How to Use FFmpeg to Loop Lofi Tracks in a YouTube Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop lofi music on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, send a local audio-and-video file to YouTube’s live ingest endpoint, repeat the file on the input side, and pace file playback in real time. You’ll need FFmpeg, a video file with the lofi audio (or separate audio and video inputs), and the stream URL and key for a YouTube live event. The command below is a starting template, not a tested or universal profile: check the options supported by your FFmpeg build, adjust the video settings to your source and upload capacity, and test before relying on it.

What you need before starting

  • FFmpeg: Install a build that can read your media and encode the selected output codecs. In a terminal, check the build with ffmpeg -version.
  • A continuous video source: YouTube Live needs video as well as audio. The simplest example below uses one MP4 containing both a visual and the lofi track.
  • A YouTube live event: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an event. Copy its stream URL and stream key for the encoder.
  • A stable upload connection: Leave headroom above the stream’s total bitrate; a connection that cannot sustain the outgoing rate can cause buffering or dropped frames.

FFmpeg options apply according to their position in the command: input options go before the relevant -i, while output options go before the output destination. In particular, place the repeat option before the input it should loop.

Loop a lofi video file and send it to YouTube

Check the loop option in your FFmpeg build

The common input-loop option is -stream_loop -1, where -1 requests indefinite repetition. Because option availability and behavior can vary by build, confirm it on the machine you will use with ffmpeg -h full before starting. If the installed build does not recognize it, update or use a build that documents the option rather than assuming the command will work.

Set the event’s stream URL and key

In Live Control Room, copy the event’s current stream URL and key. In the command template, replace rtmp://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY with the destination formed from those event details, using the exact ingest information YouTube displays. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the command.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Run an illustrative starting command

This example expects a local file named lofi_visual_with_audio.mp4 containing both video and audio. It loops that file, reads it at its native rate for real-time delivery, explicitly selects its first video and audio streams, and encodes an RTMP/FLV output:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i lofi_visual_with_audio.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmp://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY"

The sample video bitrate, frame rate, encoder preset, GOP settings and output format are not a universal YouTube profile. Adjust them for the actual resolution and frame rate, encoder support, and available upload capacity, and follow YouTube’s current guidance for the chosen live format. The example uses AAC audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz; YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends those settings for stereo audio sent over RTMP/RTMPS.

Understand real-time pacing

-re reads a file at its native rate; FFmpeg describes it as equivalent to -readrate 1. That pacing is useful when a local file is being sent as a live feed. Do not apply a low read rate to an input that is already a live capture or stream: slowing an already-live source can cause packet loss.

Use separate audio and visual files

If the music and visual are separate inputs, add each as its own input and explicitly map the intended video and audio streams. Put each input-specific loop option before the corresponding -i. For example, the command structure is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i visual.mp4
  -stream_loop -1 -i lofi_audio.ext
  -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0

  -f flv "rtmp://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY"

The bracketed text is explanatory, not a command to paste. Add output options appropriate to the visual’s resolution, frame rate and the current YouTube recommendations. Do not assume mismatched input durations or loop boundaries will work without intervention: an input that ends, incompatible codecs, timestamps, or filter behavior can stop the output or produce errors. Test the exact combination on your installed FFmpeg version; there is no single generic shortest/filter setting that is safe for every pair of files.

Test, start and monitor the broadcast

  1. Run a representative test first. Use the intended audio, visual, resolution and frame rate. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  2. Start FFmpeg and inspect its output. Confirm it is reading the expected streams and continuing to send packets rather than exiting with an error.
  3. Check Live Control Room. Wait for the incoming preview and health information. Confirm the picture is continuous and the audio is present before starting the event if it is not configured to start automatically.
  4. Monitor stream health while live. YouTube’s dashboard can report issues such as incorrect format or codec, bitrate, and keyframe frequency. Correct reported settings rather than assuming a connected encoder means a healthy stream.

YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a longer broadcast will have a complete archive. If preserving the entire show matters, check YouTube’s current policy and consider recording locally or using segmented events.

Common problems and fixes

  • “Unrecognized option” for the loop flag: Check ffmpeg -h full on the exact installed build. Use a build that documents the input-loop option, and keep it before the input’s -i.
  • The broadcast ends when the file ends: Confirm the loop option is applied to the intended input and positioned before that input’s -i. If using separate files, check each input’s loop configuration and whether a filter or duration condition is ending the output.
  • Video appears but there is no music, or vice versa: Inspect the input streams with FFmpeg and correct the -map values. The sample assumes video and audio are the first matching streams in one file; separate inputs need different map indexes.
  • YouTube reports a codec, bitrate or keyframe issue: Compare the dashboard message with the current YouTube encoder guidance. Adjust the output codec and rate-control settings, then retest. The sample’s bitrate and GOP values are starting points, not guarantees.
  • Video or audio stutters: Check whether the upload connection can sustain the combined video and audio bitrate, lower the video bitrate or resolution if needed, and avoid using -re on an already-live input.
  • The key is rejected or the feed does not arrive: Verify that the URL and key belong to the selected event and were copied exactly. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value.
  • The stream is live but the loop has a gap or abrupt change: Inspect the source file’s beginning and end and test repeated playback before going live. A loop option repeats a file; it does not guarantee a seamless musical transition.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations

Looping a track does not grant permission to broadcast it. Use music and visuals you created, licensed for this use, or otherwise have the rights to stream. A track permitted for personal listening or an ordinary upload may not include rights for continuous public livestreaming; check the license terms and keep evidence of permission. YouTube’s copyright enforcement and monetization decisions are separate from whether FFmpeg can send the stream. Reusing the same recording repeatedly also does not itself establish eligibility for monetization; review YouTube’s current channel and monetization policies before building a channel around looping material.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the YouTube stream to continue without keeping FFmpeg running on a home computer, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. The workflow is: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not go live from a camera.
