Usually, uploading a video to your VPS will not stop your YouTube stream—but it also will not necessarily make the running stream play that video. The file upload and the encoder’s active playback queue are separate. Whether you can add the video without interruption depends on whether your playlist software supports live queue updates, and whether it can apply one without reloading the source or reconnecting the encoder.
Why uploading a file is different from updating a live stream
Your VPS stores and plays the video; an encoder on the VPS sends the resulting live feed to YouTube. YouTube receives that outgoing feed, not the files in the VPS directory. So a completed upload does not, by itself, change what the encoder is playing.
The key question is whether the application controlling playback can add the new file to its active queue while keeping the encoder’s connection to YouTube running. That depends on the specific VPS panel, playlist tool, encoder, version and configuration. YouTube’s ingest documentation describes how an encoder delivers a stream, but does not establish whether a third-party VPS playlist can be edited live.
Will common playlist methods pick up a new video live?
FFmpeg concat list
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text list and processes its files in sequence. The documentation does not promise that an already-running process will reread changes to that list. Treat the list as fixed for the current run unless the exact workflow documents and has been tested for live reload. Editing the text file while FFmpeg is running may leave the active process unchanged.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Concat also expects compatible streams, codecs and time bases. A newly added video with different media properties can cause concat errors or playback problems; check compatibility or normalize the file before relying on it in the sequence. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
OBS media or VLC video source
OBS supports media sources and VLC video sources; the VLC source can play multiple media items and requires VLC to be installed. Playlist support alone does not guarantee that changing playlist contents during a broadcast will be seamless. The OBS documentation does not promise that a live edit avoids a source reload or interruption. See OBS media sources.

YouTube ingest
YouTube’s RTMPS workflow describes an encoder connecting to a valid ingest endpoint over RTMP through a TLS connection. Its HLS workflow instead has the encoder send media playlists and media segments to YouTube. These are ingest mechanisms, not instructions for updating a local list of complete videos on your VPS. For HLS details, Google notes that each media segment represents a brief portion of the stream lasting between one and four seconds; that segment description should not be confused with a playlist of full-length videos. See YouTube HLS ingestion and YouTube RTMPS ingestion.
How to add a video while protecting the current broadcast
- Identify what owns the active queue. Check the VPS application, encoder and playlist format currently feeding the YouTube stream. The precise procedure depends on those products and their versions.
- Upload the file without changing the running source. Confirm the upload completed, the file is in the expected media directory, and the operating-system user running the encoder can read it.
- Check media compatibility. Compare the new file’s streams, codecs and time bases with the existing concat inputs. If they are incompatible, normalize the file or use a playback method that supports the difference before adding it.
- Use a documented live queue control if available. Prefer an application’s queue or playlist controls that explicitly support updates during playback. Do not assume manually editing an input file will be noticed by a running process.
- If live updates are not documented, test a planned change or handoff. Try the procedure on a non-production stream or at a time when an interruption is acceptable. Restarting or replacing an encoder process can interrupt delivery to YouTube; a successful file upload does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
- Protect the ingest credentials. Use the ingest URL and protocol configured in YouTube Live Control Room, and keep the stream key private. Do not change the active encoder’s connection details as part of a playlist edit unless your tested procedure requires it.
What to verify before choosing a playlist workflow
- Can you add or remove an item while playback is active?
- Does the change reload the source, restart the encoder or reconnect to YouTube?
- Which file formats and media properties does the workflow accept, and does it normalize mismatches?
- Does the queue persist after an encoder restart, or must it be rebuilt?
- Can you test the update procedure without risking the live broadcast?
Neither FFmpeg’s documented concat-list behavior nor OBS’s documented playlist support, on its own, establishes seamless live edits. If your VPS provider or panel does not document the behavior for your specific setup, ask its support team or test it safely before depending on it.
