YouTube’s published guidance does not promise one complete archive for a continuous 24/7 broadcast. It says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a dependable archive, plan shorter sessions and keep a local recording; YouTube does not document a specific pattern for splitting a long stream into parts.
What YouTube’s 12-hour guidance means
YouTube Help’s Archive live streams page says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and cautions: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The 12-hour stream limit is a warning about capture, not a published rule explaining exactly how YouTube divides a long broadcast. YouTube does not state that every 24/7 stream will be split in the same way, or that every session under 12 hours is guaranteed an archive.
So, if your 24/7 kirtan stream appears as multiple archives, the visible parts alone do not establish what caused each boundary. Check the actual runtime of each session and whether the stream or encoder was stopped and restarted. YouTube’s general duration guidance does not diagnose an individual channel or say that a particular encoder causes archives to split.
How to check the parts already on your channel
- In YouTube Studio, go to Content → Live.
- Inspect the archive entries for the stream, including their details, visibility, and runtimes where shown. YouTube’s archive guidance also describes changing an archive’s visibility or deleting it from this area.
- Compare the archive boundaries with the stream’s actual runtime and any operator or encoder history. A restart may explain a boundary, but confirm it in your own records rather than assuming the cause.
Plan future streams for more dependable archives
End and restart sessions before 12 hours
If you need YouTube archives, schedule deliberate sessions that stay under 12 hours instead of relying on one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast to produce a complete recording. This is a practical way to work within YouTube’s published guidance, not a guarantee that every shorter session will archive successfully. Plan the handoff so viewers know when one session ends and the next begins.

Record a local backup
YouTube Help recommends: “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.” For an encoder workflow, its live encoder instructions advise checking that the local archive file is growing. Verify the recording during the broadcast and confirm that the finished file is usable. Storage needs depend on your stream’s resolution, bitrate, codec, and how long you keep recordings; YouTube does not prescribe a drive size.
Do not confuse archive capture with DVR
An archive is the recording viewers can watch after a stream; DVR controls whether live viewers can pause or rewind during the broadcast. YouTube’s DVR guidance says rewind capability may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If viewers cannot rewind while the kirtan is live, check the DVR setting separately. Disabling DVR does not prevent viewers from seeing the full recording once it is available.

Troubleshooting archive problems
- An archive seems to end early or a long broadcast has no complete recording: Check its runtime and compare it with the 12-hour guidance. Keep a local recording for future sessions; YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all.
- You see multiple archive entries: Compare their runtimes with operator and encoder records for stops or restarts. YouTube’s public guidance does not specify why a particular stream appears in parts.
- The local backup is missing or incomplete: Check the encoder’s recording destination and verify during the next stream that the file is growing, as YouTube’s creator tips advise.
- Viewers cannot pause or rewind live: Review DVR settings and YouTube’s separate long-stream DVR limitation; this is not the same as archive availability.
