A good speed-test result does not prove that OBS can sustain its configured bitrate all the way to YouTube’s ingest server. First identify which OBS counter is rising: network-dropped frames, rendering lag, or encoding lag. Each points to a different problem, so changing encoder settings before checking the counter can waste time—or reduce quality without fixing the cause.
First identify what OBS means by “dropped frames”
OBS tracks distinct kinds of streaming problems. Check the Statistics window while streaming or running a test, and note which counter increases. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, describes dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is not stable or an inability to keep up with the set bitrate.
- Dropped frames (network): OBS cannot reliably deliver the configured stream data to the server. Investigate the bitrate and connection path.
- Frames missed due to rendering lag: OBS is not rendering frames in time. Look at GPU or scene workload, not just the internet connection.
- Skipped frames due to encoding lag: OBS’s encoder is not completing frames on time. Reduce encoding or system workload.
These counters describe different failure points. A choppy viewer experience does not by itself tell you which one is responsible; use the counter and YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages together.
Check YouTube’s ingest settings against your stream
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations are for sending a live stream to YouTube, not for encoding a video upload. The guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. Advanced settings listed include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. The exact labels available in OBS can vary with encoder and software version; set the corresponding option where available.

For H.264, YouTube currently recommends these bitrate values by resolution and frame rate. They are platform recommendations, not measurements of your connection and not a guarantee against dropped frames. YouTube’s page does not display a publication year; figures below reflect its guidance accessed October 3, 2026.
| Codec | Output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
YouTube gives separate bitrate recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. Do not apply an H.264 value to another codec: compare the row for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s current encoder guidance.

Lower bitrate to fit stable upload capacity
A speed test is a snapshot, and its result does not establish the stable capacity of the full route to YouTube’s ingest server during your broadcast. OBS’s connection guide suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when setting bitrate. Treat this as a troubleshooting heuristic, not a universal safe limit: available upload capacity can vary, and the stream still has to reach the platform reliably.

- Note the codec, output resolution, frame rate, and current bitrate in OBS.
- Compare that combination with YouTube’s recommendation for the same codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- If network-dropped frames continue, lower the video bitrate and run a representative test. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether the counter improves.
- Keep testing at the settings and workload you plan to use; a brief speed test alone is not a substitute.
If your configured bitrate is already modest relative to the platform recommendation and drops persist, the connection route may be unstable rather than simply too slow. A wired Ethernet connection is worth trying when Wi-Fi is unstable. OBS also identifies VPNs, security software, network-optimization utilities, drivers, and network hardware as possible factors to investigate. Change or disable security-related software only with care, and restore protections after a controlled test.

Do not change resolution without recalculating the target
Lowering output resolution or frame rate can make a lower bitrate more practical, but it changes the picture viewers receive. Choose a resolution and frame rate for the content, then use YouTube’s matching recommendation as a reference and test whether the bitrate remains stable. For example, a 720p30 H.264 stream has a different recommended bitrate from 1080p60 H.264; those values are not interchangeable.
If rendering or encoding lag is rising
When the network counter is not the one climbing, a lower network bitrate may not solve the stutter. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance, published June 12, 2021, points to reducing the work required to render or encode the stream.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate: Fewer pixels or frames can reduce rendering and encoding demand. The trade-off is lower image detail or motion smoothness.
- Cap a game’s frame rate: A game using nearly all available system resources can leave OBS without enough headroom.
- Simplify demanding scenes: Temporarily remove or disable resource-intensive sources and effects to see whether the rendering or encoding counter settles.
Test each change against the counter that was rising. These steps address local workload; they do not improve an unstable route to YouTube.
Run a representative test before the real broadcast
YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and status messages in Live Control Room. A static screen may not expose problems that appear during a moving, layered, or audio-heavy broadcast.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Use the intended scene, sources, audio, resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate.
- Watch OBS Statistics for the specific counter that was previously increasing.
- Check Live Control Room for stream health and any status messages at the same time.
- If you change a setting, repeat the test with the same representative content before deciding that the issue is fixed.
Settings and symptoms that are easy to misread
Speed-test upload is not the stream’s guaranteed capacity
The speed-test figure does not prove that the path to YouTube remains stable or that the stream can sustain its selected bitrate throughout a broadcast. The OBS network counter and Live Control Room health are more relevant for diagnosing the live path.

Latency is viewer delay, not a network-drop repair
YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between capture and playback. Its guidance warns that lower latency may mean more playback buffering. The cited guidance does not identify a low-latency setting as a fix for OBS network-dropped frames, so do not change latency settings expecting them to repair an unstable ingest connection.
Do not assume a copyright or reused-content issue from a dropped-frame counter
Encoder and connection counters diagnose delivery or local performance; they do not establish whether content complies with YouTube’s copyright or monetization rules. Check YouTube’s applicable policies separately when content rights or reused material are in question. A technically healthy stream is not, by itself, a policy clearance.

| What you see | Likely area to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Network-dropped frames rise, while rendering and encoding counters do not | Bitrate stability or the route to YouTube | Lower bitrate, test by Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unstable, and investigate VPN, security, network utility, driver, or hardware factors. |
| Frames missed due to rendering lag rise | Scene or system rendering workload | Reduce output resolution or frame rate, cap game frame rate, and simplify resource-intensive scenes or sources. |
| Skipped frames due to encoding lag rise | Encoder or system workload | Reduce output resolution or frame rate and simplify the workload; confirm whether the encoding counter improves. |
| OBS counters look stable but Live Control Room reports a problem | Stream health or a platform-side status message | Read the current Live Control Room message and run another representative test before changing unrelated OBS settings. |
| Drops appear only during busy scenes or active gameplay | Workload changes during the actual stream | Test with similar movement and audio, then reduce local workload or bitrate according to the counter that rises. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does OBS’s 75% upload-speed suggestion guarantee that frames will not drop?
No. OBS presents it as a starting-point heuristic; it cannot guarantee a stable route to YouTube or account for changing upload capacity.
Should I use a two-second or four-second keyframe interval?
YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
Will switching to low latency fix network-dropped frames?
The cited YouTube guidance does not say that it will. Latency concerns capture-to-playback delay and can affect buffering.
