For continuous viewing, estimate data use from the stream’s average delivered bitrate: Mbps × hours × 0.45 = approximate decimal GB. At a steady 1 Mbps, watching for 24 hours uses about 10.8 GB; at 2.5 Mbps, about 27 GB; at 5 Mbps, about 54 GB. These are calculations, not guaranteed YouTube playback totals: YouTube can adjust quality, and actual use varies with viewing conditions and other network traffic.
Estimate data use by bitrate and viewing time
One megabit per second sustained for an hour transfers about 450 megabytes, or 0.45 decimal gigabytes: 1 Mbps × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 bits per byte. Multiply 0.45 by the average playback bitrate in Mbps and the number of hours watched.

These are arithmetic estimates assuming an unchanged bitrate throughout the viewing period, not measurements of a particular Indian network or YouTube broadcast. For fewer than 24 hours, multiply the hourly figure by the hours actually watched. Decimal GB is used here (1 GB = 1,000 MB); an internet provider’s counter, protocol overhead, and allowance-accounting method can make its displayed total differ.
Why resolution does not give an exact data total
YouTube playback can adapt to viewing conditions, and viewers can change playback quality. Consequently, a stream labelled 1080p does not necessarily deliver one fixed bitrate to every viewer for the entire session. YouTube’s guidance on changing video quality explains that available and selected quality can vary with viewing conditions. Your chosen quality is useful context, but the average delivered bitrate is the better input for estimating usage.

YouTube lists recommended sustained connection speeds of 5 Mbps for HD 1080p, 2.5 Mbps for HD 720p, 1.1 Mbps for SD 480p, and 0.7 Mbps for SD 360p in its playback system requirements. These are recommended connection speeds for playback, not published measurements of data consumed per hour. Treating them as rough bitrate assumptions can help with planning, but it cannot promise an exact usage total.
Do not confuse the creator’s upload with the viewer’s data
A prerecorded livestream still reaches a viewer as a stream, but the creator’s outgoing signal and the viewer’s incoming playback are different sides of the connection. YouTube’s live encoder settings table gives recommended ingest settings for broadcasters—for example, H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, and a minimum of 0.4 Mbps for 360p at 30 fps. These figures help a creator configure the signal sent to YouTube; they do not establish the bitrate delivered to every viewer.

Likewise, YouTube’s mobile live-filming tips give a rule of thumb of about 10 MB per minute for streaming from a mobile device. Applied literally, that is about 600 MB per hour or 14.4 GB in 24 hours—but it describes the person broadcasting from a phone, not a guaranteed viewer-side usage rate for watching a 24/7 prerecorded stream.
How to estimate usage on your own Indian connection
- Choose a representative viewing period. Note how long the stream is watched and whether other devices are using the same mobile-data plan, hotspot, or broadband connection.
- Start with a plausible playback rate. Use one of the table’s bitrate scenarios as a planning estimate, rather than treating an encoder recommendation or resolution label as a viewer measurement.
- Check a device or router data counter. Record the counter before and after a representative session. A counter on the device or router actually carrying the playback is better evidence for your connection than an encoder table. If other traffic shares that connection, isolate the test where practical or account for that traffic separately.
- Scale the observed or estimated hourly use. Multiply the hourly amount by your expected viewing hours. For nonstop viewing over 30 days, multiply the daily amount by 30.
- Leave room in your allowance. Quality changes, other household use, overhead, and differences in provider accounting can raise the total beyond a clean calculation. Keep a margin rather than budgeting to the last gigabyte.
The bitrate arithmetic is the same in India as elsewhere. What matters for your decision is whether the connection is mobile data or fixed broadband, how much allowance remains, and how many hours the stream will play. This estimate does not assume any particular Indian operator’s plan, cap, price, or fair-use policy.
