You can run a YouTube stream without OBS by using another compatible encoder and feeding it YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. The right setup depends on what “gaming video” means: live gameplay must be captured and encoded continuously, while prerecorded gaming footage can be sent from a cloud service without keeping a local encoder on. Those are different workflows, and a 24/7 broadcast needs its own plan for power, network reliability, monitoring and archiving.
First decide: live gameplay or prerecorded gaming video?
For live gameplay
A game has to run somewhere, and a device or service must capture and encode its output continuously. YouTube does not run the game for you. Replacing OBS means choosing another compatible software or hardware encoder—not eliminating the need for a continuous gameplay source. YouTube describes encoders as useful for gameplay and overlays, and its directory lists software and hardware options; check each encoder’s current documentation to confirm it supports your input and YouTube streaming workflow. YouTube’s encoder directory and setup guidance notes that listed products are not made by YouTube.
For prerecorded gaming footage
A cloud streaming service can send uploaded video to YouTube without a local computer encoding it all day. YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a tool for streaming prerecorded videos 24/7. That listing is not evidence that Gyre captures live gameplay, and the directory alone does not establish its current pricing, outage recovery, playlist behavior or rights features. Verify those details with the provider before choosing it.
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The person livestreaming must be at least 16 years old. Review YouTube’s live streaming eligibility and restrictions before configuring an encoder; eligibility is separate from whether your encoder and network are ready.

Set up a non-OBS encoder for live gameplay
- Choose an encoder for the actual source. Use YouTube’s encoder directory as a starting point, then confirm current compatibility with your game capture method, operating system or hardware input, and intended resolution and frame rate. A capture card only supplies a video input; it does not by itself replace the encoder or keep the game running.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. The exact labels may change, so follow the current YouTube interface for the stream setup.
- Copy the ingest details into the encoder. Use the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube in the encoder’s corresponding server/URL and key fields. Treat the stream key like a password: someone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube explains key handling in its stream key management guidance.
- Match the video and audio settings to YouTube’s recommendations. Select a protocol and codec supported by both YouTube and your encoder, configure bitrate and frame rate, and use constant bitrate. Recommended values are in the next section.
- Start a test transmission and inspect it in Live Control Room. Check the preview and stream health while the encoder is sending representative gameplay and audio. Do not wait until the channel is relying on the stream before checking for dropped frames, audio problems or unstable upload.
Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. These are ingestion recommendations, not a promise that every encoder supports every combination or that a particular bitrate guarantees image quality. Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain rather than selecting the largest number by default. YouTube advises that “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” Its streaming tips recommend leaving about 20% upload capacity beyond the total stream bitrate. For example, a 17 Mbps video bitrate needs more than 17 Mbps of stable upload capacity once audio and operating headroom are considered; a connection that only reaches that figure in a speed test is not a safe 24/7 margin.

Plan for continuous operation and interruptions
With a local live-gameplay setup, the game source, encoder, power and internet connection all need to keep working. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing with realistic movement and audio, checking the preview and monitoring stream health. For a longer-running setup, backup power or a secondary internet connection can reduce single points of failure, but these are practical resilience measures, not YouTube requirements or guarantees of uninterrupted streaming.
- Run a representative test before the planned broadcast, not just a brief static screen check.
- Monitor the Live Control Room preview and health indicators after going live, especially after changing bitrate or resolution.
- Keep the stream key private; if exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder.
- Decide how the game source will be restarted if the game or capture process freezes; an encoder cannot stream gameplay that is no longer being produced.
Account for YouTube archives and copyright
Do not assume a 24-hour stream becomes one complete archive
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That limit means you should not rely on one 24-hour broadcast producing one complete automatic archive; plan separately if you need a full-day recording. Check the current YouTube encoder setup and archive guidance before scheduling long broadcasts.

Use footage and audio you have rights to stream
Use gameplay, music, cutscenes and other material only when you have the necessary rights or permission, and follow YouTube’s applicable copyright rules. A stream being prerecorded or continuously looped does not itself grant permission to broadcast its contents. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and the applicable live-stream rules before putting a long-running channel on air.

Can a prerecorded video loop replace a live gameplay stream?
It can provide a 24/7 gaming-video broadcast, but it is prerecorded footage, not a live game. Choose based on which kind of stream you intend to run.
