To reduce CPU use in a 24/7 Indian music stream, first find out whether OBS is overloaded while encoding or composing the scene. Then simplify sources and effects, lower frame rate or output resolution if encoding still lags, and adjust the encoder only after checking the bottleneck. Dropped frames can instead point to an unstable upload connection, so diagnose that separately.
Diagnose what is actually using resources
Before changing settings, capture a baseline during a representative stream or test. In OBS, note the selected encoder, output resolution and frame rate, CPU use, rendering and encoding lag indicators, and dropped frames. Also check YouTube’s stream health and messages. A CPU-heavy encode, overloaded scene rendering, and network trouble require different fixes.
- Encoding overload: OBS cannot encode frames on time. If the encoder is x264, it uses the CPU to encode video.
- Rendering load: OBS has to compose the scene from its sources and effects. Complex scenes can use significant system resources.
- Connection trouble: Dropped frames accompanied by a yellow or red connection status can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. That is not, by itself, proof of CPU overload. See the OBS Help Portal.
Keep the OBS and YouTube indicators distinct: a stream may have encoding lag, rendering lag, dropped frames, or more than one problem at once.
Reduce scene rendering work
A music stream with static artwork or a restrained visualizer may not need a complicated scene. OBS notes that sources can consume resources and that some continue to do so while hidden. Simplify the scene before considering a hardware purchase.

- Remove sources you do not need, including hidden sources that are still active.
- Reduce the number and size of browser sources, and remove animated overlays that do not add useful information.
- Use an image source for static artwork rather than a browser-based element where practical.
- Use video and image assets sized appropriately for the output instead of unnecessarily large media.
- Disable or remove filters and effects that are not essential to the stream.

Lower the amount of video work if encoding is still overloaded
If OBS continues to report encoding overload after scene changes, lower the output frame rate or resolution and test again. Fewer frames mean less work to render and encode. OBS specifically suggests dropping from 60 fps to 30 fps when 60 fps is not working. For a music stream, decide whether 60 fps contributes anything meaningful to the visuals before spending resources to maintain it.

- Try 30 fps if you are currently outputting at 60 fps and performance is insufficient.
- If the problem persists, try a lower output resolution and compare the stream’s appearance and OBS indicators.
- Consider reducing the base canvas resolution only if more targeted changes are not enough; it can require reworking how sources fit in the scene.
Test each adjustment with the actual artwork, visualizer, transitions, and other motion used in the live scene. A static background and a busy audio visualizer do not create the same workload.
Choose an encoder and x264 preset deliberately
If you are using x264
x264 encodes on the CPU. A faster preset uses less CPU but is less compression-efficient, so maintaining similar visual quality may require more bitrate. The right trade-off depends on resolution, frame rate, visual motion, and available upload capacity. Do not increase bitrate automatically: the connection and YouTube’s recommended settings still matter.

OBS gives example starting points for its veryfast preset with low-to-medium motion: 720p30 at 3,000–5,000 kbps and 1080p30 at 5,000–8,000 kbps. These are OBS examples, not universal targets. For YouTube, use its current codec-specific recommendations as the starting point and test the actual stream. See OBS’s x264 guide.
If a hardware encoder is available
Check the encoder choices OBS offers for your installed GPU or integrated graphics. A compatible hardware encoder may be worth testing when CPU encoding is the measured bottleneck, but availability and results depend on the system and encoder. The evidence does not establish that this particular stream needs a new graphics card. Compare CPU use, image quality at the chosen bitrate, GPU headroom for OBS’s scene, and reliability during a representative test before changing hardware.

Set YouTube output to match the codec and connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Select the bitrate recommendation for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use—not a number from a different codec column.

These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that an individual upload connection—Indian or otherwise—can sustain the selected bitrate continuously. YouTube’s settings page provides codec- and resolution-specific guidance, including minimum and recommended values: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Test before relying on a continuous broadcast
- Use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, scene, and representative motion planned for the stream.
- Run a test long enough to see typical system and network behavior, rather than judging from a short idle period.
- Watch OBS’s encoding and rendering indicators, dropped-frame count, connection status, and YouTube stream health together.
- If encoding or rendering is the problem, return to the relevant scene, frame-rate, resolution, or encoder adjustments. If connection warnings and dropped frames appear, investigate upload stability and whether the set bitrate is sustainable.
YouTube’s instruction is simple: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Testing is especially important for a 24/7 schedule: one successful short session does not establish that a specific ISP, power supply, or computer will remain reliable around the clock.
Check music rights and channel rules separately
Lower CPU use does not grant permission to broadcast music. Before using Indian music, devotional recordings, film songs, or other tracks, verify that you have the necessary rights for the recording and composition and that your planned use complies with YouTube’s policies. Encoder settings cannot prevent a rights claim or establish whether a channel meets YouTube’s monetization rules for reused content.
