You can run a continuous church stream from a Linux VPS with OBS if the VPS provides the graphics and display environment OBS needs and has enough encoding and network capacity for your actual production. A VPS is not automatically OBS-compatible just because it has Linux, a certain number of CPU cores, or ample RAM. Check the host first, configure YouTube’s current encoder settings, and test the complete stream before relying on it for unattended use.
What a 24/7 VPS stream requires
The stream path is OBS on the VPS sending video directly to the streaming service’s ingest endpoint. OBS says its connection goes directly to the service, rather than through OBS-operated streaming servers. For YouTube, you need the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
For Linux, OBS lists OpenGL 3.3 and an X window system or Wayland as requirements. CPU needs depend on the encoder, output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. These are baseline requirements, not a guarantee that a particular virtual machine can encode your church production reliably. OBS cautions that meeting its system requirements does not guarantee streaming or recording performance (OBS system requirements).
Check the graphics and display setup before choosing a VPS
Ask the provider whether the Linux guest can provide OpenGL 3.3 and an X or Wayland session usable by the OBS process. A conventional small, headless VPS may not provide the display stack OBS expects. You may need to provision a virtual display or desktop, or choose a host with suitable graphics support; there is no universal virtual-display recipe established for every distribution and VPS.

OBS lists Flatpak and Ubuntu among its project-maintained Linux installation options. Confirm that the chosen installation and display approach work on the specific distribution and provider before committing to a continuous broadcast (OBS Linux installation guidance).
Size for the real production, not the product label
Estimate capacity using the scenes, filters, audio, encoder, resolution, and frame rate you will actually use. Then load-test that configuration. Do not infer suitability from advertised CPU or RAM alone; OBS notes that requirements vary with workload and that basic compatibility is not a performance guarantee.
Configure YouTube and OBS
1. Enable live streaming and create the broadcast

If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable live streaming in YouTube in advance. YouTube says initial activation can take up to 24 hours (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming).

In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream, then copy its server URL and stream key into OBS. Confirm the broadcast’s privacy, schedule, and lifecycle settings in YouTube Studio. For a scheduled stream, YouTube may show a preview that an operator must review before clicking “Go live.”

Treat the stream key like a password. Do not include it in a public tutorial, screenshot, repository, or shell history. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS with the new key.
2. Set OBS output for YouTube
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for your chosen resolution and frame rate. Its RTMP/RTMPS recommendations include H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Match the bitrate to the capacity and stability of the VPS’s sustained outbound connection, not merely its advertised peak speed. YouTube recommends testing before going live (YouTube encoder settings and bitrates).
OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide a starting profile, but check its results against YouTube’s current requirements and the VPS’s capacity. Platform settings can change, so consult YouTube’s encoder page when configuring or revising the broadcast.
3. Test with representative audio and motion
Run a private or otherwise appropriate test using audio and visual movement similar to the actual church stream. Check YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame counter. OBS identifies dropped frames as a connection-stability or unsustainable-bitrate issue, rather than simply an indication that the encoder needs a higher setting. Its troubleshooting guidance suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed as a diagnostic bitrate ceiling, then lowering bitrate or trying a different ingest server if drops continue. This is a starting point for diagnosis, not a universal guarantee (OBS stream connection troubleshooting).

Make the stream genuinely continuous
A stream that starts successfully is not yet an unattended 24/7 operation. Check the failure modes that could interrupt your particular VPS and broadcast, then verify your recovery approach on that system.
Plan for process, host, and platform interruptions

Check what happens if OBS exits or the VPS reboots, and verify any process supervision and restart behavior you choose.

Keep logs and alerting that let an operator distinguish an OBS failure, network interruption, stream-key change, or YouTube-side lifecycle change.

Confirm that video and audio sources remain active rather than becoming stale or silent during a long run.

Write an operator runbook for checking stream health and restoring the broadcast. Test it rather than assuming a service manager, watchdog, or restart policy will recover every failure.
OBS and YouTube’s cited documentation do not certify one universal unattended Linux setup or guarantee automatic recovery for a self-hosted OBS process. Validate the chosen distribution, display session, and recovery controls on the VPS you will use.
Handle archives separately for a stream over 12 hours
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24/7 stream exceeds that period, so do not assume YouTube will create one complete automatic archive of the whole broadcast. If the church needs a full recording, arrange separate recording and archive handling (YouTube Help: Archive live streams).

Graphics and display: Can the guest system provide OpenGL 3.3 and an X or Wayland session usable by OBS?

Encoding headroom: Can the selected encoder handle the actual resolution, frame rate, scenes, and filters?

Stable outbound capacity: Can the VPS sustain the selected bitrate with margin, on a stable route to YouTube’s ingest?

Continuity controls: Have restart behavior, logs, monitoring, and alerts been verified in practice?

Recording needs: Does the church need an archive covering more than 12 hours, requiring separate recording and storage planning?
Common problems and practical fixes
