What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A 24/7 YouTube lo-fi stream that keeps reconnecting can be caused by an unstable or undersized upload connection, encoder or computer trouble, or a mismatch in stream settings. “Reconnecting” by itself does not identify the fault. Start with the exact warning in YouTube Live Control Room, then compare it with encoder logs, computer load, and the stability of the connection used to stream.
What can cause repeated reconnects?
Check three areas rather than assuming the internet is at fault: the outbound connection, the encoder and computer, and the stream-key/server/protocol configuration. YouTube says the stream’s total bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. It also warns that a connectivity disruption could break a stream. That 20% is recommended spare capacity, not a measured failure rate. YouTube’s streaming tips explain the bandwidth guidance.
- Connection: Upload capacity may be too low for the configured video and audio bitrate, or the path may have intermittent interruptions even when a speed test looks adequate.
- Encoder or computer: Encoder errors, high CPU load, outdated software, or a local problem can interrupt the feed. A healthy-looking local preview does not by itself prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Configuration: A wrong stream key or server URL, or an RTMPS compatibility or connection issue, can prevent a reliable connection.
YouTube’s guidance does not establish which explanation applies to your stream. The warning text, logs, settings, and network measurements are needed to narrow it down.
Diagnose the next disconnect in order
- Read the stream-health warning. In YouTube Live Control Room, note the exact stream-health message and the time it appears. Record the times of disconnects too. These timestamps make it easier to compare YouTube’s status with encoder logs; do not infer a cause from “reconnecting” alone. See YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance.
- Check the encoder and computer. Update the encoder software, inspect its logs and error messages, and observe CPU load during the stream. Compare the encoder preview with YouTube’s incoming stream. If you are recording a local archive, check whether it continues to grow through a disconnect. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and streaming tips describe checks for encoder errors and stream preparation.
- Measure the actual upload path. Run an outbound upload test on the computer and network used for the stream. Compare sustained upload capacity—not just a brief peak—with the combined configured audio and video bitrate, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% room. A speed test is a snapshot and cannot rule out intermittent drops.
- Reduce load if the connection has too little headroom. Lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a combination the connection can sustain consistently. Use YouTube’s encoder table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than choosing a setting from resolution alone.
- Verify the stream destination and credentials. Confirm that the stream key and server URL in the encoder match the values in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If using RTMPS, check that the encoder supports it and that you entered the correct RTMPS URL. YouTube’s stream settings guidance covers stream keys and encoder setup; its RTMPS troubleshooting includes SSL and timeout checks and describes port 443 as an option to try.
- Test the connection path. If encoder logs and preview appear healthy but the upload path drops, test on a reliable connection and ask your ISP to investigate recurring connection problems. If you currently use Wi-Fi, a wired Ethernet test can help isolate the wireless link; it will not fix an ISP-side or encoder fault.
- Run a rehearsal before another long session. Test with the same audio and video load, monitor stream health, and test failover if you have configured a backup encoder. YouTube recommends preparation and testing, but no configuration guarantees that a 24/7 stream will never reconnect. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Set bitrate and keyframes for a stable feed
YouTube’s H.264 encoder table provides recommended bitrate examples that depend on resolution and frame rate. These are encoder targets—not evidence that a particular internet connection can sustain them. The same table separately lists minimum values; the examples below are the recommended values. Check YouTube’s encoder settings table for the full, current guidance and the applicable codec.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| H.264 video format | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Its advice is to choose a quality that will produce a reliable stream on your internet connection. For a lo-fi stream, a lower sustainable setting is preferable to a higher target that repeatedly overwhelms the upload path.
Use viewer reports to separate local and stream-wide problems
If only one viewer reports playback trouble, their device or connection may be responsible. If many viewers on different connections report the same problem, the encoder becomes a more plausible place to investigate. But if you—the uploader—see reconnects, viewer reports cannot replace checks of your own encoder and outbound connection. Compare reports with the timestamps and stream-health messages in Live Control Room.

Copyright and continuous-play checks for lo-fi streams
A reconnect diagnosis is separate from whether the audio and visuals are permitted to stream. Before running a long loop, make sure you have the rights to the music, artwork, and any other material in the stream. A technically stable connection does not establish that a stream complies with copyright requirements, and this diagnostic guidance does not determine whether particular material is authorized.
For a long session, verify that the intended playlist or recording is the one being sent, monitor the encoder and YouTube stream health, and rehearse any backup setup. Continuous operation can still be interrupted; failover testing helps reveal whether a configured backup actually takes over.
