For a dependable 24/7 YouTube Live broadcast, start with RTMPS, H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), progressive video, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Choose resolution and frame rate to match both the material and the upload bandwidth you can sustain, with about 20% upload headroom. YouTube does not specify one universal profile for every continuous stream, and a broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be archived by YouTube.
A practical starting profile
For a comparatively low-motion scene, 1080p at 30 fps is a reasonable starting point if the encoder and network can sustain the recommended bitrate. That is a practical choice based on YouTube’s general encoder guidance, not a special YouTube preset or guarantee for 24/7 broadcasts. For fast motion or when finer detail matters, consider 1080p60 or higher—but account for the extra encoding load and bandwidth.
| Setting | Recommended starting choice | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Use a different supported protocol only when your encoder workflow calls for it. |
| Video codec | H.264 | A broadly usable choice. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest; use the matching codec-specific bitrate guidance. |
| Rate control | CBR | Constant bitrate is YouTube’s recommended rate-control approach. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Scan and pixels | Progressive; square pixels | Use progressive video and square pixels. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps | Match the source and the motion needs; higher frame rates require more bandwidth and encoding capacity. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 | YouTube’s advanced guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo at 44.1 kHz and 384 Kbps for 5.1 at 48 kHz. |
| Color | Rec. 709 for SDR | Use the SDR color-space guidance when the program is standard dynamic range. |
YouTube’s encoder settings page automatically detects resolution and frame rate by default. Manual selection requires a custom stream key with manual settings enabled, so avoid overriding detection unless you have a specific operational reason.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together
YouTube publishes separate minimum and recommended incoming video bitrates by resolution, frame rate, and codec. These are platform configuration recommendations, not guaranteed quality levels or mandatory settings for every program. Values below are in Mbps.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 | 12 | 6 | 17 |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 | 10 | 5 | 14 |
| 720p at 60 fps | 2 | 6 | 3 | 8 |
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 | 6 | 3 | 8 |

| 2160p at 60 fps | 10 | 35 | 14 | 50 |
| 2160p at 30 fps | 8 | 30 | 11 | 42 |
For example, YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists 1080p30 H.264 at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; for 1080p60 H.264 it lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. For 1080p30 AV1/H.265, it lists 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended. These figures are YouTube’s technical configuration guidance, accessed in 2026; that is not a publication date for the help page.
Do not choose a resolution solely because the source file has it. A stable 720p stream can be more useful than a higher-resolution feed that repeatedly drops frames. Conversely, a network capable of sustaining the relevant recommended bitrate can support a higher-detail profile when the program benefits from it.

Check sustained upload capacity before going live
Measure the outbound upload available to the encoder, not just the download speed shown by a speed test. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving about 20% room. If you use a backup feed, account for the primary feed, backup feed, and that headroom together. Other people and devices sharing the connection can reduce what is actually available during the broadcast.
- Pick the codec and video profile. Use the matching row in YouTube’s bitrate guidance; include audio in your total bitrate planning.
- Measure the broadcast connection. Test the same network and location that will carry the stream, at a time and under conditions representative of normal use.
- Leave capacity in reserve. Keep roughly 20% upload headroom rather than setting the stream at the connection’s maximum measured upload rate.
- Test representative material. Include the real kind of audio and motion the stream will carry, then inspect YouTube’s stream health messages and the actual player.
YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. Dedicated hardware is optional; YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but its general live guidance does not require special hardware for continuous streaming.

RTMPS or HLS?
For a standard RTMP-compatible encoder workflow, use RTMPS. YouTube describes it as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” HLS is a supported alternative for particular encoder and codec workflows, including HDR use cases, but it is not a general reliability upgrade for a 24/7 stream.
| Protocol | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | Standard RTMP-compatible workflows; YouTube’s recommended default. | Requires an encoder that supports the protocol and the appropriate YouTube ingest configuration. |
| HLS | A supported encoder or codec workflow that specifically needs it, including relevant HDR use cases. | Higher latency because video is sent in segments. YouTube’s documented requirements include TS segments 1–4 seconds long, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. |
Plan for archives and DVR beyond 12 hours
A stream can remain live even when its replay behavior is uncertain. YouTube says it can automatically archive a stream that is less than 12 hours, but “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” DVR, which lets viewers pause and rewind a live broadcast, may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. This is an archive and playback caveat, not an encoder bitrate limit.

- If a complete recording matters, make a local recording while the stream is live and verify that the file is growing.
- If viewers need usable replays, plan a separate way to publish shorter archive segments rather than relying on one uninterrupted day-long YouTube replay.
- Check that recordings can be accessed as intended through the channel, watch page, and mobile devices.
Test the full operation, not just the encoder settings
Settings cannot guarantee continuous uptime. Before relying on a continuous broadcast, check the feed, the network, the backup path if used, and the recording workflow.
- Send representative audio and video to YouTube and review stream health messages.
- Confirm the player shows the expected picture and sound, including on the devices your audience is likely to use.
- For a backup feed, test failover: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet, then verify that the player rolls over to the backup.
- Check that any local archive is being written and that its audio and video are usable.
Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health reports instability or the feed drops | Insufficient sustained upload capacity, a shared or fluctuating connection, or bitrate set too close to the available maximum. | Measure the actual outbound connection, reduce the profile or bitrate if needed, and preserve about 20% headroom. Retest on the broadcast network. |
| Video appears soft or loses detail | The selected resolution, frame rate, codec, or bitrate may not suit the content. | Compare the profile with YouTube’s codec-specific recommendations and test representative motion. Raise resolution or bitrate only if the encoder and sustained connection can support it. |
| Motion looks uneven or frames are missed | The encoder may be under load, or the chosen frame rate may exceed the available encoding or network capacity. | Test at a lower frame rate or resolution, check encoder load, and compare stream health before returning to a more demanding profile. |
| Viewers cannot rewind far enough, or no full replay appears | The broadcast exceeded 12 hours; YouTube may limit DVR or may not capture the stream at all. | Use a local recording for a complete copy and publish shorter segments separately if replay is important. |
| Backup does not take over as expected | The failover configuration may not work as assumed. | Test by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet and verify that the player rolls over before relying on the backup. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your 24/7 channel plays uploaded recordings rather than a camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
