Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →FFmpeg’s reconnect options are HTTP protocol controls. They can help FFmpeg recover an HTTP(S) input, but they are not a general fix for a YouTube RTMP or RTMPS output disconnect. For a 24/7 broadcast, first identify which part failed—source, ingest connection, FFmpeg process, host, or network—then use a recovery method suited to that failure.
What FFmpeg’s reconnect options do—and what they do not do
FFmpeg documents reconnect and related settings for HTTP connections. YouTube’s encoder workflow sends your program to a YouTube ingest URL using RTMP or RTMPS and a stream key. These are different protocol directions: reading an HTTP source is not the same operation as sending an RTMP(S) output to YouTube.
Use the HTTP flags only when the input that is failing is actually HTTP(S). Do not add them to an RTMP(S) output command and assume they will restore a dropped YouTube connection. The official FFmpeg and YouTube guidance cited here does not establish one universal FFmpeg command that guarantees recovery from every output disconnect.
| Failure | What to inspect | What the HTTP reconnect flags address |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP(S) source disconnects before it ends | Input URL and FFmpeg input-side logs | reconnect can retry after a disconnect before EOF. |
| HTTP(S) source reaches EOF but should be treated as live or endless | Whether the source is expected to continue or become available again | reconnect_at_eof treats EOF as an error and attempts to reconnect. |
| HTTP(S) source is streamed or non-seekable | Input protocol and source behavior | reconnect_streamed permits retries for streamed or non-seekable HTTP inputs. |
| TCP/TLS connection to an HTTP(S) source fails during setup | Connection-establishment errors in the input logs | reconnect_on_network_error covers TCP/TLS errors during connection establishment. |
| HTTP server returns an error response | HTTP status code and whether it is transient | reconnect_on_http_error lets you select retryable codes or categories such as 503, 4xx, or 5xx. |
| YouTube RTMP(S) output disconnects | Output logs, YouTube Live Control Room health, and the network path | These HTTP options do not establish a general RTMP(S) output-recovery policy. |
| FFmpeg exits, the source file ends, or the host loses power or connectivity | Process state, input playlist or file behavior, host, and network | HTTP reconnect flags alone do not restart an exited process or restore a failed host or network. |
Choose the HTTP options for the failure you actually have
These settings are input-side HTTP controls. Place them before the particular HTTP(S) input they govern, and confirm that the input URL really uses HTTP or HTTPS. The example below is a syntax pattern for an HTTP input, not a complete YouTube streaming command:

ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_at_eof 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_on_network_error 1 -reconnect_delay_max 30 -i "https://your-http-source.example/path" ...
Replace the example URL and the ellipsis with your actual source and processing/output arguments. The example deliberately does not claim to reconnect an RTMP(S) output. Enable only options that match the source’s failure behavior; broad retries can hide a persistent source problem rather than solve it.
Retry limits and server instructions
reconnect_delay_maxcaps the retry delay.reconnect_max_retriescaps the number of retries.reconnect_delay_total_maxcaps total retry delay.respect_retry_afterhonors an HTTPRetry-Afterresponse when available.
FFmpeg’s current master HTTP implementation declares defaults of 120 seconds for reconnect_delay_max, -1 (unlimited) for reconnect_max_retries, 256 seconds for reconnect_delay_total_max, and enabled for respect_retry_after. These are implementation defaults, not a promise about every installed release or build. Check your own binary’s documentation or help output before relying on a default. In particular, an unlimited retry-count default does not mean retries continue indefinitely: another retry limit or protocol behavior may stop them.

Configure the YouTube stream separately from input recovery
YouTube’s encoder recommendations govern what you send to ingest; they do not make a connection self-recovering. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP, and recommends choosing settings that your connection can sustain. Its current published H.264 examples include:
| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Those are YouTube-published recommendations for the listed H.264 resolutions and frame rates, not a guarantee that an individual connection can sustain them. Do not apply one row to a different codec or output format without checking YouTube’s matching recommendation.

- Use constant bitrate (CBR) for the encoder output.
- Set a two-second keyframe frequency; YouTube states a maximum interval of four seconds.
- Choose a supported codec and frame rate for the intended output, and test the stream before relying on it.
- Allow upload headroom: YouTube recommends 20% beyond the total stream bitrate. If you run primary and backup encoders simultaneously, account for both streams’ bandwidth plus headroom.
The stream key identifies the YouTube broadcast destination for the encoder. Keep it private, use the ingest URL and key shown for the relevant YouTube stream, and verify the encoder’s output destination rather than confusing it with the HTTP input URL. YouTube’s encoder setup and Live Control Room health messages are the platform-side references for establishing and checking that ingest connection.
Build recovery in layers for a 24/7 broadcast
- Classify the interruption. Check FFmpeg logs and YouTube Live Control Room health messages. Determine whether the HTTP input failed, the RTMP(S) output dropped, the source ended, the FFmpeg process exited, or the host/network became unavailable.
- Apply input retries only to an HTTP(S) source. Select the matching options for disconnects, EOF, streamed input, connection-establishment errors, or retryable HTTP responses. Set delay and retry ceilings deliberately rather than assuming defaults match your recovery needs.
- Design output recovery separately. For an RTMP(S) disconnect, validate the recovery and restart behavior with your installed FFmpeg build and YouTube workflow. A process supervisor can address a process that exits, but restarting a process is not by itself proof that the existing YouTube event will resume as intended.
- Test the complete path before launch. Check the actual player and stream-health status, not only whether FFmpeg prints that it is sending data.
- Test failover deliberately. If you have a backup encoder, stop the primary or disconnect its network and confirm that the backup actually takes over in the player. YouTube recommends testing the full stream and backup behavior.
- Keep a local recording if preservation matters. YouTube says automatic archiving can occur for streams under 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends local recording as a backup. For a 24/7 program, plan local capture and decide whether one continuous event or shorter scheduled events better suit your archive needs.
Common failure symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely distinction to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports HTTP reconnect activity, but the YouTube stream is still offline | The retry may concern the HTTP input, while the output ingest is down. | Inspect output-side errors and YouTube stream health; handle RTMP(S) recovery separately. |
| The source stops at EOF and does not resume | The input may be a finite file or an HTTP source that ended. | Determine whether it should loop, advance to another playlist item, or reconnect as a live HTTP source; reconnect_at_eof is specifically an HTTP behavior, not a general media-file loop setting. |
| Retries stop earlier than expected | A retry count, cumulative delay limit, server response, or build-specific behavior may be controlling the outcome. | Inspect the installed binary’s option help and effective command-line values; check HTTP status and FFmpeg logs. |
| Stream health degrades or YouTube reports ingest trouble | The configured bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the connection may lack headroom. | Use the YouTube recommendation for the chosen codec/resolution/frame rate, measure available upload under operating conditions, and lower output demands if necessary. |
| FFmpeg is no longer running | Input retries do not restart an exited process. | Check the exit logs and host/service supervision; test that any restart resumes the intended YouTube event rather than assuming it does. |
| A full-day broadcast is missing from the YouTube archive | Automatic capture is not assured for streams longer than 12 hours. | Retain a local recording and make the event/archive plan before going live. |
Copyright and reused-content checks for a continuous program
Reconnect reliability does not grant rights to the material being rebroadcast, nor does it determine whether a channel meets YouTube monetization policies. Before putting a documentary, soundtrack, or playlist on a continuous loop, confirm that you own or have permission for the video and audio, including any third-party footage or music. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming rules and monetization policies for your channel and content; technical availability is not a rights clearance or monetization guarantee.
