Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR), use a two-second keyframe interval, and leave upload capacity beyond the stream’s total bitrate. These are YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations, not its separate recommendations for uploaded videos.
Recommended YouTube settings for 1080p30
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, gives different bitrate recommendations depending on the video codec. Choose the row matching the codec your encoder actually sends.
| Setting | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1920 Ă— 1080 at 30 fps |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 |
| Video bitrate | H.264: 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps listed minimum. AV1 or H.265/HEVC: 10 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps listed minimum. |
| Bitrate mode | CBR (constant bitrate) |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS recommended; RTMP is also listed |
| Audio codec and bitrate | AAC or MP3; 128 kbps recommended for stereo audio |
| SDR color space | Rec. 709 |
| Pixel aspect and scan | Square pixels; progressive scan |
These are YouTube’s settings for live encoder ingest, not a controlled comparison of codec image quality or hardware performance. Use a codec your encoder and production workflow support; do not apply H.264’s 14 Mbps recommendation to AV1 or H.265, or confuse live settings with upload-video encoding guidance. YouTube’s live encoder settings lists the codec-specific values.
How to apply the settings
Set the encoder output
- Choose 1080p and 30 fps. Set the output resolution to 1920 Ă— 1080 and frame rate to 30 fps. If you choose a different resolution or frame rate, the 1080p30 bitrate recommendations above no longer describe that output.
- Select the video codec and matching bitrate. For H.264, set 14 Mbps as the recommended target; for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, use 10 Mbps. The listed minimums are lower bounds, not the recommended targets.
- Use CBR. Set bitrate control to constant bitrate so the outgoing stream follows a steady target.
- Set keyframes to every 2 seconds. Do not set an interval above 4 seconds. YouTube’s encoder table explicitly recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four. YouTube Help: encoder settings
- Configure audio. Select AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube recommends 128 kbps.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends the secure RTMPS protocol; RTMP is also listed.
- Check video format details. For SDR, use Rec. 709 color space, square pixels, and progressive scan.
Choose YouTube’s resolution handling
YouTube’s default recommendation is to let the platform detect resolution and frame rate. If you need to set these manually in Live Control Room, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution. The exact controls available can depend on the encoder and YouTube’s current interface. YouTube Help’s encoder setup guidance

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How much upload speed do you need?
Your available outbound upload capacity must carry the stream’s total bitrate, including audio, with headroom for network variation and other traffic. YouTube advises leaving about 20% headroom. As a practical calculation, divide the total outgoing bitrate by 0.8 to estimate the capacity to reserve; for example, a 14 Mbps video stream alone implies about 17.5 Mbps of available upload capacity before accounting for audio or other network use. This is a planning margin, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming or a universal internet-speed requirement.
- Check upload bandwidth at the location and time you plan to stream.
- Account for the full stream bitrate and any simultaneous uploads or devices sharing the connection.
- Choose a quality that fits the connection reliably rather than relying on a one-time speed-test result.
- A shared or unstable connection can still disrupt a stream even when a speed test appears adequate.
YouTube recommends checking outbound bandwidth, rehearsing, and monitoring stream health and its warnings while live. Test with audio and movement similar to the planned program; a test can reveal problems but cannot promise a trouble-free broadcast. YouTube Help and YouTube streaming tips

Latency and DVR: choose for the audience
Latency is the delay between capture by the camera or encoder and playback for viewers. Lower latency may increase playback buffering, so the right choice depends on the program rather than a universal best setting.
- Prioritize faster response when viewers need to interact with the host in near real time.
- Consider a less aggressive latency choice when interaction is not important and stable playback matters more.
- Enable DVR when useful so viewers can pause, rewind, and resume the live stream.
YouTube describes these trade-offs but does not prescribe one latency or DVR configuration for every event. YouTube Help: latency and DVR

Preflight checklist for a 1080p30 broadcast
- Confirm the encoder is sending 1080p at 30 fps and the intended codec.
- Match video bitrate to codec: H.264 at 14 Mbps recommended, or AV1/H.265 at 10 Mbps recommended.
- Verify CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, never above four seconds.
- Check audio codec, stereo bitrate, SDR color space, pixel format, and scan mode.
- Verify outbound upload capacity with headroom, including audio and network use by other devices.
- Run a rehearsal with representative audio and motion; watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages.
- Decide whether audience interaction calls for lower latency and whether viewers should have DVR controls.
An encoder can be software or a standalone hardware unit. YouTube identifies encoder streaming as useful for screen sharing, gameplay, external audio/video equipment, and advanced productions; its guidance does not mean you need to buy a hardware encoder for a 1080p30 stream. YouTube reports an unstable stream
Check whether upload capacity is sufficient for the total bitrate with headroom, whether other devices are consuming bandwidth, and whether the connection is shared or unreliable. Repeat the test and rehearsal under conditions closer to the live event; a speed test alone cannot guarantee stability. YouTube streaming tips

The stream looks poor despite using the recommended bitrate
First confirm the actual outgoing codec and resolution. The recommended bitrate differs by codec: 14 Mbps for H.264 versus 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 1080p30. Also check that the source itself is 1080p30 and that the encoder is not sending a different format. The recommendation is a live-ingest setting, not a promise of a particular visual result.
Manual resolution controls are unavailable or do not behave as expected
YouTube’s default is automatic resolution and frame-rate detection. For manual resolution settings, its guidance calls for a custom stream key and enabling manual settings under Stream Resolution in Live Control Room. If that path differs in your account, consult YouTube’s current control-room interface and encoder documentation rather than assuming every setup exposes identical controls.

Viewers report buffering or interaction feels delayed
These can reflect the latency choice and connection conditions. Lower latency can make interaction faster but may increase buffering; reassess the balance for the event. DVR separately allows viewers to pause, rewind, and resume.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the broadcast is a pre-recorded program you want to keep looping on YouTube, StreamNeo can run it from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It streams uploaded video to YouTube, not live camera footage. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
