For a fixed devotional video or playlist, a Linux VPS running headless FFmpeg is usually the simplest do-it-yourself setup: it can loop prerecorded media and send it to YouTube without a desktop session. Choose the server according to whether FFmpeg will copy compatible media or encode it, and check monthly outbound transfer as carefully as CPU and RAM. Use OBS on a desktop-enabled VPS when you need scenes or GUI controls. These are configuration recommendations, not tested VPS rankings or uptime guarantees.
Choose the setup that fits your devotional stream
| Option | Best fit | Main tradeoff | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo, managed cloud service | Keeping uploaded prerecorded videos or playlists live on YouTube without administering a server | Less server-level control; check service terms and plan limits | Output quality, recovery, storage, support and destination |
| FFmpeg on a Linux VPS | A fixed prerecorded video or playlist and command-line operation | Requires setup, maintenance and monitoring | Codec compatibility, CPU, transfer allowance, restart behavior and stream health |
| OBS on a desktop VPS | Scenes, visual transitions or GUI-based operation | Needs a desktop environment and remote access; may use more resources | CPU or GPU allocation, remote desktop, transfer allowance and monitoring |
For a continuous devotional program made from prerecorded material, start with FFmpeg unless you need OBS’s scene workflow. A provider calls FFmpeg efficient, but that is provider guidance, not an independently measured comparison. If server administration is not desirable, the managed option is a different tradeoff: less control in exchange for less VPS maintenance.
Size the VPS around encoding and transfer
CPU and memory are starting estimates, not guarantees
Space-Node’s 2026 sizing guide gives the following examples. They are vendor-published estimates, not independently validated minimum requirements; the actual workload, codec, bitrate and VPS CPU affect resource use.
| Example workload | CPU | RAM | Listed upload speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 480p FFmpeg loop | 1 core | 1 GB | 2 Mbps |
| 720p FFmpeg loop | 2 cores | 2 GB | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p FFmpeg loop | 2 cores | 4 GB | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p OBS software encoding | 4 cores | 4 GB | 10 Mbps |
If your file already matches the intended delivery format and can be copied rather than re-encoded, server workload differs from live transcoding. Pre-encoding locally may reduce server-side work, but the sources available here do not establish a controlled performance saving. Test your chosen file and VPS rather than treating a resource table as a promise.

Estimate monthly outbound traffic
Continuous streaming uses egress for the entire time the stream is publishing. Space-Node estimates approximately 1 TB per month for a 1080p stream at 2500 kbps; treat that as a vendor estimate and an order of magnitude, not a universal allowance. Estimate your own transfer from the stream’s total bitrate and hours online, then leave headroom for audio, protocol overhead and any other server traffic. A high port speed describes possible throughput, not necessarily included monthly data.
Provider-published examples illustrate why the quota matters: Hostinap lists a German plan at $12/month with 1 vCPU, 4 GB ECC RAM, 60 GB NVMe and an unmetered 1 Gbit port; it also lists a German plan at $20/month with 2 vCPU and 8 GB RAM. Its US $5/month example lists 2 vCPU, 3 GB RAM and 3 TB transfer. These are volatile provider offers, not endorsements or performance tests; confirm current price, availability, transfer terms and fair-use limits directly. “Unmetered” does not by itself establish unconstrained sustained performance.

Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. For 720p30, YouTube lists a video bitrate range of 2–6 Mbps and a total bitrate range of 3–8 Mbps. Check YouTube’s current guidance and the settings shown for your stream before publishing, because platform requirements can change. The selected video bitrate is not the whole traffic calculation: include audio when estimating total bitrate and transfer.
Use the secure ingest endpoint shown in YouTube Live Control Room when your encoder supports it. Do not treat an older provider RTMP example as the definitive current endpoint. Keep the stream key secret; anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to your channel.

Set up a looping FFmpeg stream on Linux
This example loops one local file and encodes H.264 video with AAC audio. It is a command pattern, not a guarantee that every file, FFmpeg build or YouTube stream configuration will work unchanged. Replace the endpoint and key with the values YouTube provides, use the currently supported secure ingest address where available, and adjust bitrate and resolution for your target.
- Prepare the VPS. Choose a Linux VPS with adequate sustained CPU, memory and monthly outbound transfer for the intended workload. Install FFmpeg using the package method supported by your distribution, and place the prepared devotional video at a stable path such as
/path/to/video.mp4. - Create or configure the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the ingest URL and stream key for the stream. Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots, logs and source control. Restrict access to any file that contains it.
- Check the media and encoder. Confirm FFmpeg can read the file and that the video and audio settings are compatible with the intended YouTube output. A 2500 kbps video target and 128 kbps AAC audio are the values in Space-Node’s example, not universal settings. YouTube’s 720p30 guidance gives its own bitrate range; select settings for your actual resolution and frame rate.
- Start the loop. Substitute the ingest endpoint and secret key. Do not paste the stream key into a public-facing page or share the completed command.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 2500k -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv 'rtmps://YOUR-CURRENT-INGEST-ENDPOINT/YOUR-STREAM-KEY'
The example’s codec and bitrate are illustrative. Verify that the video resolution and frame rate match your plan, choose YouTube-compatible keyframe and bitrate settings, and use the exact ingest address required by YouTube and your encoder. If you change the command to copy rather than encode streams, first confirm the input codecs and stream parameters are suitable for the destination.

Keep FFmpeg running and detect failures
Use a service manager for restart and reboot recovery
A detached tmux session can keep a command attached to a shell session after you disconnect, but it is not a substitute for a service manager when you want automatic restart after a crash or server reboot. Space-Node’s guide demonstrates a systemd service with Restart=always and a ten-second restart delay. Configure the service to run as a restricted user, protect the stream key, and inspect service logs after starting it. Confirm it starts after a VPS reboot instead of assuming that a successful first launch covers reboot recovery.
Monitor the output, not just the process
A process can remain active while ingest has failed or the output has frozen. Check YouTube Live Control Room for incoming video and stream health, and arrange an independent alert or periodic check for a missing or stalled output. A process supervisor can restart FFmpeg after a process failure; it cannot by itself prove viewers are receiving a working stream.

When OBS makes more sense
Choose OBS on a desktop-enabled VPS when the devotional broadcast needs composed scenes, visual transitions or GUI controls. The VPS needs a desktop environment and remote access for setup and operation. Space-Node’s example for 1080p OBS software encoding lists 4 cores, 4 GB RAM and 10 Mbps upload, versus its 1080p FFmpeg example of 2 cores, 4 GB RAM and 8 Mbps. Those figures are provider estimates, not a controlled comparison; actual requirements depend on settings, workload and the specific server. For one static video or audio playlist, a headless FFmpeg loop avoids maintaining the extra GUI layer.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive a stream: Confirm the ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room, check that the key was not mistyped or revoked, and verify outbound connectivity and the encoder’s error log. Use the currently supported secure endpoint.
- The stream starts but drops under load: Check sustained CPU use, encoder settings and network stability. If the server is encoding, reduce the workload or choose a VPS with more suitable resources; a nominal port speed alone does not establish reliable sustained output.
- Traffic allowance runs out: Recalculate egress using the total bitrate and continuous runtime, then compare it with the provider’s monthly quota and fair-use policy. Choose a plan with adequate headroom.
- FFmpeg stops after disconnecting or reboot: Run it under a service manager configured for restart, and verify restart behavior after both a process failure and a VPS reboot. A terminal session alone does not provide full recovery.
- The process is running but the broadcast is absent or frozen: Check YouTube’s incoming stream status and the output itself. Add stream-health monitoring; a running FFmpeg process is not confirmation of successful ingest.
- The video or audio is rejected or appears incorrectly: Check source codecs, output encoding, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder guidance, then review FFmpeg’s logs.

A devotional subject does not automatically make music, recordings, images or performances free to rebroadcast. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and check the rights for both audio and video. YouTube may enforce copyright claims or other restrictions even when a stream is continuously available. Also consider whether a channel built around repeated prerecorded content meets YouTube’s current monetization and reused-content rules; those are separate from whether an encoder successfully sends a signal. Review YouTube’s applicable policies and resolve rights questions before running a long broadcast.
