Task Scheduler can start OBS; it does not make OBS a dependable unattended streaming service or guarantee recovery after a crash or network interruption. Treat this as a setup to test and monitor—not a set-and-forget broadcast.
What “without leaving the desktop open” means
You do not need to leave the Windows desktop in view or manually click OBS each time. You can configure Windows Task Scheduler to launch OBS at startup or on a schedule. The PC itself still has to be on and able to run OBS locally; scheduling the application does not move the work to the cloud or guarantee that a live stream stays connected.
OBS Project community guidance describes scheduled or login-based launches as possible, while cautioning that OBS is not designed for noninteractive unattended streaming. Microsoft’s Task Scheduler documentation explains how Windows schedules applications and tasks, but it is not an OBS-specific reliability guide. Check YouTube eligibility and the audience setting first
Confirm the channel can livestream
YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. The stream must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. These prerequisites do not establish that a live broadcast can remain active indefinitely. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance before configuring the broadcast.

Decide whether the stories are made for kids
YouTube identifies stories, songs, child-oriented language, and characters as factors that can indicate content is directed to children. Creators worldwide are responsible for accurately designating whether content is made for kids, taking applicable laws into account. A story stream can be child-directed even if children are not its only or primary audience. Set the audience status honestly in YouTube Studio; if the right designation is unclear, YouTube advises creators to seek legal advice. See YouTube’s audience-setting guidance.
Plan around made-for-kids restrictions
For live streams designated made for kids, YouTube disables live chat, chat replay, comments on live-stream archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled on live streams and Premieres, though contextual ads may be shown. Design the viewing experience and revenue expectations around those limits. Prepare OBS before automating it
First build and test the stream manually. Task Scheduler can open an application, but it cannot correct an incomplete OBS scene, missing media, a bad stream key, or a source that fails after reboot.
- Prepare the story media. Put the finished videos and any required audio in stable locations on the Windows PC. Confirm that the files play and that the sequence or loop behaves as intended.
- Set up an OBS scene and profile. Add the media sources needed for the stream and confirm the picture and audio are present. Save the profile and scene collection you intend to use; do not assume a scheduled launch will choose the correct setup without testing.
- Configure the YouTube destination. In OBS, select YouTube as the streaming service and provide the stream key associated with the intended YouTube broadcast. Treat the key as a secret: anyone with access to it may be able to stream to your channel. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Test a manual start. Start the stream from OBS, then confirm in YouTube Studio that the intended video and audio are arriving. Stop the test cleanly before setting up automation.
- Save and note the exact working configuration. Record which OBS profile, scene collection, YouTube destination, and media paths passed the test. These are the items to verify when OBS starts automatically.
This assignment’s source material does not establish recommended encoder, bitrate, resolution, keyframe, or hardware settings for a continuous Windows encode. Choose settings based on the actual media, connection, and system, then test the complete workload rather than treating an unverified preset as a 24/7 guarantee.

Schedule OBS with Windows Task Scheduler
Task Scheduler can launch applications at startup or according to a schedule. Because available options and labels can vary by Windows version, follow the equivalent task-creation workflow in your edition rather than relying on an unverified click-by-click path.
- Open Task Scheduler from the Windows Start menu.
- Create a task with a trigger for the event you need, such as system startup or a chosen schedule. Configure whether it should run only when a user is logged on or under another available task condition; test the behavior on the target PC.
- Set the action to start the OBS executable installed on that PC. OBS supports launch parameters, but the sources cited here do not verify a particular parameter set for a reliable unattended stream. Start with a basic launch and confirm which profile and scenes OBS actually loads.
- Review the task’s conditions and settings. A condition that requires an idle PC, a particular power state, or a network state may prevent a run; confirm the chosen settings match how the computer will be used.
- Save the task, run it once manually from Task Scheduler, and check OBS and YouTube Studio. Then test the trigger you plan to rely on, including what happens after a full Windows restart.
Microsoft’s Task Scheduler documentation covers the Windows scheduling feature generally. It does not promise that OBS will reconnect to YouTube, restore every source, or recover from a failure.

Test failure and recovery before relying on the stream
Run these checks on the actual computer and network. A successful launch test alone does not show that the stream can recover from an interruption.
- Full reboot: Restart Windows and verify that the scheduled task fires, OBS opens with the intended profile and media, and YouTube receives the stream.
- Network interruption: Briefly interrupt the connection during a supervised test. Check whether OBS reconnects and whether the YouTube broadcast resumes; the cited guidance does not establish that recovery is automatic.
- Sleep and power behavior: Confirm the computer does not sleep or hibernate while expected to stream, and check that its power settings remain suitable after updates or manual changes.
- Media and audio: Verify that video sources still resolve after restart and that audio continues rather than silently stopping or repeating incorrectly.
- Updates and sign-in: Check how Windows or OBS updates, account prompts, and any required user session affect the task. A scheduled launch is not proof that later changes will preserve the working configuration.
- Power and connectivity: The PC needs electricity and internet access for a local stream. Backup power may be a reliability consideration, but no particular backup unit or runtime is established here.

Use an existing PC or choose a dedicated host?
A new computer is not required if you already have a Windows PC that can run the tested OBS workload. A dedicated Windows host can separate streaming from everyday use, but no minimum CPU, GPU, memory, heat, power, or sustained-performance specification is established here. Check the prospective computer’s specifications against your actual media and test it under the intended workload before depending on it. A compact mini PC is one possible form factor, not a validated guarantee of suitability.
