How to Set Up YouTube RTMP Streaming with FFmpeg for a Video Loop

To stream a local video repeatedly to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, use YouTube Live Control Room’s current stream URL and key, run FFmpeg with real-time input pacing and an indefinite loop, then check the Live Control Room preview before taking the stream public. Prefer RTMPS when your FFmpeg build supports it, and keep the stream key private.

Before you start

  • Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. You can check live-stream setup in YouTube Studio under Create → Go Live. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the current requirements and workflow.
  • Install an FFmpeg build that supports the encoders and network protocol you plan to use. FFmpeg options and available features can vary by build; the online documentation tracks the newest revision.
  • Have a video file accessible to the computer running FFmpeg and enough upload capacity for the selected output bitrate.
  • Use a scheduled stream if you want to inspect the incoming feed in the preview before clicking Go live. Test ahead of any event, with representative picture and audio.

Get the YouTube stream URL and key

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
  2. Create an encoder stream or open a scheduled stream from the Manage tab.
  3. In the stream settings, copy the displayed Stream URL and Stream key. Use the pair shown for that stream; do not assume a destination path or use a placeholder value.
  4. To use RTMPS, open the lock-icon option in Live Control Room and copy the RTMPS URL shown there. The default displayed destination may be ordinary RTMP. YouTube recommends RTMPS to protect the feed in transit. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

The stream key functions like a password for the encoder feed. Do not include it in a public post, screenshot, or shared command. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the key in your FFmpeg command.

Run FFmpeg to loop the video

This illustrative command reads loop.mp4 at real-time speed, loops the input indefinitely, encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, and sends an FLV-muxed feed to the destination. Replace the file path, server URL, and key with the values for your stream.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "loop.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
  -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY"

This is an illustrative, untested example, not a guarantee for every FFmpeg build, source file, or YouTube ingest endpoint. Check that your build supports the selected encoders and RTMPS protocol, and use the exact destination format shown in Live Control Room. FFmpeg’s command documentation explains option placement; its protocol documentation covers RTMP and RTMPS.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What the options do

  • -re belongs before the input file. It paces file reading at a real-time rate instead of letting FFmpeg process the file as quickly as the computer can.
  • -stream_loop -1 requests an indefinite loop of the input. Check your installed FFmpeg’s local help output if the option is unavailable or behaves differently in your build.
  • -i "loop.mp4" identifies the input file. Use a valid path; quote paths containing spaces.
  • -c:v libx264 selects H.264 video encoding, and -c:a aac selects AAC audio. YouTube lists H.264 and AAC among its live encoder settings.
  • -f flv explicitly selects the FLV output muxer used with the RTMP-family destination in this command pattern.
  • -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP. That equals a two-second keyframe interval only at 30 fps; use a GOP appropriate to the actual output frame rate.
  • -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize set video bitrate and rate-control buffer values. The sample values are a starting illustration, not a universal YouTube recommendation.

Choose settings that fit the source and connection

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with a recommendation not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate guidance varies with resolution and frame rate, so select settings for the intended output and verify that your upload connection can sustain them.

  • Resolution and frame rate: Match the output to the source and the quality you need. Higher resolution and frame rate require more bandwidth. Do not choose a bitrate based only on the example command.
  • Keyframes: Set GOP size from the output frame rate. At 30 fps, 60 frames is two seconds; at 60 fps, 120 frames is two seconds.
  • Audio: The example assumes the file has an audio stream. Inspect the input first. If it has no audio, adjust the command by omitting audio encoding or by supplying an intentional audio input; do not assume every silent-source setup will be accepted identically.
  • Upload capacity: Test the connection under conditions similar to the planned stream. If YouTube reports unstable health or dropped data, reduce bitrate or resolution and check the platform’s current recommendations.

Check the preview and start the broadcast

  1. Run the FFmpeg command and confirm it continues sending data without a connection or encoder error.
  2. Open the stream in Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. Check the picture and audio, then review the stream-health indicator.
  3. For a scheduled stream, click Go live in Live Control Room once the preview and health look right. A running FFmpeg process sends the feed; it does not by itself complete YouTube’s scheduled-stream go-live action.
  4. When finished, stop the outgoing FFmpeg feed and select End Stream in Live Control Room where applicable. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No preview appears The encoder is not sending, the stream URL and key do not belong together, or the endpoint or protocol is wrong. Confirm FFmpeg is still running and sending data. Copy the URL and key from the same stream in Live Control Room. Check whether you selected RTMP or RTMPS and whether your local FFmpeg build supports it.
TLS or connection error The RTMPS endpoint may be wrong, or the connection may be blocked or unsupported. Copy the RTMPS endpoint shown through the lock-icon option rather than guessing it. YouTube notes that port 443 may help when an otherwise correct URL produces an SSL error; follow the endpoint and connection guidance shown for your stream.
FFmpeg rejects an option or encoder Your installed build may not include the requested encoder, protocol, or option. Check the local FFmpeg help and build configuration. Use a build that supports the needed components, or adjust the command to available options.
Audio is missing or the command fails on audio The input may have no audio stream, or its audio format may need different handling. Inspect the file’s streams and change audio mapping or encoding accordingly. For a source with no audio, omit audio encoding or add a deliberate audio input.
Stream health is poor or data drops The selected bitrate may exceed reliable upload capacity, or the output settings may not suit the connection. Test upload capacity, lower the bitrate or resolution as needed, and monitor Live Control Room’s stream-health feedback against YouTube’s current encoder recommendations.
The stream key may have been exposed Anyone with the key may be able to send an encoder feed to the stream. Reset the key in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg with the replacement. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers stream-key management.

Copyright and repeat-play considerations

FFmpeg can repeat a file, but it does not grant the right to broadcast its contents. Use video and audio you created or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies before running a continuous loop. Repeating the same material is a technical choice, not a guarantee of eligibility for monetization or protection from claims.
