Choose OBS if you need to compose scenes, manage sources, and see stream status through a visual interface; choose FFmpeg if a scripted command-line media pipeline fits your setup. Neither choice is proven to run longer or guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 streaming. Whichever you use, match YouTube’s ingest settings, test with representative ASMR audio and motion, and monitor stream health while live.

This is a workflow choice, not a demonstrated reliability contest. Prefer OBS when visual scene composition, source management, and operational visibility matter. Consider FFmpeg when you already manage media through scripts and can validate and supervise that deployment. The available sources do not provide a controlled comparison of endurance, recovery, resource use, or archive behavior, so they do not support naming a reliability winner.
Set a YouTube-compatible stream baseline
YouTube accepts RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. Its API documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL; the guide, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC, says the protocol uses port 443 and requires a valid endpoint and application path. The encoder must implement TLS/SNI correctly for the selected endpoint. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
Video codec, frame rate, and bitrate
YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps. Use a codec supported by your chosen encoder and stream configuration. Its H.264 recommendations include 3 Mbps for 720p30 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30; these are starting recommendations, not ASMR-specific targets or guarantees of uninterrupted delivery. Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Choose a quality your upload connection can reliably sustain. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Rate control and keyframes
Use constant bitrate (CBR) and set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Confirm how your chosen encoder expresses keyframe interval: some settings use seconds, while others may use frames. If using frames, derive the value from the frame rate so the interval remains two seconds.
Stereo audio for ASMR
For stereo, YouTube lists AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz, and 128 kbps in its advanced audio recommendations. These platform settings do not guarantee that quiet details, stereo placement, or the overall sound will be perceived as intended. Listen to a representative test on the live output before committing to a long stream.

Configure and validate your chosen workflow
With OBS
- In YouTube Studio, set up the live event and copy its stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it. In OBS, select YouTube as the service and enter the key in the stream settings; interface labels can vary by OBS version.
- Build the scenes and sources needed for the ASMR program, then set the output to a YouTube-supported codec, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate appropriate to the chosen resolution, frame rate, and available upload connection.
- Configure stereo audio with a supported AAC or MP3 encoder, using YouTube’s 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps recommendations as a baseline. Check input levels and listen for clipping, noise, dropouts, or an unintended channel balance.
- Enable and review OBS’s documented reconnect controls, including retry count and initial retry interval. They can help configure behavior after a disconnect; they are not a promise that OBS or YouTube will restore every stream.
- Run a test with the actual audio and the kind of movement planned for the live program. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages, and look at OBS’s dropped-frame reporting. Adjust the bitrate or output settings if the connection cannot sustain the chosen configuration.

With FFmpeg
FFmpeg is a reasonable option when you are comfortable building and supervising a command-line pipeline. The sources cited here do not establish a single correct FFmpeg command for every operating system, build, input format, codec, and YouTube endpoint; a command copied without those details could encode the wrong stream or fail to connect. Configure your FFmpeg input, video and audio encoders, rate control, keyframes, and RTMP/RTMPS output for the actual host and stream, then validate the emitted stream against the YouTube baseline above.

- Set the output codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR target, and two-second keyframe interval, along with the stereo audio format and settings you intend to use.
- Use YouTube’s current ingest endpoint and application path and the event’s stream key. Keep the key out of public scripts, logs, and shared repositories.
- Test the exact command with representative audio and movement. Verify that the stream reaches YouTube, that the received quality is as intended, and that the connection remains stable at the selected bitrate.
- Plan how the command will be supervised and restarted on your host, and how you will notice an interruption. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal FFmpeg reconnection recipe or prove it recovers more reliably than OBS.
Monitor the stream and troubleshoot problems
YouTube recommends testing representative audio and video motion, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Use those indicators alongside your encoder’s own output; a successful start alone does not establish that a long-running stream will remain uninterrupted.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check the stream key, ingest endpoint, application path, and selected protocol. For RTMPS, verify the encoder’s TLS/SNI support and the connection to the documented endpoint.
- Stream health reports delivery trouble or frames are dropping: Check the actual upload connection and reduce the bitrate, resolution, or frame rate to a configuration the connection can sustain. YouTube advises selecting quality reliable for the available upload connection.
- Video arrives but the ASMR audio is wrong or absent: Verify the selected audio source, channel routing, supported AAC or MP3 encoding, and stereo output. Listen to a representative live test rather than relying on encoder settings alone.
- The stream disconnects: Inspect YouTube’s messages and the encoder’s logs or status. OBS offers reconnect settings, but recovery is not assured; with FFmpeg, recovery depends on the actual command and supervision setup. Confirm that the stream has resumed before assuming the channel is live again.
- A stream ends and archive behavior matters: The sources cited here do not establish what happens to archived replay after every interruption. Do not assume a particular archive outcome; check the applicable YouTube guidance for the specific event.
