To stream 4K at 60 frames per second to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, encode for YouTube’s live-ingest settings, send a steady bitrate over RTMP or RTMPS, and verify the complete path before going live. YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 at 2160p60, or 35 Mbps for H.265 or AV1, plus a constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval. For H.264, YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom means planning for about 62.5 Mbps of stable outbound capacity for one stream—not merely a connection advertised at that speed. YouTube’s encoder guidance and network tips do not specify an India-only bitrate or ISP; test from the actual streaming location.
Choose a codec and bitrate
YouTube’s published figures below are live-ingest guidance for 2160p60. The recommended bitrate depends on the codec; do not substitute YouTube’s separate upload-video recommendations for these live-stream figures.
| Codec | 2160p60 minimum | 2160p60 recommended | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps | A familiar option, but it needs the most upload capacity at YouTube’s recommended setting. |
| H.265 (HEVC) | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | Use only if your FFmpeg build and workflow support the encoder and YouTube ingest. |
| AV1 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | YouTube publishes the same 2160p60 bitrate figures as for H.265; encoder availability depends on your build and hardware. |
These are YouTube’s published minimum and recommended live-ingest bitrates, not guarantees of image quality or of your encoder’s ability to produce frames in real time. The platform supports H.264, H.265 and AV1, up to 60 fps. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Check your upload capacity in India
YouTube recommends 20% more upload bandwidth than the stream bitrate. At the H.264 recommendation of 50 Mbps, that is approximately 62.5 Mbps of stable upload for one stream. This is a calculation from YouTube’s headroom recommendation, not a claim about Indian internet speeds. Other devices and traffic use the same connection; a backup stream adds its own bitrate to the load.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Measure outbound upload from the location and connection you will actually stream from. Download speed and an advertised plan rate do not establish stable upload capacity.
- Repeat measurements at the time of day you expect to go live, then run a complete FFmpeg-to-YouTube test. Shared networks can limit the bandwidth available to your stream.
- If the connection cannot sustain the recommended bitrate with headroom, test a lower resolution or frame rate, or a supported codec with a lower recommended bitrate. Confirm the result in YouTube’s stream health and viewer playback.
YouTube Help puts the constraint plainly: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” Read its streaming tips. The cited guidance sets no special India bitrate, ranks no Indian ISPs and does not establish a suitable regional endpoint.
Prepare the YouTube event and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live event and open its stream settings. Copy the stream URL and stream key for your encoder. Follow YouTube’s stream-settings instructions for the current interface.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or leave it exposed in shared logs or shell history. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings.
- Check that your FFmpeg build includes the encoder you plan to use and supports the transport protocol you intend to send. This example requires
libx264and an RTMP-compatible output; use an RTMPS URL if your build and workflow support the secure transport.
Send an SDR H.264 file with FFmpeg
This template reads a video file and encodes it as SDR H.264 for YouTube. Replace input.mp4, the ingest endpoint and the key with your own values. It is a configuration example, not a command verified across every FFmpeg build or operating system. Its scale filter produces 3840×2160 output; use it only if that matches your source and encoding capacity.

Camera, screen or other live capture
Replace the file input with the input options for your operating system and capture device. Do not use -re by default for real-time capture. Device input syntax and available capture methods vary by platform and FFmpeg build, so verify the input separately before adding the YouTube output settings.

H.265 or AV1
Select an encoder that is actually available in your FFmpeg build, and use YouTube’s 35 Mbps recommended target for 2160p60 rather than carrying over the H.264 50 Mbps value. Encoder names, hardware support and rate-control options vary; the H.264 command above is not a drop-in recipe for these codecs.
HDR
The example targets SDR. YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit for SDR and recommends H.265 for HDR. HDR needs an appropriate source, encoder configuration and color signaling; do not apply this SDR template unchanged. YouTube also says 4K streams cannot use its low-latency option and are set to normal latency. Check the current encoder guidance for the platform’s format details.

Test before going live and monitor stream health
- Run a pre-stream test with audio and video movement similar to the real event. A static image alone may not reveal the demands of a more active source.
- Watch FFmpeg’s output for encoder, input, connection or muxing errors. Confirm that frames are being encoded and sent rather than accumulating or falling behind.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for the detected 2160p60 signal and stream-health messages. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during the event.
- Keep a tested lower-resolution or lower-bitrate fallback ready if the uplink cannot sustain the planned stream. Change settings deliberately and confirm the new signal is healthy.
The platform does not prescribe a universal CPU or GPU minimum that guarantees real-time 4K60 encoding. Throughput depends on your source, FFmpeg build, selected encoder and hardware, so an end-to-end test is the meaningful check.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not detect 2160p60: Check the input and output dimensions, frame-rate filter, encoder output and event settings. Confirm the FFmpeg process is sending frames and allow YouTube’s preview time to update.
- Stream health reports insufficient bandwidth or the stream drops: Test stable upload at the streaming location, account for other network traffic and restore the recommended headroom. Reduce bitrate, resolution or frame rate if the connection cannot sustain the target.
- FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder: Your build may not include
libx264or the encoder you selected. Use a build with the required encoder or choose one that the installed build exposes. - Connection or protocol errors: Check the copied ingest URL and key, the output protocol support in your FFmpeg build, and whether your chosen endpoint expects RTMP or RTMPS. Keep the key private while troubleshooting.
- Encoding cannot keep up: Real-time 4K60 performance is hardware- and encoder-dependent. Test the actual source; consider a faster preset, a capable hardware encoder if available, or a lower output resolution or frame rate.
- Aspect ratio or color looks wrong: Avoid forcing non-16:9 material into 3840×2160 without an intentional crop or padding strategy. The example is SDR BT.709; use a separately configured HDR workflow for HDR content.
FFmpeg’s full documentation describes an optional FIFO muxer pattern that can attempt RTMP recovery after a temporary failure. It requires adaptation and testing and is not a guarantee that an outage will be recovered without interruption.
