For a 24/7 stream, run FFmpeg under a service manager and monitor both the VPS and YouTube’s stream health; a restart policy alone cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
What you need before installing FFmpeg
- An Ubuntu or Debian VPS with permission to install packages and run a long-lived service.
- A video file you have the rights to stream, plus enough disk space if you plan to keep it on the VPS.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming and the current RTMPS ingest URL and stream key for the stream you intend to use.
- Enough sustained VPS outbound bandwidth for the chosen video bitrate, with additional headroom for network variation.
For first-time live streaming, YouTube says enablement may take up to 24 hours. Complete that step before scheduling a launch. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guide.
Install FFmpeg from the Ubuntu or Debian repository
For a standard server setup, use the distribution package rather than compiling FFmpeg yourself. FFmpeg’s download page points users to official Ubuntu and Debian package sources. Package versions and enabled codecs depend on the operating system release and its configured repositories.
- Update package metadata:
sudo apt update - Install FFmpeg:
sudo apt install ffmpeg - Verify the installed binary and build:
ffmpeg -version - Check for the encoders used in the example below:
ffmpeg -encoders | grep -E 'libx264|aac'
If libx264 or aac is absent, do not assume the example command will work unchanged. Check the encoders available in your build and choose a compatible supported codec, or use a build that includes the required encoder. A source build is an option when you need a particular version or feature set, but it requires configuring, compiling, and installing FFmpeg; optional external codec libraries are not enabled by default. Choose the YouTube stream settings before starting
Use settings that match both the source and the stream you configure in YouTube. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and H.264 video with AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Its current guidance includes these recommended H.264 ingest bitrates; they are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS route can sustain them.

These values are listed in YouTube’s encoder settings. The minimum is not the recommended target. Select a resolution and frame rate the source can support, then check that the VPS can sustain the corresponding outgoing bitrate. YouTube also recommends testing representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health.
Keyframes and frame rate
Set the GOP length to about two seconds in frames: for 30 fps, use 60 frames; for 60 fps, use 120. The example below uses -g 60 and therefore assumes a 30 fps source and output. If your source frame rate differs, adjust the GOP and the rest of the video settings accordingly.

RTMPS URL and stream key
In Live Control Room, retrieve the URL and key for the actual stream and choose RTMPS rather than relying on an older RTMP address copied from a tutorial. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance explains how to find the connection details. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not paste it into a command that may remain in shell history or appear in process listings or logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube.
Send a video file to YouTube with FFmpeg
This command illustrates real-time playback of a local file to an RTMPS destination. It assumes an FFmpeg build with libx264 and AAC support, a 30 fps source, and an environment variable named YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL containing the full URL supplied by YouTube, including its stream key. It is an example, not a tested universal recipe; adapt it to the source and selected YouTube settings.

The bitrate and maximum rate are set to 14 Mbps here to match YouTube’s recommended 1080p30 H.264 value; use a different value for another output mode.-bufsize 28000ksets a two-second rate-control buffer at that video bitrate.-g 60requests a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds at 30 fps.-pix_fmt yuv420pselects a commonly supported pixel format.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes AAC audio at the specified bitrate and sample rate. Confirm the audio is present and audible in a test stream.-f flvselects the container used for this RTMP-family output, and the final argument is the supplied RTMPS destination.
FFmpeg documents RTMPS as an encrypted RTMP protocol and supports real-time file streaming. Store the connection secret in a restricted environment file or another protected mechanism rather than embedding a real key in a reusable command. Restrict file permissions and the service account’s access to it.

Keep the process recoverable and observable
For a continuous stream, run FFmpeg through a service manager such as systemd instead of relying on an interactive SSH session. Create a least-privilege account for the service, grant it access only to the input files and protected key configuration it needs, enable restart after process failure, and direct logs to a location with rotation. Exact unit-file settings depend on your Linux release and deployment; verify the service starts after reboot and that its logs are readable before relying on it.
A service manager can restart FFmpeg after the process exits. It cannot correct an invalid input, an overloaded CPU, inadequate outbound bandwidth, provider maintenance, an expired or changed stream key, or an interruption at YouTube’s ingest. Monitor process state, VPS CPU and network activity, logs, and the stream preview and health indicators in Live Control Room. Run a full-duration test appropriate to your use before treating the setup as operational. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its setup guide does not promise automatic archival for longer streams.

An “India” region label alone does not establish that a VPS can sustain a particular YouTube stream. The documentation cited here does not rank Indian providers or cities, and no provider-specific performance claim is supported. Before committing to a plan, check:

- Sustained outbound performance: test from the actual instance toward the selected YouTube ingest endpoint and look for stable throughput and packet behavior, not just a short peak-speed result.
- Transfer limits and rules: confirm included outbound transfer, overage terms, fair-use limits, and whether continuous video traffic is allowed.
- CPU headroom: software encoding consumes CPU; verify the VPS can handle the selected resolution and frame rate without falling behind. This matters less if you are not transcoding, but FFmpeg still needs resources to read and send the stream.
- Storage and logs: account for the source media and retained logs, and configure log rotation so a long-running service does not fill the disk.
- Maintenance and recovery: understand provider maintenance and reboot behavior, and test that the service comes back after a VPS restart.
For a continuing file loop, confirm how your chosen FFmpeg input or playlist handles the end of each item and what happens when a file is missing or unreadable. Test the full sequence, not just the first few minutes. A successful connection at launch does not establish long-term stability.

FFmpeg is not found after installation
Confirm that sudo apt install ffmpeg completed without package errors, then run command -v ffmpeg and ffmpeg -version. If the binary is missing, check the VPS distribution and configured package repositories rather than assuming Ubuntu and Debian package availability is identical across releases.
The command reports an unknown encoder
Run ffmpeg -encoders | grep -E 'libx264|aac'. If an encoder is missing, the installed build does not provide it. Use an available compatible encoder or install a build with the needed feature; do not copy a source-build configuration without checking its dependencies.

YouTube does not receive the stream
Verify that the URL and key came from the correct current stream in Live Control Room, that the key is intact, and that the VPS can reach the ingest service. Use RTMPS. If YouTube reports a relevant SSL connection error, its RTMPS help advises trying port 443. Check the FFmpeg error output and YouTube’s Live Control Room status to distinguish a connection failure from an encoding or stream-health issue.
The stream buffers, drops frames, or reports poor health
Compare the encoder’s actual output bitrate with the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity and the selected YouTube recommendation. Check CPU load for software-encoding bottlenecks, inspect packet and network stability, and try a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the instance cannot sustain the chosen mode. Re-test with representative motion and audio rather than a static opening frame.
The stream stops when you disconnect from SSH
An FFmpeg process launched in an interactive shell may end with that session. Run it under a service manager, enable restart on process failure, and confirm it starts at boot. Then test a deliberate process restart and VPS reboot while watching the server logs and Live Control Room. A restart policy recovers from some process exits; it does not ensure YouTube continues receiving a valid stream.
FFmpeg restarts repeatedly or the disk fills
Inspect service logs for input-path errors, permissions, codec failures, and connection errors. Confirm that the service account can read the media and protected key configuration. Rotate logs and monitor disk usage; repeated restarts can conceal a persistent fault rather than resolve it.

Copyright and channel eligibility still apply
FFmpeg only transports and encodes media; it does not grant permission to broadcast it or determine whether YouTube will monetize a channel. Use footage, music, and other material you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies. Repeatedly looping prerecorded material is not, by itself, evidence that a channel satisfies YouTube’s monetization rules. Check your rights and the current rules before leaving a stream running.
