To stream a slideshow continuously to YouTube from a VPS, generate slideshow frames on the server, send them through an encoder to YouTube Live using RTMPS, and keep the encoder running with a restart strategy. You need a channel eligible to livestream, images you have rights to use, and enough sustained outbound bandwidth for your chosen bitrate. A VPS does not bypass YouTube restrictions or guarantee uninterrupted service.
What you need and how the pieces fit together
The slideshow process turns still images into changing or repeated video frames. An encoder packages those frames—and optional audio—and sends the stream to YouTube. The VPS runs those processes remotely; YouTube Live Control Room provides the ingest URL and stream key. A process supervisor or equivalent restart strategy can help relaunch a process after a failure, but it cannot prevent every server, network, or YouTube interruption.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before starting, since platform requirements may change.
- Still images that you own or are licensed to use, including any rights needed for music or other audio.
- A VPS with an operating system and sufficient sustained CPU, memory, storage, and network capacity for your particular slideshow and encoder settings. No universal VPS size or cost is established here; workload and provider matter.
- A slideshow-generation method, an encoder that can send to YouTube, and a way to keep or restart the processes.
Get the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select or create an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the VPS encoder’s connection settings. YouTube explains that stream keys are like the stream’s password and address.
- Keep the key secret. Do not put it in a public script repository, screenshot, or log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
Use YouTube’s current stream URL and key rather than assuming an endpoint or key format. Access to manage a stream can depend on channel permissions; channel owners or managers can reset a compromised key.
Choose compatible encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Its live encoder settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.

- Resolution and frame rate: Pick dimensions and frame rate appropriate for the images, intended viewing experience, and VPS workload. A static image slideshow may not need a high frame rate, but your chosen output must still be supported by the encoder and YouTube.
- Bitrate: Select it from YouTube’s current bitrate table for the exact resolution, frame rate, and codec. There is no single safe bitrate for every slideshow; dimensions, motion, codec, and visual-quality goals affect the choice.
- Audio: If the slideshow has audio, configure a supported AAC or MP3 track and verify that it is actually present in the output. If it is meant to be silent, check that the encoder does not send unintended audio.
- Keyframe interval and rate control: Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where the encoder exposes these controls; keep the interval at four seconds or less.
Plan VPS bandwidth with headroom
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth 20% above the stream’s total bitrate. If you use primary and backup streams, include both in the total when calculating the target. For example, multiply the combined bitrate by 1.2 to estimate the recommended available upload capacity. This is sustained outbound capacity, not merely a VPS provider’s advertised port speed; leave room for other traffic and variability. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Start the slideshow stream and verify it
- Start the slideshow generator so it produces the intended sequence or loop of frames.
- Start the encoder with the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, RTMPS endpoint, and stream key.
- Wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check that the correct images appear in the expected order and that any intended audio is audible.
- Review YouTube’s stream-integrity indicators and confirm the stream is accessible before taking it live.
- Once the preview and output are correct, start the broadcast in Live Control Room if the stream setup requires that action.
- During operation, monitor the encoder process, VPS connectivity, and YouTube player. A VPS keeps your process remote from your home computer, but it is still dependent on the server, network, encoder, and YouTube ingest.
Keep it running and plan for replay separately
For continuous operation, use a process supervisor or another restart strategy to relaunch failed slideshow or encoder processes, and check that a restart reconnects cleanly to YouTube. Also monitor VPS disk use if you create intermediate or recorded files. These are general operational measures, not a guarantee of uptime; no specific supervisor configuration or VPS sizing is established here.

Live continuity and archive retention are different requirements. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a single broadcast lasting longer than 12 hours will produce a complete replay. If replay matters, plan shorter sessions or separately record the source or output, then verify YouTube’s current archive behavior. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Copyright and channel-policy checks for a documentary slideshow
Only use images, music, narration, and other material you have permission to stream. A slideshow being technically live does not make its contents original or licensed. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel policies before broadcast, particularly if the images or soundtrack come from third parties. Eligibility to livestream is also separate from whether particular content is allowed or suitable for monetization; the available setup guidance does not establish that a given slideshow will qualify.

Troubleshoot common VPS slideshow problems

| No preview in Live Control Room | Confirm the encoder is running, the selected stream URL and key are correct, and outbound connectivity to the RTMPS endpoint is available. If the key may have been exposed or changed, reset or recopy it in Live Control Room. |

Alternative: a hosted 24/7 prerecorded-video service
If you do not want to operate a VPS encoder, YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as “A cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of pre-recorded videos on YouTube.” That directory description establishes its category, not its current price, availability, uptime, source-format support, or suitability for a particular slideshow workflow; check those details directly before choosing it.
