Can a Free Cloud VM Run a 24/7 YouTube Livestream?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—a cloud VM can run an encoder that sends a continuous YouTube livestream. But a free VM is not automatically a dependable, zero-cost way to stay live 24/7: compute quotas, outbound data charges, regional capacity, restarts, and YouTube’s account rules all matter. No particular free VM configuration is established as tested or reliable here.

What “free” does—and does not—cover

Free tiers generally limit eligible machines, regions, storage, or usage. A continuous stream also sends data for as long as it runs, so a free compute allowance does not by itself make the full service free. Check the provider’s current rules for your account, region, and traffic destination before relying on a zero-cost estimate.

Google Cloud: limited Free Tier allowance

Google Cloud’s documented Free Tier includes one non-preemptible e2-micro VM in one of three eligible US regions, 30 GB-months of standard persistent disk, and 1 GB per month of outbound data transfer for specified destinations. The VM allowance is time-based across eligible e2-micro usage, not an unlimited allotment of instances. See Google Cloud’s Free Tier and trial documentation.

Google’s separate free trial provides $300 in credit for 90 days. It is temporary: if the account is not upgraded when the trial ends or the credit runs out, its resources stop. It should not be treated as an always-free hosting plan. The documentation does not establish how much a stream to a YouTube ingestion endpoint would cost under destination-specific billing rules.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Oracle Cloud: a different Always Free allocation

Oracle documents up to two AMD E2.1.Micro VMs and a monthly Ampere A1 allowance equivalent to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory, in the tenancy’s home region. Oracle also warns that free-shape host capacity can be temporarily unavailable. These allocations make Oracle a possible host to investigate, not a guarantee of capacity, free egress, or uninterrupted streaming. Check Oracle’s Always Free resource documentation.

Bandwidth is the main obstacle to a truly free 24/7 stream

YouTube recommends an H.264 bitrate of 6 Mbps for 720p30 and 720p60, and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. At a constant 6 Mbps, a 30-day stream sends about 1,944 decimal GB of video data before protocol overhead. That figure is calculated from the bitrate and 30-day duration; it is not a provider’s traffic estimate. Compare the volume with the VM provider’s outbound-transfer allowance and destination-specific billing rules before assuming the stream will cost nothing. YouTube’s current guidance is in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

What you need to run an encoder from a VM

  • A VM with enough compute capacity for the encoder and your selected stream settings. The available sources do not benchmark CPU or memory needs for the free VM shapes named above.
  • A video source and encoder configured to send a continuous feed. For a simple prerecorded loop, a headless encoder may avoid the overhead of a full desktop environment, but its performance on a particular free VM is not established.
  • Your YouTube server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains where to enter them: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  • A plan for process restarts, reconnects, and alerts if the encoder or VM stops.

Configure the stream and YouTube account

  1. Confirm the channel can livestream. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  2. Create the livestream in YouTube Studio and copy its connection details. Use the server URL and stream key provided for the event. Treat the key like a password; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
  3. Choose a supported encoder protocol. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it.
  4. Set bitrate and keyframes for the chosen output. YouTube recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval. Its H.264 recommendations include 6 Mbps for 720p30 or 720p60 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. Follow the current codec- and resolution-specific guidance rather than assuming one bitrate fits all outputs.
  5. Start the encoder and verify the incoming feed. Confirm that YouTube receives the intended picture and audio before leaving the process unattended.
  6. Arrange recovery and monitoring. Configure the encoder process to restart if it exits and alert yourself if the VM or stream becomes unavailable. During any trial, watch CPU use, dropped frames, reconnects, and actual outbound billing. These are precautions, not evidence that a particular free VM will sustain a stream.

Keep copyright and YouTube policy in view

A VM does not change the rules that apply to the stream’s content. Use material you own or are authorized to broadcast, and make sure the planned stream complies with YouTube’s policies. A technically stable loop can still be interrupted or restricted for account or content reasons; livestream eligibility also depends on the channel’s status.

Operational trade-offs and other approaches

Running your own encoder on a free VM

This approach gives you control over the VM and encoder, but you are responsible for configuration, restarts, monitoring, capacity, and checking whether ongoing traffic remains within an affordable allowance. Neither Google Cloud’s nor Oracle’s cited free allocation establishes a reliable uptime figure or a total monthly streaming cost.

Google Cloud Live Stream API is a separate product

Do not confuse a self-managed encoder on Compute Engine with Google Cloud’s Live Stream API. Google’s pricing page says the API has no free usage tier: Live Stream API pricing.

Managed playback for prerecorded video

YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video. The directory does not establish its current pricing or service limits, so check those directly before choosing it. For a YouTube-only service built to loop uploaded recordings from the cloud, StreamNeo is another option: StreamNeo.
