First identify which frames are being lost: OBS encoding overload or rendering lag points to a local CPU/GPU workload problem; network-dropped frames point to an unstable connection or insufficient upload capacity. Check OBS Statistics and YouTube Live Control Room stream health before changing settings or buying hardware. Then reduce the work OBS must do, consider a compatible hardware encoder if software encoding is the bottleneck, and test the actual stream workflow.
Find out what kind of frames are dropping
OBS and YouTube provide different clues for different failure modes. In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the dropped-frame, rendering-lag, and encoding-lag indicators while streaming. Also check the stream-health and encoder messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Encoding overload or encoding lag: OBS cannot encode the video in time. If you use the x264 software encoder, CPU load is a likely place to investigate.
- Rendering lag: OBS is struggling to compose or render the scene. A busy scene, graphics workload, or constrained GPU can contribute; changing only the stream bitrate may not fix it.
- Network dropped frames or disconnections: the connection to YouTube is unstable, or the upload link cannot sustain the configured bitrate. A faster CPU will not repair that network problem.
OBS describes dropped frames as a connection that is not stable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. OBS stream connection troubleshooting and OBS Statistics explain the indicators. YouTube also recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load when audio or video output is poor (YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream video and audio issues).
Reduce OBS workload before changing hardware
Lower output resolution or frame rate
In OBS, open Settings > Video and test a lower Output (Scaled) Resolution or Common FPS Value. Resolution and frame rate affect how much work the system must do. If 60 fps is not sustainable, test 30 fps; make one change at a time so you can see whether it improves the relevant OBS indicator and the YouTube stream.

Lowering resolution or frame rate trades image detail or motion smoothness for a lighter workload. Choose the best setting your hardware can sustain reliably, rather than assuming the highest available setting is necessary for a continuous documentary stream.
Simplify scenes
Remove sources, filters, browser elements, animations, or scene complexity that the stream does not need. OBS recommends simplifying scenes when performance is constrained. If rendering lag is the issue, scene and graphics workload may matter even when the CPU encoder itself is not overloaded.

Use a compatible hardware encoder when software encoding is confirmed as the bottleneck
OBS hardware encoding shifts video encoding from the CPU to a dedicated component in a supported GPU. NVIDIA GPUs, for example, include NVENC; YouTube notes that it can encode without using the CPU. In Settings > Output, check the encoder selection for your installed OBS version and hardware, then test the output for stability and acceptable image quality. The available encoder labels depend on the system.
This is a conditional fix, not a reason by itself to buy a new graphics card. Confirm that CPU-based software encoding is the problem, and that the candidate GPU and settings support the required encoder. A hardware encoder will not resolve network-dropped frames. See OBS: Hardware Encoding and YouTube: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Match YouTube’s encoder guidance to your stream
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, supports listed frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the matching row in YouTube’s current table instead of copying a number from another mode.
In OBS, review Settings > Output for encoder, rate control, bitrate, and keyframe interval; review Settings > Video for output resolution and frame rate. Compare those values with YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table. Do not raise bitrate to address CPU encoding overload: bitrate is principally an output and upload requirement, and a higher value can worsen network drops.

Measure outbound upload performance, not download speed alone. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate; for example, a stream configured at 6 Mbps calls for roughly 7.2 Mbps of available upload capacity under that guideline. This is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee that a variable connection will remain stable.

If upload capacity fluctuates or is too close to the configured bitrate, lower the bitrate to a sustainable level using the matching YouTube recommendation, test again, and investigate Wi-Fi, local congestion, or the ISP connection if drops continue. OBS notes that an unstable route or insufficient capacity can cause connection-dropped frames. See YouTube’s streaming tips and OBS connection troubleshooting.
Validate the continuous-stream setup, not just a short test
A 24/7 runtime does not by itself identify the cause of frame loss. The official guidance covers encoder performance, stream health, and connectivity, but does not establish a universal CPU percentage, temperature limit, or test duration for a 24/7 YouTube stream.
- Start with the OBS Statistics indicators and YouTube Live Control Room messages to identify encoding, rendering, or network trouble.
- Change one relevant setting at a time: resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, encoder, or network bitrate, depending on the diagnosed issue.
- Test with the actual type of video, motion, and audio you plan to stream; monitor both OBS and YouTube for errors and dropped frames.
- For a continuous channel, observe the setup under representative load for the intended operating period before relying on it. Keep a record of the settings and symptoms so a later change can be compared.
Common symptoms and practical fixes
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports encoding overloaded or encoding lag | Software encoding load or output demands | Reduce output resolution or frame rate; simplify scenes; if CPU software encoding is the bottleneck, test a compatible hardware encoder. |
| OBS reports rendering lag | Scene composition or graphics workload | Simplify scenes and sources; reduce output demands and retest. |
| OBS reports network dropped frames or disconnects | Unstable connection or insufficient upload headroom | Measure upload capacity, allow YouTube’s recommended headroom, lower bitrate if necessary, and investigate the network or ISP. |
| YouTube reports encoder errors or poor output | Encoder configuration, system load, or stream health | Check OBS statistics and encoder settings against YouTube guidance, then run a representative test and monitor stream health. |

Copyright and continuous-play considerations
Technical stability does not establish that you have the right to stream every recording in a playlist. Before putting a documentary, soundtrack, or other material on a continuous YouTube stream, confirm that you have permission or another valid basis to use it and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules. Also assess whether the channel’s programming and presentation meet YouTube’s monetization policies; a stream running continuously is not itself proof of eligibility. Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight aid.
