To insert a mid-roll ad break yourself, open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, turn monetization on, select Manual for live mid-roll ads, then trigger each break while the stream is live. The documented workflow is the same for a 24/7 stream; YouTube does not describe a separate procedure for continuous broadcasts.
Set the live stream’s mid-roll mode to Manual
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Open the stream’s Edit → Monetization settings and make sure monetization is On.
- In the live ad settings, choose Manual for mid-roll ads. YouTube also offers automatic and scheduled options; scheduled intervals are 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes.
- While the stream is live, use the manual ad-break control in Live Control Room each time you want to create a mid-roll opportunity.
YouTube’s official guidance states: “If you do not insert any mid-roll ad breaks, no mid-rolls will be served.” Selecting Manual therefore means you decide whether and when to create break opportunities; it does not cause breaks to run automatically.
What viewers experience when you insert a break
A manual break creates an opportunity for YouTube to show an ad, not a guarantee that every viewer will see one. Some viewers may receive an ad and return to the stream after it ends or they skip it. Viewers who do not receive an ad continue watching the stream.
YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls and says manual or scheduled selection may have lower earnings potential. That is a platform-level recommendation, not a prediction of what a particular channel will earn. YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels that turned on automatic live mid-rolls compared with channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. That reported comparison is not a promised result for an individual creator.

Manual, scheduled, or automatic: which mode fits?
