To loop a prerecorded store promotion on YouTube Live, enable looping in an encoder such as OBS—not in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio, send the video to it using the stream URL and key, check the preview, then start the live broadcast. The steps below cover a local-computer setup and a cloud alternative.
What YouTube Studio controls—and what the encoder controls
YouTube Live Control Room creates or schedules the broadcast and provides the stream URL and stream key. The encoder plays and loops your promotion, then sends its audio and video to YouTube. OBS Studio is one software option; YouTube also supports hardware encoders. For a basic local-file loop, OBS is sufficient—special hardware is not established as necessary.
In OBS, a Media Source can loop a video file. For a playlist, OBS also offers a VLC Video source with a Loop Playlist option, but VLC must be installed. The loop setting is off by default for Media Source.
Set up the YouTube broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, open Manage to schedule a broadcast in advance, or use Stream to create or start one immediately. Scheduling is useful when you want the stream to appear as upcoming so viewers can opt into notifications; it does not start the encoder for you.
- Set the title, description, audience, and privacy. Choose public, private, or unlisted deliberately. An unlisted broadcast is useful for a rehearsal before the public stream.
- Review the broadcast options that matter to your event: monetization and rights controls, whether DVR is enabled so viewers can pause or rewind, and whether auto-start or auto-stop should let encoder actions start or stop the broadcast. Availability and labels may vary in Studio.
Configure OBS to play the promotion on a loop
- In OBS, create or select a scene, then add a Media Source.
- Select the locally stored promotion file and enable Loop in the source properties. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM as supported formats. If the file will not load, check its format and whether it plays locally.
- Check that the video fills the intended canvas without unwanted cropping or empty space. Confirm that the promotion’s audio is audible and routed to the stream. Watch the transition from the end of the video back to the beginning; a hard cut may be noticeable if the footage or soundtrack does not join smoothly.
- For a playlist instead of a single file, add a VLC Video source, choose the playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to work.
Connect OBS to YouTube and choose encoder settings
- In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. In OBS streaming settings, enter those values, or choose YouTube if OBS offers a YouTube service preset. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Choose a resolution and bitrate the computer and upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends the following video bitrates for H.264:

These are YouTube’s published ingestion recommendations, not a promise that a particular network can sustain the selected rate. The guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for your actual format. YouTube transcodes incoming video for different playback formats, so select a stable input quality rather than pushing a rate your connection cannot hold.

- Rate control: use CBR (constant bitrate), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Protocol: use RTMPS, which YouTube recommends.
- Audio: use AAC or MP3.
Encoder controls and setting names can differ by version. The specific bitrate figures above are for H.264 at the stated frame rates; do not apply them automatically to another codec, resolution, or frame rate.
Test, go live, and monitor the loop
- For a scheduled broadcast, start OBS at least 15 minutes before the event, as YouTube recommends. An unlisted test broadcast is a practical way to rehearse without making the stream public.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the stream preview. Check the framing, picture, audio, and stream health indicators. Confirm the video reaches its end and loops back as intended. YouTube recommends testing with both audio and movement.
- When the preview is correct, click Go live for a scheduled broadcast unless the broadcast’s auto-start setting is configured to start it from the encoder. For an immediate stream, follow the on-screen state in Live Control Room.
- Monitor OBS and Live Control Room during the promotion. If stream health deteriorates, reduce the output bitrate or resolution to a level the upload connection can sustain, then check the preview and health again.
- When finished, click End Stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer broadcast will be archived.

Clear rights before broadcasting a store promotion
Make sure the channel has permission to use both the promotion’s visuals and its soundtrack in a livestream. A video being available to download or use in a store does not, by itself, establish livestream rights. YouTube’s monetization and rights controls are separate broadcast settings; selecting an option in Studio does not establish that you own or have permission to use the material.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The video plays once and stops: open the Media Source properties and turn on Loop. For a VLC playlist, check Loop Playlist.
- OBS does not play the file: confirm it plays locally and use a format OBS supports, such as MP4, MOV, MKV, or WebM. If using a VLC Video source, install VLC.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: check the stream URL and key in OBS, confirm the encoder is running, and verify that the correct broadcast is open in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- The preview is missing or stream health is poor: allow time for the encoder connection, check YouTube’s health indicator, and lower the bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the selected settings.
- The picture is cropped or audio is absent: correct the source fit in the OBS canvas and verify that the file’s audio is enabled and reaching the stream mix. Check both in the YouTube preview before going public.
- The scheduled broadcast does not start when OBS connects: check whether auto-start is enabled. Otherwise, wait for the preview and click Go live in Live Control Room.
