Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can run a continuous YouTube stream from a Mac mini by using encoder software such as OBS Studio: create a stream in YouTube Studio, enter its stream URL and key in OBS, then start the encoder and monitor the live preview. The Mac must stay powered on and connected for a locally hosted stream to continue. For looping pre-recorded videos without leaving a computer running, a cloud service is another option.
Choose local streaming or cloud playback
A Mac mini is the host; an encoder converts and sends its video to YouTube. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. OBS Studio is one free, open-source software option listed in YouTube’s encoder directory, with installation instructions for macOS.
A Mac-hosted encoder makes sense when you need to control a live scene or have local inputs and production elements. For pre-recorded material intended to loop unattended, local streaming means the Mac, encoder, network connection, and power must remain available. YouTube’s encoder directory also lists cloud services for continuous pre-recorded playback; directory descriptions are vendor information, not independent reliability tests.
- Use a local encoder when you need scene control or a live production workflow.
- Consider a cloud option when you want uploaded recordings to play continuously without keeping a dedicated computer online.
- For either approach, check current service terms, costs, content rights, interruption recovery, and how recordings or archives are handled.
Prepare the YouTube channel and stream
- Check eligibility early. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so complete this before the planned start.
- Install OBS Studio. The OBS Mac installation instructions say to download the macOS disk image and drag OBS into Applications. That installation page dates to 2021, so check current OBS and macOS compatibility when installing.
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Open Create → Go Live and use the Stream tab. Set the title, privacy, and stream settings. YouTube’s interface can change, so follow the current prompts in Live Control Room.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream settings, obtain YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio before reconnecting your encoder.
Connect OBS and go live
- In OBS, open the stream settings and select YouTube or enter the server/stream URL and stream key supplied by YouTube, according to the current OBS interface.
- Set the video and audio output as described below. Start streaming from OBS to send an incoming feed to YouTube.
- Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check that the picture moves as expected and that audio is present and intelligible.
- Start or confirm the public event in YouTube Studio when prompted. Verify the published watch page from another device or browser.
YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported. Its current encoder guidance also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), with keyframes every two seconds and no interval over four seconds.

Choose resolution, bitrate, and audio settings
Use a quality setting your actual upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s settings are recommendations, not a measurement of your internet connection or a guarantee of stable delivery. Test the stream with similar motion and audio to the intended broadcast, and watch stream health in Live Control Room.
| Setting | YouTube guidance | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 at 1080p30 | 10 Mbps recommended bitrate | A 30 fps target; test actual upload stability and leave room for other network use. |
| H.264 at 1080p60 | 17 Mbps recommended bitrate | Use when 60 fps is needed and the connection can sustain it; otherwise test a lower frame rate or resolution. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | Set in the encoder’s output or video settings. |
| Rate control | CBR recommended | Use constant bitrate rather than a variable target for the live encoder output. |
| Stereo audio | 128 Kbps; 44.1 KHz sample rate | Check both encoder configuration and the incoming preview for clean sound. |
The bitrate figures are YouTube Help recommendations current as accessed in 2026; they are not required internet-plan speeds. Upload bandwidth fluctuates, and concurrent household or office traffic consumes capacity. Test the connection during the hours you expect to stream and monitor stream health rather than relying on a single speed-test result.

Test the continuous-run plan before relying on it
A successful short preview does not establish that a Mac mini will run continuously or recover from every interruption. YouTube’s published guidance does not specify a minimum Mac mini model or validated maximum duration for a Mac-hosted stream. Test the full workflow and hardware you intend to use.
- Run the complete scene or playlist with the actual audio and video, then inspect the public watch page on another device.
- Check that the audio stays audible and the picture continues moving; a frozen frame or silent source can be mistaken for a healthy stream.
- If using OBS local recording, check the saved file and available disk space.
- For unattended use, test what happens if the Mac restarts, OBS closes, the network disconnects, or the power is interrupted. These are prudent checks, not guarantees that service will resume automatically.
- Monitor the Live Control Room’s stream health during the event and address warnings before leaving the setup unattended.
Plan for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer uninterrupted broadcast will be saved as one complete video: the cited guidance does not establish that outcome or a universal Mac mini method for rotating segments. If you need a retained recording, plan and test recording and retention separately before the stream begins.

Copyright and channel-policy checks for documentaries
Having permission to play a file locally does not by itself establish that you may broadcast it on YouTube. Before scheduling a documentary, confirm that you control or have the necessary rights for the film, music, narration, photographs, and other included material. A continuous loop does not remove copyright obligations. YouTube may restrict live streaming, and a channel can face claims or other enforcement where rights are not cleared. Review the platform’s current rules and keep documentation for licenses or permissions.
Also consider whether a channel built around repeated or minimally transformed uploads meets YouTube’s current monetization policies. Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are different questions; neither should be assumed from the fact that a stream is technically online.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming video | The encoder is not sending, or the URL/key is incorrect. | Check OBS is streaming, re-enter the current YouTube URL and key, and confirm the stream is selected in Live Control Room. |
| The preview appears but the event is not public | The event still needs to be started or confirmed in Studio. | Follow the current Live Control Room prompt and verify the public watch page. |
| Stream health reports connection problems | Upload capacity may be insufficient or unstable, or other traffic is competing for bandwidth. | Test at the intended time, reduce resolution or frame rate, and confirm CBR and the recommended keyframe interval. |
| Viewers hear no sound | The source may be muted, routed incorrectly, or configured with the wrong audio device. | Check OBS audio meters and source/device selection, then listen to the YouTube preview. |
| The stream stops when leaving the Mac | The local encoder, computer, network, or power stopped. | Check whether the Mac slept or restarted, OBS remained open, and the network and power stayed available. A local setup depends on those components. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | Someone else could use the key to send a feed to the channel. | Reset the key in YouTube Studio and replace it in OBS before streaming again. |
