For a first launch aimed at viewers in India, try starting at 6:30–7:00 p.m. IST. That gives the stream a short lead-in to the 7–10 p.m. India-wide YouTube prime-time window reported by EY and FICCI in 2025. Treat this as a sensible experiment, not a proven universal best time: a continuous stream remains available at other hours, and your channel’s own audience patterns matter more than a national reference.
Why 6:30–7:00 p.m. IST is a reasonable starting point
EY and FICCI’s 2025 report identifies 7–10 p.m. as prime time on YouTube in India by concurrent viewers. Starting around 6:30–7:00 p.m. puts the launch near the beginning of that broad window, giving you a practical time to announce the stream and welcome its first viewers. The report does not establish 6:30 p.m. as an ideal start time, nor does the national figure show what will work for a particular channel, language, or documentary subject.
For a 24/7 stream, the start time is chiefly a decision about launch visibility, promotion, and when you can be present to greet or moderate viewers. It does not limit access to viewers who arrive at other times.
Use your channel’s audience report to refine the time
In YouTube Studio, open Analytics → Audience and look for “When your viewers are on YouTube.” YouTube says this report shows when your viewers have been online across YouTube during the last 28 days and can help you plan a live stream. Treat it as a recent pattern, not a permanent timetable. Check your top geographies too: a channel aimed at Indian viewers may still have a meaningful audience in other time zones.

If the report is unavailable because your channel has too little audience data, use the 7–10 p.m. IST period as a provisional starting window, then collect results. Neither the national prime-time figure nor a particular start time guarantees reach.
Test launch slots fairly
Compare several launches or substantial promotional pushes across different days and times. This is a practical testing method, not a published YouTube experiment. Keep the documentary or playlist, title and thumbnail, and announcement effort as consistent as you reasonably can. Otherwise, a difference in results may reflect the content or promotion rather than the time.

- Audience activity: Use the channel’s 28-day report and top geographies to decide which local hours are worth testing.
- Day and niche: Record the day of the week and the subject or format. Available evidence does not establish a best weekday or a separate ideal time for documentary streams.
- Ability to engage: Consider when you can announce the stream, welcome viewers, or moderate chat. A busy period is more useful if you can support the launch.
- Comparable outcomes: YouTube’s live-stream analytics include concurrent viewers, average concurrent viewers, peak concurrent viewers, average view duration, and total watch time. Compare relevant measures across similar launches rather than judging by raw views alone.
Write down the start time, day, promotion, and results after each test. Use the channel’s own repeated outcomes to adjust the schedule; do not treat one unusually strong or weak launch as conclusive.
Make a continuous stream’s launch useful
Choose a launch period when your intended viewers are more likely to be active and when you can make the stream easy to discover. Schedule any premiere-style announcement or community post for that period, and be available if you plan to interact with viewers. After the initial push, the stream can continue serving people who arrive outside the launch window.
