copy to fix incompatibility. See FFmpeg’s command-line documentation.

Test before relying on a live switch
- Check the installed version and local documentation. FFmpeg’s online documentation tracks the newest revision; the project recommends consulting local documentation when using an older build. See FFmpeg documentation versioning.
- Test the exact media set. Confirm stream layouts, codecs, time bases, dimensions, and durations, then test each transition the scheduler may make.
- Check timestamps and continuity. Watch FFmpeg’s output for timestamp or muxing errors and review the resulting stream for gaps, freezes, or unexpected audio/video changes.
- Test output recovery separately. FIFO handling may help with certain output-side problems, but it does not choose another file. Verify reconnection and viewer behavior with your actual destination and setup; FFmpeg’s concat documentation alone cannot establish YouTube session behavior.
- Review rights and platform rules. Only stream material you have permission to use, and check YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright requirements. Replaying a documentary or other recorded program does not itself establish that you have the necessary rights.
Common problems and what to check
- An edit to the list does not change playback: the process is consuming its existing input; the concat demuxer is not documented to reload an open script. Use a scheduler upstream or deliberately restart, after validating the destination behavior.
- Concat errors or corrupted transitions: compare the files’ streams, codecs, time bases, and durations. Normalize incompatible inputs or use a filter/re-encoding approach.
- Stream copy fails: inspect source streams and target container requirements. Copy mode cannot add information absent from the source or apply a filter.
- Timestamp artifacts appear: check duration metadata and timestamp handling for each file; concat timestamp adjustment relies on file durations.
- The output stalls after a source change: inspect the producer-to-FFmpeg handoff, stream properties, and timestamps. FIFO may buffer output-side data but will not make an upstream scheduler select a new video.
