What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start by checking the current server URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room. If FFmpeg reports an SSL error or times out, verify the RTMPS endpoint and FFmpeg’s RTMPS support before changing encoding settings. If FFmpeg connects but YouTube shows no preview or reports a stream-health problem, troubleshoot the media output separately: a successful RTMP connection does not guarantee YouTube can read the video and audio.
Identify which stage is failing
Keep the complete FFmpeg log, the command with credentials removed, and the output of ffmpeg -version. The error wording and point of failure help distinguish a destination or key problem from a TLS connection failure, a stalled write, or media YouTube cannot ingest. Do not post a live stream key in a public log, issue, or support request.
- FFmpeg fails while opening the output: check the destination URL, stream key, protocol, and connection error first.
- “Connection timed out” or “failed to connect to server”: verify the exact endpoint and whether FFmpeg supports RTMPS.
- An SSL error: check that the URL uses the RTMPS protocol and the server supplied for the stream.
- FFmpeg connects, then stops while writing: preserve the full error at the point of failure. The message alone does not identify whether the source, local network, route, or remote ingest caused the interruption.
- YouTube receives a connection but shows no ingest preview: investigate the output format, selected streams, codecs, and settings rather than assuming the RTMP handshake failed.
FFmpeg documents RTMP as multimedia streaming over TCP/IP. Its native RTMP URL syntax can include a server, optional port, app, and instance or playpath; the documented default port is 1935. YouTube’s actual stream endpoint takes precedence over assumptions about how to construct that URL. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.
Check the YouTube URL and stream key
- Open the stream’s settings in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and current stream key from there rather than relying on a value saved from an earlier broadcast. YouTube explains that a stream key lets the encoder send a feed for YouTube to accept; treat it like a password. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
- Compare the configured destination character for character. Confirm that FFmpeg is using the correct server URL as well as the intended key. Check the actual command or configuration loaded by the running process—not only a value you recently edited.
- Replace a stale or exposed key. If the key may have been compromised or is known to be outdated, reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg with the replacement. YouTube’s guidance for an encoder that will not start also directs users to copy the key from Live Control Room and paste it into their encoder: YouTube encoder troubleshooting.
Fix RTMPS SSL errors and connection timeouts
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the TLS/SSL-protected extension of RTMP. The ordinary RTMP address may appear by default in Live Control Room, so obtain the RTMPS URL there and use the endpoint provided for the stream. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance covers SSL errors and timeouts.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- For an SSL error: confirm that the URL uses RTMPS and that its server matches the RTMPS endpoint in Live Control Room. If the URL appears correct and the SSL error persists, YouTube says to try specifying port 443. Do not substitute a documentation example hostname for the actual endpoint assigned to your stream.
- For a timeout: check the server URL and verify that the FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. Investigate an incorrect endpoint or unsupported protocol before changing bitrate or video codec settings.
The error wording alone does not establish that a firewall, router, or cable is at fault, and there is no universal network rule established for every setup. If the endpoint and protocol are correct, use the exact FFmpeg error and controlled network diagnostics to investigate reachability.
If FFmpeg connects, check the media YouTube receives
Transport and media ingestion are separate checks: an established connection does not show that YouTube can use the outgoing video and audio. Compare the stream with YouTube’s current live encoder settings and check the stream preview and health indicators in Live Control Room.

|---|---|
| Streaming protocol | RTMP or RTMPS |
| Video codecs | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps |
| Keyframe interval | Recommended: 2 seconds; maximum: 4 seconds |
| Audio codecs | AAC or MP3 |
| Bitrate mode | CBR |
| H.264 bitrate example: 1080p at 30 fps | Recommended: 5 Mbps; use YouTube’s separate minimum column for the minimum |
| H.264 bitrate example: 1080p at 60 fps | Recommended: 17 Mbps; use YouTube’s separate minimum column for the minimum |
The bitrate examples are YouTube recommendations for the specified H.264 resolution and frame rate—not universal minimum internet-speed requirements. For another resolution, frame rate, or codec, consult the corresponding row and minimum in YouTube’s current table; platform guidance can change.
Check the muxer and selected streams
FFmpeg’s RTMP publishing example uses the FLV muxer (-f flv). If YouTube receives a connection but does not detect the stream, check the output container and whether the intended video and audio streams are actually mapped into the output. In a 2022 FFmpeg-user discussion, a contributor suggested trying FLV after YouTube did not detect reported raw H.264 output. That is a case-specific suggestion, not proof that FLV fixes every ingest issue or a connection failure: FFmpeg-user discussion.

Interpret encoder-selection errors separately
If the log identifies automatic encoder selection or a tee output problem, diagnose that output configuration on its own. A 2019 FFmpeg-user mailing-list example notes that the tee muxer did not supply useful codec defaults for the command in question and that audio codec selection was also needed. Apply that advice only when the error points to a comparable codec-setup issue: FFmpeg-user mailing-list example.
Investigate disconnects during a stream
When FFmpeg starts successfully but later stops, capture the full log around the failed write and note whether YouTube’s preview or stream-health status changed. A timeout during output indicates a stalled or failed write, but does not by itself establish where the underlying cause lies.

FFmpeg’s all-options documentation includes an example pattern for continuing real-time processing after a temporary failure and retrying a stream every second. Retry behavior may help an application recover from a brief interruption, but confirm that the options and syntax are available in your installed FFmpeg version. Retries do not diagnose or repair the underlying link.

- Capture the complete FFmpeg log, version/build information, and command; redact the stream key.
- Compare FFmpeg’s active server URL and key with the current values in Live Control Room.
- For SSL errors, verify the RTMPS protocol and assigned server; if the URL appears correct and SSL still fails, try port 443 as YouTube directs.
- For timeouts, confirm the endpoint and RTMPS support before altering encoding options.
- If transport succeeds, inspect muxer, video and audio selection, codecs, frame rate, keyframe interval, CBR mode, and the bitrate row for the actual format.
- If the stream later stops, preserve the failed-write details and use retries only as a recovery measure—not as proof of the root cause.
