You can run a continuous YouTube music stream by sending authorized audio and visuals from an always-on Ubuntu host through FFmpeg to YouTube Live. Create a live stream in YouTube Studio, use its ingest URL and private stream key, choose settings YouTube accepts, and supervise the encoder process. That keeps the workflow running only as reliably as the server, network connection, FFmpeg process and YouTube event—and it does not clear music rights or guarantee a complete archive.
How do I run a 24/7 YouTube music stream with FFmpeg?
The basic chain is media the Ubuntu server can access → FFmpeg → YouTube Live ingest. A 24/7 setup needs an Ubuntu machine that stays on and has a sustained upload connection; an Ubuntu VPS is one option. The FFmpeg process reads your media, encodes it to compatible settings and sends it to the YouTube server URL using the stream key for the selected event.
1. Confirm the channel can go live
Before automating anything, check live access in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
2. Create the event and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or select the event you intend to use. The exact controls can vary with YouTube’s interface and event workflow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder configuration. YouTube documents the encoder setup in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Keep it out of public scripts, source-code repositories, screenshots and logs. Store it in a file readable only by the account running FFmpeg, or in a secret store, and avoid printing the complete ingest URL if it contains the key.
3. Prepare media and choose the streaming plan
Place only media you have permission to stream where the Ubuntu host can read it. Decide whether a single track, a playlist, or separate audio and visual files form the program. A looping input can repeat indefinitely, but it will repeat the same material; a playlist or scheduled changes require a deliberate content and restart plan. Confirm each file plays correctly and that the audio and visuals remain synchronized before the live event.

4. Install and configure FFmpeg for the selected event
Use an FFmpeg build that supports the encoder and protocols you select. Configure it to read the intended authorized inputs, loop them only as required, encode using settings compatible with YouTube’s current ingestion guidance, and send the result to the event’s RTMPS ingest address. Keep the key in protected configuration rather than typing it into a command that may be retained in shell history or visible in process listings.
There is no safe universal copy-and-paste command for every Ubuntu host and media combination: input formats, FFmpeg build options, key handling, reconnect behavior and the chosen YouTube event all affect the exact command. Test the actual command with representative audio and visuals before relying on it unattended. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends testing similar movement and audio and checking stream health.

5. Supervise the process and verify the signal
For unattended operation, a process supervisor such as systemd can start FFmpeg at boot and restart it when it exits. A published Ubuntu VPS example uses looping local files and a systemd service; it is an implementation pattern, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming or an independently verified configuration.
Process restart is not the same as network resilience. A service manager may restart FFmpeg after a crash, but that alone does not prove it can recover from an ingest outage, preserve the same live event or restore playback without intervention. Test failure and reconnection behavior, inspect FFmpeg logs, and monitor YouTube Studio’s stream-health messages while the event is active.

What bitrate and settings should I use?
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, and lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video ingestion, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). For stereo audio, its guidance specifies 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 ingestion references, not a guarantee that a particular India-based home connection or VPS upload route can sustain them.
| H.264 video mode | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Choose a bitrate for the codec, resolution and frame rate actually being sent; do not apply an H.264 number automatically to another codec or mode. A music stream with a static image still needs a valid video signal if you are sending video. Test at the intended settings over the real hosting and network path, then reduce resolution or bitrate if the upload cannot sustain the stream. Use YouTube Studio’s stream health rather than assuming that a successful FFmpeg launch means viewers are receiving a healthy signal.

Can FFmpeg stream a looping playlist to YouTube?
Yes. FFmpeg can read files available to the Ubuntu host and repeat inputs, making it possible to send a recurring program to YouTube Live. How a playlist loops depends on the chosen inputs and FFmpeg configuration; verify transitions, track order, silence, video behavior and recovery at the end of the list before leaving the encoder unattended. Repeated playback also does not grant permission to use the recordings or compositions.
A 24/7 service may be arranged as recurring live events or as a long-running event, depending on the channel’s workflow. Do not assume restarting FFmpeg creates or reconnects to the intended event automatically. Test the complete event lifecycle, including what happens after a host reboot, process failure or connection loss.

Will YouTube archive a 24-hour stream?
YouTube’s encoder help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a single uninterrupted 24-hour session producing one complete archive. Decide whether shorter sessions, separate recordings or no YouTube archive suit the channel, and keep your own authorized source files if you need a separate record. See YouTube’s encoder stream and archive guidance.
Can I play copyrighted music on a YouTube live stream if I have a license?
Only if the rights cover the intended live-stream use and applicable territories, and a license by itself may not prevent an interruption. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; it may warn, replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. YouTube also says licensed third-party content can still be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the creator to obtain necessary rights for use worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants, and to satisfy applicable territorial requirements. For a stream from India, the official guidance cited here is not a complete India-specific legal analysis. Confirm rights for each recording and composition, the permitted territories, live use and monetization, and any allowlisting steps with the rights holders or qualified counsel. Do not assume that a track described as “free,” purchased elsewhere, or cleared for an ordinary video is automatically cleared for a continuous live stream.
YouTube’s Creator Music usage details describe availability for U.S. YouTube Partner Program creators, with expansion beyond the U.S. pending, and exclude Creator Music tracks from live streams. That page is not a basis for treating Creator Music as an India-accessible solution for this use.
Common FFmpeg and YouTube live-stream problems
- YouTube receives no signal: Check that FFmpeg is running, the selected event is active, the ingest URL and key belong to that event, and the host can reach the RTMPS endpoint. Review FFmpeg output and Live Control Room stream health.
- Stream health reports an unstable or inadequate signal: Confirm the host’s sustained upload capacity and compare your actual codec, resolution and frame rate with YouTube’s bitrate guidance. Test at a lower mode if the available connection cannot reliably carry the configured output.
- FFmpeg exits and stays down: Check the service logs for input-file errors, permission problems, encoder availability and malformed configuration. A systemd restart policy can relaunch a failed process, but test it and verify the restarted process reconnects to the correct event.
- The stream stops after a connection interruption: Inspect FFmpeg’s reconnect behavior and YouTube’s event state. A process restart alone does not establish that the encoder can resume the live session; test this failure mode before depending on it.
- The live stream is interrupted or replaced: Check YouTube’s copyright notice and resolve rights or allowlisting issues with the relevant rights holder. Repeatedly restarting the encoder does not resolve a rights match.
- No full-day archive appears: YouTube’s stated automatic archive condition is for streams under 12 hours. Plan a different recording or session approach rather than relying on a single 24-hour archive.
