To stream a prerecorded gaming video as a YouTube Live event, play the local VOD through an encoder such as OBS Studio, connect the encoder to a live event in YouTube Studio, check the preview and stream health, then start the broadcast. YouTube does not simply take a video file and turn it into a live event: your PC and encoder send the video and audio feed. This guide covers that encoder-fed Live workflow, not an ordinary upload or Premiere.
Before you start: check livestream eligibility
YouTube requires a verified channel with no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Livestreamers must be at least 16 years old. Enabling livestreaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so activate and check your channel well before the planned broadcast. Create the YouTube Live event

In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming controls and create or schedule a live event. Set its title, description, visibility, audience setting, and schedule as appropriate.

Choose the encoder workflow. YouTube Studio supplies the event connection details, including a stream key. The key connects OBS to the event and acts as a credential; YouTube describes it as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep it private: do not show it in a tutorial, screen capture, or public chat. Leave the event available in YouTube Studio so you can confirm that the incoming feed reaches the correct event before going live.
Set up OBS to play the gaming VOD
OBS is one software-encoder option for sending gameplay and other audio/video to YouTube. The precise labels and menus can vary by OBS version, so use the current controls in your installed version rather than relying on a screenshot from an older release.

Open OBS and create a scene for the broadcast. In that scene, add a Media Source and select the gaming VOD stored on your Windows PC. Check that the picture fits the canvas and that the source’s audio is present.

Decide what should happen when the file reaches its end. Configure the media source to stop or restart according to the intended broadcast, and test the result. If it stops, decide what viewers should see after playback ends; do not assume OBS will automatically end the YouTube event or schedule itself to start unattended.

Connect OBS to the YouTube event. Select YouTube as the service if it is offered in your installed version, or enter the current server and stream-key details provided for the event. Treat the stream key as a password and never share it.

Check audio routing before the event. The Media Source should carry the VOD’s audio; avoid also capturing the same playback through desktop audio if that would create a duplicate or echo. If you plan live commentary, test the microphone and balance it against the game audio.

Adding a local file as a Media Source is the practical way to feed a prerecorded video through the encoder; it is not an upload-to-YouTube-and-auto-start feature.
Choose quality and test the feed
Set a quality your internet connection can reliably sustain. YouTube recommends testing upload capacity, using constant bitrate (CBR), and preferring RTMPS. Its encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s current resolution-specific bitrate table rather than applying one bitrate to every resolution: YouTube live encoder settings.

Start the OBS feed before making the event public. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm the correct event receives the feed and inspect the preview and stream-health messages.

Test moving gameplay footage and audio—not just a static screen—so you can catch dropped frames, missing sound, clipping, or synchronization problems. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream and reviewing encoder messages. See its setup and troubleshooting guidance.

When the preview and sound are right, start the live event deliberately in the controls available for that event. Monitor the stream while it runs, then stop it deliberately when finished and check the resulting archive if you want one retained.
A VOD-only broadcast does not require a webcam, external microphone, headphones, or capture card. A microphone is useful if you will speak live over the video; a capture card is relevant when the source is an external console or device, not when the VOD is already on the Windows PC. YouTube lists microphones, webcams, and headphones as common equipment for gaming and casual streams, not prerequisites: YouTube’s setup guide.

Check rights and YouTube policies
Prerecording does not exempt a live VOD from copyright checks or YouTube’s rules. All live content must follow the Community Guidelines and YouTube’s Terms of Service. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; it may replace the image with a placeholder and warn you, and can interrupt or terminate a stream if the material remains. A completed live archive may also receive a Content ID claim. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and Content ID information.

Check the game publisher’s permissions for streaming gameplay, including any limits on commercial use or specific content.

Check rights for soundtrack music, overlays, clips, and any other material added to the VOD. Owning the game or holding a license does not by itself guarantee that automated checks will not interrupt the stream.

If you are licensed to use third-party material, confirm the applicable permissions and ask the rights holder whether your channel needs to be added to an allowlist to avoid interruption.
