In OBS, add the video and music as separate Media Source sources, then enable Loop in each source’s properties. Each file will repeat independently. For multiple tracks, use a VLC Video source with a playlist and keep Loop Playlist enabled.
Set up a looping video and music track
- Add the video: In the OBS Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Name it, select Create New, and choose OK. In the source properties, enable Local File, browse to the video, and check Loop. Select OK.
- Add the music separately: Select + in Sources again and add another Media Source. Choose the audio file and enable Loop in its properties. Keeping the sources separate lets each file repeat on its own.
- Check the scene: Confirm the video is visible in the preview and that the music source is active in the Audio Mixer. Adjust the source order if another visual source covers the video. Make a private or unlisted test stream to check that both picture and sound reach YouTube before going public.
OBS documents local video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. The file extensions alone do not guarantee that every codec or file will play correctly in every installed release, so test your media. Loop a playlist instead of one file
For multiple clips or tracks, add a VLC Video source and build its playlist rather than adding every file as an independent source. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default, so the list repeats in order unless you change the shuffle setting.
- VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to be available.
- If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies that you need 64-bit VLC.
- Playback across file boundaries can vary with your media and software setup. Test the playlist; do not assume transitions will be gapless or that multiple sources will stay synchronized without checking.
For a single file, the Media Source’s Loop option specifies whether the file plays again after playback completes; its documented default is off. Restart playback when source becomes active is documented as on by default. Labels or behavior may differ by installed OBS release, so check the properties in your version.

Check music rights before going live
Looping a track in OBS does not give you permission to broadcast it. Confirm that your rights or license cover live streaming and, if you archive the broadcast, the archived video too. Check any limits on monetization or territories, attribution requirements, and whether the rights holder must allowlist your channel in Content ID. A “royalty-free” label, credit in the description, or music subscription does not by itself establish that these uses are covered; the terms of the particular license control.
YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If content is identified, YouTube may show a warning and replace the stream with a placeholder; if the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. YouTube also advises licensed creators to ask the rights owner to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist. A live-stream archive may receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast. Troubleshoot common problems
- The video or music stops after one play: Open that source’s properties and turn on Loop. Check each Media Source separately; enabling it for the video does not enable it for the music.
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC according to OBS.
- A file will not play: Confirm the file uses a supported format, then test the actual file in your installed OBS version. The documented extension list is not a guarantee for every file’s encoding.
- Music is not audible in the test: Check that the source is present and unmuted in the Audio Mixer, then verify the test stream’s audio. Do not rely on the scene preview alone to confirm what viewers receive.
- YouTube interrupts the stream: Review YouTube’s notice and resolve the rights issue. If you have a license, ask the rights holder whether your channel needs Content ID allowlisting; possession of a license does not ensure uninterrupted playback when the channel is not allowlisted.
