Then apply the energy rate and billing rules for your home’s state, DISCOM and consumer category. There is no single India-wide household rate or standard OBS wattage that can produce a reliable rupee total for everyone.
Calculate the stream’s monthly energy use
One electricity unit is 1 kWh. The calculation is:
Monthly energy (kWh) = average power (W) Ă— streaming hours per day Ă— streaming days per month Ă· 1,000
This is the standard watts-to-kWh conversion given in a 2021 Kerala State Council of Educational Research and Training physics text: energy in kWh = power in watts Ă— time in hours Ă· 1,000.
Worked example—not a typical OBS wattage
A hypothetical 200 W setup streamed for 5 hours a day on 30 days would use 30 kWh: 200 Ă— 5 Ă— 30 Ă· 1,000 = 30. The 200 W input is only an example for showing the arithmetic; OBS does not have a universal power draw, and this is not a representative wattage for OBS equipment.

Decide which equipment to include
OBS software itself does not determine the electricity use. Count the equipment drawing power during the stream, and make the estimate’s scope explicit.
- PC-only estimate: count the computer running OBS and encoding the stream.
- Complete desk estimate: also count the monitor, speakers, capture devices, lights and any other equipment used for streaming.
For an actual reading, an optional plug-in electricity usage monitor with a cumulative kWh display can track connected equipment over representative sessions. Yantram says its PM10 meter reports instantaneous watts, cumulative kWh and electricity expense: Yantram PM10 product information. Check that any meter you buy is rated for the voltage, current and plug format in your home. Measure multiple devices together only if the meter and electrical arrangement safely support the combined load.

Do not assume a US meter is suitable in India: the University of Indiana utility cooperative’s guide to measuring electricity use describes cumulative kWh readings, but says its referenced Kill-A-Watt monitor cannot be used with 220 V appliances.
Turn kWh into an energy-charge estimate
Multiply the monthly kWh by the marginal energy rate that applies to your household. For example, if your hypothetical 30 kWh stream load fell entirely within a single applicable rate of R rupees per kWh, its energy charge would be 30 Ă— R. Use the rate and slab method on your current bill or the applicable tariff order; do not substitute a rate from another state or consumer category.

The Central Electricity Authority explains that its Financial Studies & Analysis Division prepares an annual tariff and duty publication by analyzing tariff orders from State Electricity Regulatory Commissions and collecting subsidy and electricity-duty information. Its site lists the March 2026 tariff publication. This reflects how tariffs are set and reported; it does not establish one rate for all Indian homes.
A territory-specific example
Lakshadweep’s FY 2026–27 schedule lists domestic energy charges by consumption slab, alongside fixed charges. These are Lakshadweep schedule figures, not an India-wide tariff:

See the Lakshadweep FY 2026–27 electricity tariff order for the schedule and its fixed charges. A household’s added bill may not equal stream kWh multiplied by one listed rate: consumption slabs, fixed charges, subsidies, duties and other adjustments can affect the total. If you want the change to the full household bill rather than an energy-charge estimate, account for the home’s existing consumption and local billing rules.
