If a YouTube radio livestream ends during a quiet passage, first find out which component is stopping it. YouTube documents an Auto-start & auto-stop setting and says an encoder stream ends when the encoder stops sending content; its reviewed help pages do not document a YouTube-side silence detector or a universal switch to disable one. Check the stream setting and your encoder or broadcast software’s own silence, idle-timeout, or automation controls, then test the full setup with representative quiet audio.
First identify what is ending the stream
A stream can stop because of a YouTube stream setting or because the encoder or production workflow stops its outgoing feed. These are different controls, so changing one may not fix the other.

YouTube’s encoder instructions say, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” Scheduled streams also have an End Stream action in Live Control Room. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. That describes how a stream ends; it does not establish that YouTube detects silence and ends it.
Check YouTube’s stream settings
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room for the stream.
- Open the stream’s settings and find Auto-start & auto-stop.
- Check whether auto-stop is enabled. If it is, determine whether your intended workflow requires the encoder to be able to stop the stream. Change the setting only if it matches your setup.
- If you created the stream by reusing existing settings, verify the copied Auto-start & auto-stop choices rather than assuming they match your current workflow.
Auto-stop is a stream start/stop option, not a documented audio-silence threshold. If the setting does not explain the interruption, inspect the software sending the stream.

Inspect the encoder or broadcast software
Open the application that plays and sends your radio stream. Look for controls or automation rules related to silence detection, audio inactivity, idle timeout, stop on no signal, or automatic stop. These are useful search terms, not verified menu labels for any particular encoder.
- If a rule stops the stream after a quiet interval, disable its stop action or adjust its threshold or timeout to suit the programme, if the software allows it.
- Check whether the playback source itself pauses, ends, or fails to loop when a track or playlist reaches a quiet interval.
- Confirm that the encoder continues sending a valid stream during silence. Low-level ambience may be part of the programme, but adding artificial tone or noise should not be the default fix: it can alter the audio and does not correct a mistaken stop rule.
The exact clicks depend on the encoder and its version. Without that information, a brand-specific menu path would be guesswork.

Test the quiet passages that matter
- Use a private or unlisted test with the same playback chain, encoder, and stream configuration intended for the radio channel.
- Include representative quiet sections, including the longest pauses the programme is expected to contain.
- Watch the encoder to confirm it remains connected and continues sending content through those passages.
- Monitor the YouTube stream’s health and check both audio and video. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream quality. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips.
- If the test still ends, note whether the encoder stopped sending content or whether the stream ended while its feed continued. That distinction helps isolate the responsible control.
Test failover separately and keep a local recording
Failover is not silence handling
If your production setup has a backup encoder, test it as a separate recovery measure. YouTube suggests stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then confirming playback moves to the backup. YouTube Help: Set up an encoder for live streaming. A successful failover test does not show that a silence-triggered stop rule has been fixed.
Protect the programme recording
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
