FFmpeg can encode video in software with a CPU and send it to YouTube; whether a particular server can keep up depends on the input, output settings, and workload. For a prerecorded file, the example below shows a software-encoding starting point. For a live input, adapt the input options and omit real-time file pacing.
What you need before starting
- A server with FFmpeg installed and a software video encoder such as
libx264available in its build. Packages differ, so check the installed build rather than assuming the encoder is included. - A source: for example, a prerecorded video file or another live input. A graphics card is not required simply to relay or software-encode media.
- A YouTube live event and its ingest address and stream name/key.
- A stable outbound connection able to sustain the chosen bitrate, with headroom for network variation.
CPU encoding is the trade-off: it uses processor time, and no single CPU model or threshold guarantees real-time encoding for every resolution and workload. Test the actual server before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Create the YouTube live event and protect its key
-
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its encoder/stream settings. Obtain the ingest URL and stream key (also called the stream name in the Live API). YouTube’s Live API describes ingestion information as an address and stream name: YouTube LiveStreams resource.
-
Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not paste it into a public script, terminal screenshot, shared log, or repository. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting again.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
-
Check the exact URL format for the selected YouTube ingest workflow. Some encoders accept the address and key in separate fields; an FFmpeg output URL may combine them as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Do not assume every endpoint uses an identical path.
Choose a protocol and output settings
Protocol
For an ordinary live broadcast, prefer RTMPS when your FFmpeg build and selected YouTube endpoint support it. RTMPS encrypts RTMP traffic; YouTube’s protocol comparison lists its latency modes and supported ingest options. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison. Plain RTMP is unencrypted. HLS and DASH are alternatives for particular workflows, but are not the simplest starting point for a headless server; HLS has higher latency and is not suitable for ultra-low latency.

Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the exact resolution and frame rate you intend to send. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no interval longer than four seconds; it supports up to 60 fps. Selected H.264 recommendations from YouTube’s encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, are:
| Output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a server can encode or upload at that rate. Choose a bitrate your server’s connection can sustain, and consult YouTube’s full settings table for other formats: YouTube encoder settings.

Color and audio
For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth. Its audio guidance recommends 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 Kbps stereo; for 5.1 audio it lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. RTMP/RTMPS ingest supports AAC or MP3 audio. Match the output to the source and event rather than adding an audio stream that is not present.
Send a prerecorded file with FFmpeg
The following is a schematic example for a 720p, 30 fps prerecorded input. It has not been tested as a universal command: replace the placeholders, verify your FFmpeg build, and use the ingest address and key format assigned to your event.

If the source is a live feed rather than a file, replace INPUT with the appropriate FFmpeg input and configure that input for the feed. Do not blindly use -re: it is intended to pace file playback, not to make a live source more live. Keep the output codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio format, and ingest settings aligned with YouTube’s requirements. The exact capture or input configuration depends on how the feed reaches the server.

Test the stream and monitor its health
-
Start a test event or otherwise test before the intended broadcast. Use representative movement and audio rather than a static frame if the real program will have motion.
-
Watch YouTube Studio’s stream preview and health indicators while FFmpeg runs. A running FFmpeg process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
-
Compare the actual outgoing bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codecs, and audio with the selected settings. YouTube’s Live API can report stream state and configuration issues including low bitrate, mismatched frame rate, missing audio, and unsupported codecs: LiveStreams resource.
-
Test under the real server workload and network conditions. Do not promise a resolution or frame rate until the machine has demonstrated it can encode and send that output reliably.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| No connection or timeout | Confirm that the URL uses rtmps for an RTMPS endpoint, points to the correct YouTube ingest host and application path, and uses port 443. Check that TLS/SNI uses the expected hostname. A plain RTMP connection to an endpoint expecting RTMPS can fail with TLS or timeout errors. |
| YouTube reports an unsupported codec | Check the actual output codecs against YouTube’s ingest support. For the example, verify that the video is H.264 and audio is AAC, and that the installed FFmpeg build supports the selected encoders. |
| Low stream health or buffering | Compare outgoing bitrate with the recommendation for the chosen resolution and frame rate, then check upload capacity and network headroom. Reduce the output bitrate or format if the connection cannot sustain it. |
| No audio | Confirm the input contains an audio stream and that FFmpeg maps or encodes it as intended. Use a supported AAC or MP3 audio codec; YouTube diagnostics can report missing audio. |
| CPU usage is high or frames fall behind | Reduce resolution, frame rate, or encoding complexity, then retest. There is no universal CPU minimum established for every input and workload. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded program live on YouTube without maintaining a server, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream uses the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
