You can run an internet radio station on YouTube by sending a continuous audio-and-video feed from an encoder to YouTube Live Control Room. The encoder can run on a computer or standalone hardware; it must stay powered, connected, and monitored if you operate it locally. YouTube’s help guidance explains how to start and configure an encoder stream, but it does not guarantee that one broadcast can run indefinitely, stay uninterrupted, or be archived in full.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible for live streaming. Your channel must have had no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
- An encoder: software on a computer or a standalone hardware encoder.
- A prepared audio program and a visual feed. Even a station that is audio-first needs a video signal for YouTube Live.
- Reliable upload bandwidth, with capacity beyond the combined bitrate of your stream feeds.
- The necessary rights for all music and other material in the broadcast, including the relevant territories and uses.
- A plan for monitoring, outages, restarts, and any archive you need to preserve.
Choose how to keep the station running
Run an encoder on a computer
This is the direct do-it-yourself route if you have a computer available. Install an encoder such as OBS, prepare the station’s audio and visual output, and keep the computer, encoder, and internet connection running. YouTube also supports standalone hardware encoders; its help pages list verified encoder options but note that those products are not made by YouTube. Check the encoder’s own documentation for its ability to run unattended and recover from local failures.
Use an encoder service in the cloud
A cloud service can remove the need to leave a home computer on, but check what it actually supports: whether it plays uploaded recordings or accepts a live input, what output and quality it provides, how it handles interruptions, and what its price includes. For a YouTube station built from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast a camera feed or stream to other platforms.
Set up a local encoder stream
- Enable live streaming. Sign in to the channel, verify it if needed, and confirm that live streaming is available. If this is the channel’s first activation, allow up to 24 hours for enablement. Confirm that there are no live-stream restrictions from the preceding 90 days.
- Clear the program’s rights. Before scheduling or starting the station, confirm that your rights cover the actual live broadcast, the intended territories, and any archive or replay you plan to keep. A purchase, subscription, or “royalty-free” label alone does not establish those permissions.
- Create an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream for an encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the stream settings. YouTube describes this workflow in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
- Protect the stream key. Paste the URL and key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset or replace it in the stream settings and update the encoder.
- Choose an ingestion protocol supported by your encoder. YouTube identifies RTMPS as a recommended secure ingestion option. HLS is another option for supported encoders, including OBS, but YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. HLS is not required for a simple radio-style stream; use the protocol your encoder supports and configure both ends to match.
- Configure the encoder. Follow YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio as specified in its guidance. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Choose video resolution and bitrate based on the visual feed, your encoder, and your stable upload capacity; do not raise bitrate beyond what your connection can sustain.
- Start privately or test before relying on the stream. Send representative audio and video, check the Live Control Room preview, and verify the watch page on desktop and mobile. Listen for clipping, silence, gaps, and unwanted source audio; inspect the visual feed and stream health as well.
- Measure upload capacity and leave headroom. YouTube recommends allowing 20% beyond the total bitrate, including primary and backup streams if you use them. Its streaming tips advise testing the actual setup rather than assuming a speed-test result guarantees stable transmission.
- Schedule an operator and recovery plan. Arrange who will notice silence, encoder crashes, network failure, or a policy interruption, and how they will respond. Keep access to the encoder and stream settings available. The YouTube guidance does not promise automatic recovery from every outage.
- Plan for archives and restarts. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise that a longer continuous station will archive completely, so do not treat one uninterrupted broadcast as a guaranteed permanent recording. If a complete archive matters, arrange a separate recording and verify it.
Music rights and live-stream interruptions
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the broadcaster for having the necessary rights to live content, including music licensing rights, on Google services throughout the world. The actual permission you have depends on your agreements and the rights involved; this is not jurisdiction-specific legal advice.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: if a rights holder has licensed the material, YouTube advises asking that owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A match can still interrupt the stream when the channel is not allowlisted. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and confirm the process with the rights holder before broadcasting.
- Check that permissions cover live streaming on YouTube, the territories where viewers may watch, and any archived or replayed version you intend to make available.
- Ask the rights holder whether your specific channel must be allowlisted in Content ID and confirm the allowlisting is in place before going live.
- Do not assume public-domain, purchased, subscription, or royalty-free material is automatically cleared for this use; verify the applicable license terms.
What 24/7 operation really means
“24/7” describes the intended schedule, not a YouTube guarantee of perpetual runtime or uninterrupted service. A locally encoded station also depends on the computer, encoder, power, and connection continuing to work. YouTube recommends monitoring the stream and testing the setup; its documentation reviewed here does not promise that every failure will recover automatically.

Build your operating plan around the failure points you can control: keep the encoder and source material ready, monitor the stream and playback, assign someone to respond to alerts or silence, and decide how the station should restart after an interruption. If your priority is continuous playback without leaving a computer at home running, a cloud service changes that operating requirement, but it does not remove YouTube’s platform rules or your responsibility for music rights.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder cannot connect | Incorrect stream URL or key, a changed key, or a protocol mismatch | Re-copy the URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm the encoder uses the selected protocol, and replace the key in the encoder if you reset it. |
| Live streaming is unavailable | The channel is not verified, has a recent restriction, or first-time activation is still pending | Check channel verification and eligibility. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours; the eligibility guidance requires no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. |
| Viewers hear dropouts or the stream disconnects | Upload capacity is unstable or insufficient for the configured bitrate and any backup feed | Test the connection while the encoder is sending, lower the bitrate if necessary, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. |
| The preview is blank or the audio is silent | The encoder is sending the wrong source, the audio path is muted, or the output is not configured as expected | Check the encoder’s selected audio and video sources, confirm the stream is active in Live Control Room, and test the watch page with representative content. |
| The stream is interrupted by a copyright notice | YouTube detected third-party material, or the channel is not allowlisted by the rights holder | Review the notice, contact the rights holder, verify that the license covers the use, and ask about channel allowlisting. Do not assume a license alone prevents a Content ID interruption. |
| A long broadcast is missing from archives | The stream exceeded YouTube’s stated automatic-archive duration | YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; maintain a separate recording if you need a complete copy of a longer station broadcast. |
