For separate 24/7 shows with different video rotations, create a separate queue and encoder output for each show, then connect each output to its matching YouTube broadcast and stream key. In OBS Studio, the documented way to rotate a list of local files is a VLC Video Source with Loop Playlist enabled. A YouTube channel playlist is not an encoder queue, and binding one feed to multiple broadcasts duplicates that same feed rather than creating independent rotations.
Choose the right setup for your streams
YouTube uses two distinct resources: a liveStream describes the incoming audio-video feed and its settings; a liveBroadcast is the viewer-facing event. Google’s Live Streaming API guide explains that a stream can be bound to up to three broadcasts, but that is not a way to create three queues. When one feed is bound to multiple broadcasts, viewers receive the same incoming content on each broadcast.
| Architecture | What viewers see | When it fits | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separate feed and queue for each stream | Each output can play its own rotation. | Different shows, channels, or content that must run independently. | Each queue must be paired with its intended output and YouTube stream key; your computer, encoder, and network must support the workload. |
| One feed bound to multiple broadcasts | The same incoming feed appears on each broadcast. | Publishing one feed as more than one viewer-facing event, such as a 24/7 feed and another broadcast showing that same feed or a subset of it. | It does not provide a different rotation for each broadcast. Google’s API guide documents up to three broadcast bindings for one stream resource. |
If you need independent rotations, use the separate-feed approach. YouTube’s documentation describes separate stream resources as a common approach for simultaneous broadcasts with different content or settings. It does not establish a universal limit on how many independent outputs one OBS computer can sustain.
Build one playlist queue in OBS
Install the VLC dependency
OBS’s official Media Sources documentation says VLC must be installed for the VLC Video Source to be available. For 64-bit OBS, it specifies 64-bit VLC. The VLC source is suited to a list of files: OBS describes it as allowing a playlist, similar to an Image Slideshow. A standard Media Source is for one local file and has its own Loop option.

Add and configure the queue
- In OBS, create a scene for the first destination. Give it a clear name, such as “Stream A.”
- Add a VLC Video Source to that scene and select or add the local media files for that stream’s rotation in the intended order.
- Enable Loop Playlist to restart the queue after the last item. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a predictable sequence; enable it if randomized playback is intended.
- Check the source’s visibility behavior and audio-track settings, particularly if a file has multiple audio tracks or the scene may be hidden.
- Add the overlays and other audio sources needed for this show. Make sure they belong to this scene and output, not another stream’s setup.
Repeat these steps for every distinct rotation. Use explicit source names such as “Stream A — queue” and “Stream B — queue” so that you can distinguish them while managing scenes and outputs. VLC Video Source rotates files selected in OBS; the cited OBS documentation does not describe pasting a YouTube playlist URL into the source to fetch its videos.
Pair each queue with its YouTube broadcast
- For each show, create or select the intended broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Record its channel or account, title, privacy setting, and scheduled status.
- In YouTube’s encoder setup, copy the stream URL and stream key for the corresponding YouTube stream resource. Enter those credentials in the matching OBS output, unless you are using a supported direct YouTube integration.
- Keep a private mapping of output name → OBS queue → channel → stream key → broadcast. Treat stream keys as credentials; do not expose them in screenshots or public instructions.
- Check the current Live Control Room and encoder controls before going live. YouTube distinguishes sending the encoder feed from making the broadcast live to viewers; for scheduled broadcasts, its encoder guidance describes checking the preview and choosing Go live when ready.
For a queue that needs its own independent rotation, assign it to its own feed output and matching stream resource. Do not assume that selecting a different broadcast alone changes the content coming from a shared feed.

Run multiple outputs without mixing them up
The exact way to run several independent outputs depends on the installed OBS version, available output support, encoder hardware, and network capacity. Each independent queue needs to reach the intended independent output, with the right stream settings and key. YouTube’s API model supports separate stream resources for simultaneous shows with different content or settings; it does not prove that a particular computer or account can run an arbitrary number of encodes.
- Check that your OBS setup supports the number of independent outputs you intend to run.
- Account for the encoder workload and the upload bandwidth required by all active outputs. The cited documentation gives no universal capacity figure; measure and validate for your own equipment and connection.
- Verify any current YouTube account or platform limits in Live Control Room before deployment.
- If shows should carry identical content, consider whether one feed bound to multiple broadcasts is appropriate instead of encoding duplicates.
Test every stream before leaving it unattended
Do a short local or unlisted run for each output before making it public. This is a recommended validation step, not a guarantee of unattended reliability.

- Review YouTube’s stream health panel for configuration issues. The LiveStreams API reference exposes stream status and health/configuration issue fields.
- Test how your scheduled broadcast behaves if the encoder disconnects and restarts. Automatic start and stop settings can affect whether a broadcast starts with the encoder or ends when the encoder stops; confirm the controls currently shown in YouTube and OBS.
Archive behavior, rights, and monetization
Do not rely on a multi-day stream for a complete archive
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive behavior threshold, not a recommended maximum broadcast duration. The guidance does not establish that an uninterrupted multi-day stream will produce a complete replay. If replay availability matters, check current YouTube guidance and consider dividing operations into shorter broadcasts.
Use content you are entitled to stream
Looping a file technically does not grant rights to its music, footage, performances, or other material. Use content you created or have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s current channel monetization policies. The policy applies to live streams: highly repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible for YPP monetization, and reused content may require significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. Reused-content review is separate from copyright permission, so permission by itself does not establish monetization eligibility. YouTube’s policy page notes an update dated July 15, 2025; check its current terms rather than assuming a playlist loop will qualify.

Troubleshooting common queue and output problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video Source is missing in OBS. | VLC may not be installed, or the OBS and VLC architectures may not match. | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, as specified in OBS’s Media Sources documentation. |
| The playlist stops at the last item. | Loop Playlist is off. | Open the source settings and enable Loop Playlist. |
| Files play in an unexpected order. | Shuffle Playlist is enabled or the list order is wrong. | Turn shuffle off for a fixed order and review the selected file sequence. |
| The wrong show appears on a broadcast. | A queue, OBS output, stream key, or broadcast has been paired incorrectly—or one feed is bound to multiple broadcasts. | Check the private output-to-queue-to-key mapping and inspect the incoming preview for each broadcast before going public. |
| YouTube does not receive the expected feed. | The encoder may have the wrong stream URL or key, or the feed may have a configuration or health issue. | Confirm the URL and key for that stream resource in YouTube’s current encoder setup and inspect the stream preview and health status. |
| A broadcast does not start or ends after an interruption. | Scheduled-broadcast automatic start/stop settings may affect behavior when an encoder starts or stops. | Review the current OBS and YouTube controls, then test disconnect and restart behavior on a non-public run. |
| Audio is absent or comes from the wrong track. | The VLC source’s audio-track selection, source visibility, or scene composition may be wrong. | Check the source’s audio-track settings, visibility, and the audio sources in the scene; verify the result in the output preview. |
